Nearly 50% of people who are diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/about-adaa\/press-room\/facts-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and Depression Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ADAA).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you or a loved one receive this dual diagnosis, you might wonder if that means double the treatment. Not necessarily\u2014there are medications that treat both depression and anxiety. Your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will work with you to determine the right treatment plan for your specific needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I have depression and anxiety at the same time?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression and anxiety are two different <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disorders that are often comorbid. Meaning, they occur at the same time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression is a mental disorder that is commonly identified with intense feelings of hopelessness, despair, worthlessness, and overwhelming sadness. More than 16% of Americans will experience depression (sometimes called major depressive disorder) at some point during their lifetime, according to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9290-depression\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While most people will experience feelings of sadness at some point, with depression, these feelings are prolonged\u2014lasting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/major-depression.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or more\u2014and severe enough to impact daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are characterized by excessive worry, nervousness, or fear that impacts everyday functioning. Without treatment, anxiety can get worse over time. There are a number of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with their own set of unique symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychiatry.org\/patients-families\/anxiety-disorders\/what-are-anxiety-disorders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2% of people in the U.S.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generalized anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GAD). According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/providerdirectory.uabmedicine.org\/provider\/Richard+Shelton\/569449\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Richard Shelton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a psychiatrist and the vice chair of research at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, GAD symptoms include persistent fear and worry that is often difficult to control. Other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SAD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phobias<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vehophobia, or fear of driving<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ocd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive compulsive disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ptsd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-traumatic stress disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PTSD)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shelton says that diagnosing a patient with both depression and anxiety should be done carefully. \u201cI would only give someone a comorbid <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> diagnosis if they had the anxiety problems before the start of the depression\u2014or if they had a specific kind of anxiety, like anxiety attacks,\u201d he says. He also added that, with these criteria in mind, around 40% of his patients receive both an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and depression diagnosis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are similarities and differences between depression and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cBoth <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and depression are characterized by feelings of distress,\u201d says Dr. Shelton. However, anxiety itself is a broader concept that encompasses symptoms that are seen in a variety of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental illnesses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, adds Dr. Shelton. Additionally, general feelings of anxiety may occur as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom of depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but depression is not considered a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom of anxiety<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression and anxiety may share some of the same signs and symptoms, such as avoiding activities that were once previously enjoyed, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headaches or changes in appetite<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and exhaustion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People that are depressed typically experience low energy, low motivation, guilt, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suicidal thoughts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014these factors distinguish depression from anxiety, says Dr. Shelton. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a treatment that involves changing your way of thinking as well as your behavioral patterns. Some CBT approaches<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19909667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behavioral activation and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Plummer says that an alternative treatment that some patients with depression and anxiety find helpful is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/cannabidiol-cbd-what-we-know-and-what-we-dont-2018082414476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cannabidiol (CBD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a component of cannabis that doesn\u2019t create the \u201chigh\u201d of typical marijuana use. \u201cMany state that CBD is shown to have positive effects for depression and anxiety, but too much cannabis may be associated with panic attacks,\u201d she advises. The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> below can treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panic disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generalized anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">phobias, in addition to depression<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase the activity of certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurotransmitters, such as serotonin or norepinephrine,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the brain.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best treatment depends on which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a patient has. \u201cFor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generalized anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GAD), both <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are first in line,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hgpharmacist.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Plummer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D. She adds that the most commonly prescribed medications to treat both depression and anxiety are <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a class of medications that have a broad therapeutic range. They can be used to treat <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, depression, or, in some cases, both at the same time. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/ssri-antidepressants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">block the reuptake<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or reabsorption, of serotonin. As a result, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> increase serotonin in the brain.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SNRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are a class of medication that are similar to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because they too inhibit reuptake and increase the level of serotonin. Unlike <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they also increase norepinephrine, which is considered a component of our brain\u2019s stress response.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antidepressants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TCAs) increase serotonin and norepinephrine levels to improve mood. However, they also block the actions of acetylcholine. These drugs can cause more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like low <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood pressure<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">weight gain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">constipation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) than other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They\u2019re not a first-line treatment for depression and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/maois\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monoamine oxidase inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are typically used for depression, but they can also be prescribed for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panic disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social anxiety disorder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MAOIs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> work by blocking the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters and therefore increasing monoamine <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neurotransmitters<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the brain. Monoamine neurotransmitters include serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Because they tend to cause more side effects than other antidepressants, MAOIs are usually reserved for people who have tried other antidepressants without improvements in their condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Shelton says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benzodiazepines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand-name<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drugs like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alprazolam\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alprazolam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/valium\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valium<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diazepam<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are considered poor choices for someone being treated for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety disorders<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and depression. It is important that a patient discuss the type of medication that is right for them with a medical professional.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<table
