During the 10-week period, customers are offered the opportunity to enroll in new healthcare coverage, switch their current health plan to a new one, and\/or apply for cost assistance. Plans that were enrolled by Dec. 15 take effect on Jan. 1 of the next year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you miss the deadline, certain qualifications allow you to get health insurance after the open enrollment period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-i-get-health-insurance-outside-of-the-enrollment-window\"><b>Can I get health insurance outside of the enrollment window?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to obtain health insurance or change your Marketplace plan after the open enrollment period only if you experience at least one \u201clife event\u201d that qualifies for a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Special Enrollment Period<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that you may not qualify for cost assistance if you\u2019re enrolling in health coverage after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/healthcare-defined-open-enrollment-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">annual open enrollment period<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Individuals who do not qualify for coverage in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2026 through a Special Enrollment Period can enroll in health insurance during regular <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/aca-open-enrollment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ACA open enrollment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2026 running Nov. 1, 2025 through January 15, 2026.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a Medicare consumer, Medicare has several different enrollment periods, including its own Special Enrollment Period. However, unless you have low income (qualifying for a program like Medicaid, the Medicare Savings Program, or Part D Extra Help), a late enrollment into Medicare may result in a higher premium, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/basics\/costs\/medicare-costs\/avoid-penalties\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medicare.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Marketplace Special Enrollment Period\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A qualifying life event for a Special Enrollment Period is defined as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A change in household (marriage\/divorce, having or adopting a baby, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A change in residence to a new zip code or county<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A loss in coverage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Becoming a U.S. citizen<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gaining membership in a federally recognized tribe or status as an Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) Corporation shareholder\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting or ending service as an AmeriCorps State and National, VISTA, or NCCC member<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaving incarceration<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to find out if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period for Marketplace plans, visit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/screener\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to answer a few questions. If you do qualify, begin by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/create-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">filling out an application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the government\u2019s website, along with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/see-plans\/#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visiting this section of the site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to review the current plans and pricing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-medicare-special-enrollment-periods\"><b>2. Medicare Special Enrollment Periods<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicareresources.org\/faqs\/when-is-the-next-medicare-open-enrollment-period\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">separate enrollment periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for people with Medicare.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Initial enrollment period:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Sign up for Medicare Part A and\/or Part B within seven months of the time you first become eligible for Medicare through age or disability.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fall open enrollment period: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reevaluate and make changes to your Medicare or Medicare Advantage coverage, or your Part D coverage, from Oct. 15 to Dec. 7.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>General enrollment period:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The time period between Jan. 1 and Mar. 31 of every year is when you can enroll in Medicare Part B for the first time if you missed your initial enrollment period. You may be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) or a prescription drug (Part D) plan. If you enroll in Medicare during the GEP, your coverage starts the first day of the month following your enrollment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Marketplace plans, Medicare also has Special Enrollment Periods. If you qualify for one or both of these programs, enrollment can begin immediately. The first step is finding out if you qualify for Medicaid and\/or CHIP by answering a few questions on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/screener\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare.gov<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you do qualify for Medicaid and\/or CHIP, you have the option of applying for coverage either through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/create-account\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Insurance Marketplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or through the Medicaid agency within your state. Short-term health insurance plans<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also referred to as term-health insurance or temp insurance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-short-term-health-insurance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short-term plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available in some states for purchase throughout the year. This type of coverage can bridge the gap between policies. Short-term insurance can be canceled anytime without a penalty. Supplemental health insurance<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplemental health insurance plans are designed to help individuals and families pay for extra costs that are not offered in their primary policy during hospital stays (for example, deductibles and a private room), according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statefarm.com\/insurance\/health\/supplemental-insurance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State Farm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aetna.com\/individuals-families\/voluntary-benefits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aetna<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states that supplemental insurance may also help with essential bills, such as mortgage and groceries. While this tax penalty no longer applies on the federal level\u2014a change that took place in 2019\u2014six states issued their own fine for not having coverage.
