People are experiencing serious financial hardship and career disarray\u2014not to mention they could be sick or watched loved ones get sick. All of this has an impact on mental health.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, widespread social distancing to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus means that we are<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-isolation-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all experiencing more isolation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our day-to-day lives than most of us normally would. And that has an effect on mental health. A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0140673620304608\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lancet<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the psychological effects of social distancing can range from anger to fear to post-traumatic stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This research is bringing a new mental health crisis into the conversation alongside COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamainternalmedicine\/fullarticle\/2764404\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new report in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Internal Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states that we should expect an \u201coverflow of mental illness that will inevitably emerge from this pandemic.\u201d Large-scale disasters \u201care almost always accompanied by increases in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, a broad range of other mental and behavioral disorders, domestic violence, and child abuse,\u201d write the authors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The big numbers and large-scale theories are scary enough. But, when you\u2019re experiencing poor sleep, nightmares, or seemingly never-ending stress\u2014or trying to cope with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, substance use and abuse, and loneliness\u2014it\u2019s even more challenging when stuck at home.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are seeing a few things that are becoming really prevalent for people right now\u2014some people are feeling really isolated and lonely, some are feeling incredibly overwhelmed and suffocated being at home with their family or roommates or significant other, and some people are experiencing major sleep disturbances because your body doesn\u2019t forget the stressors of your normal routine being upended,\u201d says Jenn Weaver, CAGS, LMHC, CRC at Polaris Counseling &amp; Consulting in Providence, Rhode Island. \u201cSymptoms of depression are going up, but when you\u2019re not showering and you\u2019re staying in bed a lot of people are asking themselves, \u2018Am I depressed or just surviving quarantine?\u2019 It\u2019s tricky, because they mirror each other. And we all need someone to talk to about this stuff.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But talking to someone these days comes with new challenges. Because support groups and counseling resources are harder to access in person, the mental healthcare landscape is having to reshape itself. Now, we\u2019re seeing a big shift of services and opportunities to connect with others being done remotely. This remote style of therapy is called \u201cteletherapy\u201d or \u201ctelepsychiatry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is teletherapy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teletherapy is just like the mental health therapy services you\u2019re familiar with\u2014but instead of meeting in your therapist or counselor\u2019s office, you meet via live video conferencing or by telephone. \u201cAfter we closed our in-person appointments and offered our current clients teletherapy sessions, about 50% said that they would be willing to try it,\u201d Weaver says. \u201cOut of the clients who were opened-minded to it, all of them were like \u2018Wow, that was way better than I thought it would be.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And other counselors around the country are also seeing a positive response from their clients who are transitioning from in-person visits to virtual meetings. \u201cWe asked our clients to give teletherapy a try because they thought it wouldn\u2019t be the same or as helpful but those who were willing to give it a try after the first few minutes always remark how normal it feels\u2014and how helpful and really reassuring it is,\u201d says Evan Center, MS, LCPC, president of Center Counseling in Bozeman, Montana. \u201cI would encourage anyone considering therapy right now to really give teletherapy a try. It\u2019s worth it to have someone to talk to.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But after you decide you\u2019re ready to talk to someone, it\u2019s important to know how you are going to pay for a session (or if you qualify for free teletherapy). Because of the COVID-19 crisis, Medicare and many insurance companies have expanded coverage (at least for the short-term) to include telehealth counseling from psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health counselors, and licensed clinical social workers. Certain forms of group therapy also may be covered. Read: You can have a therapy appointment\u2014at-home, in the immediate future, at the same rates you otherwise would have paid for an in-person session.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/telehealth\/\"><b>What to expect at your first telehealth appointment<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to access teletherapy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>If you have private health insurance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, providers such as Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield are currently waiving copays for in-network telehealth visits, including those not related to COVID-19 symptoms (i.e., mental health issues and symptoms). Currently states such as Montana, Massachusetts, California, and Arizona have ordered all insurers to cover telehealth services, and mandates in other states could be coming. But it\u2019s all on a state-by-state basis\u2014and as Weaver puts it, \u201cIt changes every day. But for the most part, during this pandemic most [in-network] telehealth counseling sessions are covered in full.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><b>your employer may offer an <\/b><a href=\"http:\/\/workplacementalhealth.org\/Mental-Health-Topics\/Employee-Assistance-Programs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>employee assistance program<\/b><\/a><b> (EAP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of your benefits package, which provides services (like counseling) that help employees address particular issues that interfere with their well-being and work performance, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Call your HR department or speak to your employer about these opportunities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To see if your insurance company covers your counseling sessions, call the customer service number on the back of your insurance card and ask. One possible exception of not being qualified for free teletherapy through your private insurance is if you are seeing someone over state line (like if you live in New Hampshire and are seeing a therapist in Massachusetts).