It\u2019s a concept that many people likely hadn\u2019t heard of until the COVID-19 pandemic began in early 2020, but now most of us are practicing it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CCD) recommends quarantining if you have been in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/php\/contact-tracing\/contact-tracing-plan\/appendix.html#contact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">close contact<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with someone who has known COVID-19. Close contact is considered being within 6 feet of someone for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more within a 24-hour period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have been<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/fully-vaccinated.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fully vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you do <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need to quarantine after contact with someone who had COVID-19\u2014unless you have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/symptoms-testing\/symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, you should get tested three to five days after exposure, even if you don\u2019t have symptoms. You should also wear a mask indoors in public for 14 days following exposure or you receive a negative test result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people who social distance regularly still go outside to enjoy a walk or trail, but can you do the same if you\u2019re in self-isolation or self-quarantining?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The difference between social distance and self-isolation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social distancing means avoiding crowded spaces and events. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/coronavirus\/coronavirus-social-distancing-and-self-quarantine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Hopkins Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, social distancing includes canceling events, closing down many non-essential services like schools and libraries, and having people work from home if possible. People who are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/social-distance-coronavirus-isolation-precautions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social distancing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are advised to avoid gathering in large groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSelf-isolation is separating yourself from the population if you are believed to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-and-incubation-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms consistent with COVID-19<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or have tested positive for it,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/drsomamandal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an internist at Summit Medical Group in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. In other words, an infected person (or someone who thinks they may have been exposed to COVID-19) should self-isolate to prevent coronavirus transmission.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-isolation is used to separate people infected with COVID-19 from those who are not. People who are in isolation should stay home until it\u2019s safe for them to be around others. At home, anyone sick or infected should separate from others, stay in a specific \u201csick room\u201d or area, and use a separate bathroom if possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-what-to-do-if-you-are-sick\/\"><b>What to do if you think you have coronavirus<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you go outside if you have COVID?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us can\u2019t imagine being cooped up inside all day; the thought of getting outside to stretch our legs is tempting. But what are the rules around self-isolating and getting outdoors?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSomeone in self-isolation can go outside for fresh air, but should ideally remain in the confines of their own home, such as their backyard,\u201d Dr. Mandal says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Susan Besser, MD, a primary care physician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland adds: \u201cSelf-isolation is limiting exposure to others at all times. This is done by staying home and away from other people. The point is to limit the spread of COVID-19. If you aren\u2019t around others, you can\u2019t spread or catch the virus.\u201d Limiting exposure includes limiting contact with those who live in your home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-summer-safety-tips\/\"><b>Summer safety tips during the coronavirus pandemic<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which outdoor areas are safe during self-isolation?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in self-isolation, you should really not be outside except for your own property, explains Dr. Mandal. If you need to go to the doctor, you should call first, and wear a mask. Your physician\u2019s office may have a policy that the physician will meet you at your car. This is meant to decrease transmission to others in the waiting room and the medical facility. Similarly, if you have to go to the emergency room, you should call first to alert them of your possible COVID-19 infection in order to protect healthcare workers and other patients there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Dr. Besser says a short walk where you keep your distance from others\u2014and wear a mask in case anyone gets too close\u2014is acceptable. Masks help both the person wearing it and the person breathing in nearby air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some ideas for fresh air if you\u2019re feeling cooped up in isolation include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go on a walk either early in the morning, or late at night, when there are fewer people outside<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sit on your front porch or spend some time in your backyard<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open up all of your windows for some fresh air<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Places to avoid while in self-isolation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playgrounds\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Public places where others gather<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anywhere that is crowded or has high traffic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Mandal says that if you decide to go for a walk with someone, you should keep your distance to at least six feet. COVID-19 is a respiratory virus, so the goal is to not put respiratory droplets with viral particles in the air that others can inhale.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you test positive for COVID-19 and have no symptoms, you can be with others after 10 days have passed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/covid-vacation\/\"><b>Is it safe to travel now?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What should I do if I encounter someone and I\u2019m on a walk?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, you wouldn\u2019t be near anyone when you\u2019re out on a walk, but if you do see someone approaching, it\u2019s best to keep your distance or change directions (for example, you can cross the road if someone is walking toward you). Wear a mask.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Besser says you can gently remind someone of social distancing if anyone starts to come close to you. Keep your mask on when you cough or sneeze to avoid the aerosolization of viral particles.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you are walking in your neighborhood and you see someone approaching you, stop and hold out your arms requesting that they keep an appropriate distance,\u201d Dr. Mandal advises. \u201cUnfortunately, not everyone is adhering to recommendations, but it is our responsibility to gently remind everyone to keep their boundaries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you get COVID outside?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">COVID transmission outdoors is possible but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2021\/04\/13\/covid-outside-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than indoor exposure. The coronavirus spreads the same way indoors as it does outdoors. The chances of getting COVID outside are lowered by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/face-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wearing masks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, social distancing, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-wash-your-hands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">washing hands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\/media-resources\/science-in-5\/episode-40---transmission-indoors-and-outdoors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
