In the past few years, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been under the media microscope for some of its rarer, more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=a1f01e8e-97e9-11de-b91d-553856d89593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">severe side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serious side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and complications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2921747\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use has been linked to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tendonitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (swelling of the tendons) and tendon rupture. These adverse effects may include symptoms such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bruising<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tearing, and an inability to move the tendon area. Tendinitis and tendon rupture are most commonly in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Achilles tendon<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> located at the back of the ankle, although they can also be experienced in the shoulder, hands, and other tendon areas. People who are over the age of 60, taking corticosteroid drugs, or have a history of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kidney, lung, or heart transplants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be at an increased risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture while taking levofloxacin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There&#8217;s also a chance that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nerve damage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peripheral neuropathy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in the arms, legs, hands, and feet, which manifests as pain, weakness, burning, tingling, or numbness. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central nervous system (CNS) effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like seizures, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lightheadedness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tremors, confusion, hallucinations, and severe headaches are possible serious side effects of levofloxacin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.janssenlabels.com\/package-insert\/product-patient-information\/LEVAQUIN-medication-guide.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may cause serious <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as QT prolongation and torsades de pointes. These heart rhythm problems may be characterized by a fast or irregular heartbeat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people who take <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may also experience a greater sensitivity to sunlight, leading to severe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunburn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, blisters, and skin rashes after just a short time in the sun. While taking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, avoid the sun (and tanning beds) if possible. If you are in the sun for a short period of time, wear <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunscreen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and clothes that cover the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin may also cause <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characterized by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dark urine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vomiting, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stomach pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, light-colored stool, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yellowing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the skin or whites of the eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has the relatively rare condition <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ninds.nih.gov\/Disorders\/Patient-Caregiver-Education\/Fact-Sheets\/Myasthenia-Gravis-Fact-Sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">myasthenia gravis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might see their symptoms worsen with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment. These symptoms include <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle weakness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, drooping eyelids, difficulty swallowing, and blurred or double vision.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some people, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may trigger an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allergic reaction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that consists of rash, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, swelling, itching, and\u2014in the worst case\u2014anaphylaxis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other serious side effects of levofloxacin include aortic aneurysms, intestinal infections, joint problems, and changes in blood sugar levels. Before taking levofloxacin, tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of any medical conditions, including heart problems, joint problems, and diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects, whether common or more serious, &#8220;can occur hours to weeks after exposure and may potentially be permanent,&#8221; says Dr. Friedlander, citing a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-drug-safety-communication-fda-updates-warnings-oral-and-injectable-fluoroquinolone-antibiotics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That&#8217;s a pretty robust list of potential <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adverse effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it might seem intimidating, but remember that these are pretty uncommon. It&#8217;s just good to keep them in mind, especially for anyone with pre-existing conditions that could be worsened with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"levofloxacin-dosages\">Levofloxacin dosage<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A typical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin dosage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is 250, 500, or 750 mg every 24 hours for five to 10 days. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levofloxacin can be administered to adults and children weighing 30 kg (~66 lbs) or more with functioning kidneys.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The actual dosage may vary based on the type of infection treated, administration route, patient&#8217;s age, weight, and other medications.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a relatively strong antibiotic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">levofloxacin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may start improving symptoms within a few days. However, the full course of antibiotics should be taken as prescribed by your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even if you feel better sooner than expected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below are the dosages <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2019\/020634s071lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommended by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for adults with normal renal function.