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re one of the <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/medicare\/state-indicator\/total-medicare-beneficiaries\/?currentTimeframe=0&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>59 million Americans<\/b><\/a><b> covered by Medicare<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, new pandemic-related legislation has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/6074\/text\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waived the long-standing restrictions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on your use of telehealth services (for the duration of this public health emergency, that is). The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, formerly restricted the use of phones to conduct telehealth visits due to privacy concerns, but those restrictions have now been lifted. That means you can have your appointments over apps with no repercussions to your Medicare coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you\u2019re covered by <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicaid.gov\/medicaid\/benefits\/downloads\/medicaid-chip-telehealth-toolkit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Medicaid<\/b><\/a><b> and Children\u2019s Health Insurance Programs (CHIP)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, telehealth coverage typically varies by state. COVID-19 emergency coverage has extended services for new and established patients across the country\u2014including individual and family therapy. Restrictions on location and services are temporarily lifted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you don\u2019t have insurance at all<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014or if it doesn\u2019t currently cover any telehealth or teletherapy services for you\u2014there are other resources available, such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fqhc.org\/find-an-fqhc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Federally Qualified Health Centers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These are community-based centers that offer care including mental health services and substance abuse resources. They\u2019re authorized to provide telehealth services even if you\u2019ve never been a patient at one before and are also required to prioritize patients who live inside their service areas. If this sounds like a good option for you, you can search for a health center in your neighborhood <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Privately paying for teletherapy is another option, if it\u2019s affordable for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to join substance abuse support groups<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Struggling with addiction and substance use\/abuse can feel impossible when you don\u2019t have the support you need. But fortunately, group therapy such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous resources are accessible virtually right now. Websites like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aa-intergroup.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online Intergroup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, provide a directory of Zoom meetings along with call-in numbers.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virtual-na.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtual Narcotics Anonymous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers meetings over the phone and online as well. You can search for meetings through Narcotics Anonymous<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/virtual-na.org\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to find a therapist<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know what the financial freedoms and restrictions of teletherapy are, the next step is to find the best therapist, counselor, and program <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/finding-right-medication-doctor-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for you and your needs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And yes, that can be an intimidating search if you don\u2019t already have a therapist who is offering teletherapy. But the good news is that once again, there are resources to find a good match.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Use an online directory<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teladoc.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teladoc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/business.amwell.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amwell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhelp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Better Help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdlive.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MDLive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.doctorondemand.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctor on Demand<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are all reputable websites that connect you with mental health professionals. Additionally, Psychology Today has a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/therapists\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">therapist directory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that allows you to filter therapists who offer teletherapy, as well as filter by region and specialty. \u201cIf you know you would prefer to talk to a female therapist or a therapist that\u2019s older than you, you can make sure that\u2019s what you find,\u201d Weaver says. \u201cThink about what you need. Try to find that specifically, and don\u2019t click on someone just because they are in your zip code.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many freestanding local mental health clinics or hospital-based psychiatric residency clinics are reasonable places to look too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Schedule a meet and greet before your first appointment\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Center and Weaver recommend searching online to find a therapist in your region that seems like they might be a good fit. And then try a baby step approach. \u201cIt\u2019s such a normal, practical request to ask a potential therapist to simply talk on the phone for 10 or 15 minutes so that you can have a first impression of each other,\u201d Center says. \u201cThere should be a natural trust and ease with talking to your potential therapist. With that, you will be able to jump more deeply into your conversations and sessions\u2014and you will actually see and feel the benefits. Most people have the ability to read others quickly and you shouldn\u2019t be bashful if the first short phone call isn\u2019t the right fit. That\u2019s okay. Just say it and move on.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weaver agrees: \u201cAny good therapist would agree to take a 10-minute phone call with you to answer questions and meet one another to determine if it\u2019s the right match or not. Simply ask, \u2018I\u2019m new to this, can I have a 10-minute phone call with you to see if this is a good fit?\u2019 Worst case scenario is someone says no and in that case you wouldn\u2019t want to work with that therapist regardless.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Ask for a recommendation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way to find a reputable therapist in your area is by the good old-fashioned word of mouth method. \u201cIt\u2019s more common in 2020 to talk about your therapist, so if you\u2019re comfortable ask the people in your circle,\u201d Weaver says.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you find the right fit, schedule your sessions to be most optimal for you. \u201cTherapy is what you need it to be,\u201d Center says. \u201cIt\u2019s really nice to talk to someone who is not emotionally invested in your life. I\u2019m not going to come into play\u2014this is about you and your thoughts and feelings. Get it off your chest. To have someone who is not locked in the house with you who can listen and speak to you impartially is really powerful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the other bright side? All the time saved that you would\u2019ve spent commuting to and from your appointment, sitting in the waiting room, and getting yourself ready to get out the door. \u201cWe see a lot of people who try teletherapy stick with it because it\u2019s way easier to fit into your day\u2014and whether there\u2019s a pandemic or not, it\u2019s sometimes hard to find the time.
