{"id":10520,"date":"2020-04-21T10:46:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-21T14:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=10520"},"modified":"2020-10-08T14:39:15","modified_gmt":"2020-10-08T18:39:15","slug":"ibs-and-pregnancy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibs-and-pregnancy\/","title":{"rendered":"How to safely manage IBS symptoms during pregnancy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy provides all kinds of new experiences and strange discomforts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014late night insomnia, morning sickness and nausea, heartburn and indigestion\u2014but what if one of your pregnancy complaints is diarrhea, constipation, or any other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/upset-stomach-pregnancy-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes to your bowel habits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gastro.org\/practice-guidance\/gi-patient-center\/topic\/irritable-bowel-syndrome-ibs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritable Bowel Syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IBS) is a common condition that presents itself through a variety of chronic digestive symptoms, including stomach pain, gas and bloating, diarrhea, and constipation. It\u2019s possible to manage IBS and pregnancy, but it\u2019s also important to take extra care and caution when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwhealth.org\/gi\/gastrointestinal-problems-during-pregnancy\/14446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">identifying your symptoms if you\u2019re pregnant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do I have IBS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible that you can develop IBS during pregnancy; however, it\u2019s important to look at all of your symptoms first and discern whether there\u2019s another underlying problem. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible for patients who are pregnant to develop IBS, but is important to note that symptoms of morning sickness and heartburn are unrelated and should be addressed separately,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simranjit Bedi, DO, a Philadelphia internist doing a fellowship in gastroenterology. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bedi also says that ingredients in prenatal vitamins, like iron and calcium, could cause constipation. A patient who suddenly develops diarrhea shouldn\u2019t assume that it\u2019s IBS and should first be evaluated for other conditions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is IBS worse during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A patient who has already been diagnosed with IBS pre-pregnancy may be concerned that their pregnancy might trigger or worsen their gastrointestinal symptoms\u2014and with good reason. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitmedicalgroup.com\/doctor\/cminano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cecilia Minano<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, MPH, a gastroenterologist at Summit Medical Group in New Jersey says, \u201cIBS can worsen in pregnancy due to hormonal changes, anxiety, and stress.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can IBS cause pregnancy complications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most pregnant women want to know that their pregnancy side effects or symptoms won\u2019t impact their unborn baby. \u201cDiarrhea that is not evaluated over time can lead to dehydration and put stress on the fetus,\u201d says Dr. Bedi, who added that prolonged constipation can increase stomach pain and discomfort, and in severe situations lead to muscle or nerve damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been mixed opinions on whether there are additional risks to a pregnancy when a pregnant mother has IBS, says Dr. Minano. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cghjournal.org\/article\/S1542-3565%2812%2900217-0\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UK study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that women who have Irritable Bowel Syndrome are at higher risk of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S088985530200136X?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that research has been limited on the impact of IBS on pregnancies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Minano says that the UK study that linked IBS with an increase in miscarriage might not necessarily mean that the risk is associated with IBS symptoms. \u201cThe authors acknowledge additional factors could have played a role in these outcomes including depression, smoking, or other medical conditions,\u201d Dr. Minano explains. \u201cIt\u2019s important to maintain good prenatal care, so your doctor can monitor and treat any underlying or new gastrointestinal symptoms.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are some treatment options for IBS during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A pregnant woman who is experiencing IBS symptoms will ideally find a solution and treatment plan to ease her symptoms and make her more comfortable. If she does not have a history of IBS, the first step is to consult her physician for further evaluation and management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you have IBS and are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ibs-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">already on medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should talk to your physician to see if it would be advisable to continue taking the medication,\u201d Dr. Bedi says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before changing your diet, keep a food journal to record which foods seem to cause what symptoms, and talk to your doctor about what you find. Patients will likely be asked to introduce lifestyle changes to try and manage IBS symptoms. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gastro.org\/practice-guidance\/gi-patient-center\/topic\/irritable-bowel-syndrome-ibs#Treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some lifestyle changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can improve IBS symptoms in pregnancy include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating small, well-balanced meals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have a consultation with a dietician to identify food triggers and ways to improve your nutrition<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing fiber (like whole grains, barley, broccoli)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/psyllium-husk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">psyllium husk powder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to add fiber<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drinking plenty of water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintaining physical activity, like walking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing dairy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking stool softeners (if constipated)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking laxatives, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/miralax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miralax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (if constipated)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/probiotics-do-they-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking a probiotic<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding relaxation techniques to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-surprising-ways-stress-affects-your-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manage stress<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibsdiets.org\/fodmap-diet\/fodmap-food-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low FODMAP diet<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may also be able to take a stool softener or laxative, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/miralax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miralax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, if constipated\u2014but you should always speak with your doctor before starting any vitamins, over-the-counter medications, supplements, or therapies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Bedi and Dr. Minano say that there are a variety of medications that are prescribed for patients with IBS that are likely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/taking-medicine-while-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; however, it\u2019s important to discuss your medications with your doctor.
