The statistics in this article highlight the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/symptoms-of-depression-and-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, causes, prevalence, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of anxiety to help provide a better understanding of anxiety disorders and how they affect society.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply put, anxiety is the body\u2019s response to worry and fear. \u201cHowever, [anxiety] is not that simple, as there is a wide range of how deeply anxiety affects people and to what extent it interferes with their quality of life,\u201c says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.comprehendthemind.com\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Sanam Hafeez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PsyD, a neuropsychologist at Comprehend the Mind in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/anxiety-disorders\/index.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a multitude of anxiety disorders that cause anxiety, worry, and stress due to social interactions, personal health, work, or a particular phobia. Types of anxiety disorders include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generalized anxiety disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phobia-related disorders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety disorder<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people with anxiety, their condition affects their ability to function in everyday life. The NIMH reports that for those with generalized anxiety disorder, symptoms can include restlessness, feeling on edge, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and muscle tension. Many anxiety disorders cause people to experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-attack-vs-panic-attack\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panic attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are periods of intense fear triggered by an object or situation that can reach their peak within minutes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnxiety affects people in a range of ways, often depending on the nature of the anxiety,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jillstoddard.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jill Stoddard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ph.D., a psychologist based in Massachusetts. She explains that avoidance of the triggers of anxiety is common ground for all anxiety disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor example, people with panic disorder may stop exercising or having sex to avoid increases in negative physiological symptoms; people with agoraphobia may avoid malls, crowds, driving, or flying\u2014any situation where they might have panic symptoms and not be able to escape or get help,\u201d Dr. Stoddard says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"generalized-anxiety-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generalized anxiety disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common anxiety disorders, according to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nami.org\/about-mental-illness\/mental-health-conditions\/anxiety-disorders\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NAMI). GAD is diagnosed after a person has anxiety with little to provoke it most days for at least six months. The persistent anxiety begins to affect a person\u2019s social, work, and home life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the NIMH, symptoms of GAD may include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling restless or on edge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling fatigued often<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty focusing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive feelings of worry that are difficult to control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"panic-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/publications\/panic-disorder-when-fear-overwhelms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are characterized by unexpected and repeated panic attacks, according to the NIMH. People with panic attacks may try to avoid situations or constantly worry about when the next panic attack may happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks cause a combination of mental and physical symptoms. Per the NIMH, symptoms of panic attacks include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden, overwhelming anxiety or fear<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling a loss of control<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart palpitations or increased heart rate\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating or chills<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking or trembling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sense of terror<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stomach pain or nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"phobia-related-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phobia-related disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merckmanuals.com\/home\/mental-health-disorders\/anxiety-and-stressor-related-disorders\/specific-phobias\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merck Manuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical reference guide, phobia-related disorders involve a fear or apprehensiveness about specific objects or situations. While some of these objects or situations may have reason to cause fear, the fear felt by the individual with a phobia is disproportionate to the actual danger posed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phobias can be related to a variety of objects or situations, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of flying<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of heights<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of spiders<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"agoraphobia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agoraphobia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Merck Manuals describes agoraphobia as anxiety or fear about being in a situation or place with no easy escape or no immediate access to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agoraphobia and panic disorder often occur together, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mirecc.va.gov\/visn22\/panic_and_agoraphobia.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a program under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Per MIRECC, an agoraphobia diagnosis requires that a person has experienced severe fear or anxiety for at least six months in at least two of the following situations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using public transportation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in open spaces (e.g., parks, bridges, or fields)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in enclosed spaces (e.g., theaters, stores, or restaurants)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in a crowd or standing in line<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being outside of the house unaccompanied<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"social-anxiety-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety disorder<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social anxiety disorder, previously known as a social phobia, is intense anxiety about being judged or rejected in social situations. It is often tied to specific performance settings, according to Merck Manuals. People with social anxiety disorder might realize their worry is unreasonable, but still feel powerless and panicky in social situations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"other-forms-of-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other forms of anxiety<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two other common disorders have anxiety as one of the key symptoms, but are no longer classified as anxiety disorders in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DSM-5<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which is the standard classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals in the United States. They are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20533366\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obsessive-compulsive disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (OCD) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptsd.va.gov\/professional\/treat\/essentials\/dsm5_ptsd.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">post-traumatic stress disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PTSD).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ocd-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a disorder where individuals have recurring, unwanted thoughts, ideas, or sensations (obsessions), the urge to do something repetitively (compulsions), or both. Intrusive thoughts or impulses may frequently recur, causing feelings of anxiety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of OCD behaviors include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Checking objects (such as locks, ovens, and lights) repeatedly to reduce the fear of harm\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Repeating a name, phrase, or behavior because the individual fears something terrible will happen if they don\u2019t<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleaning compulsions, which may occur because there is a fear of contamination from things like dirt and germs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ordering and arranging things in a certain way to reduce discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-ptsd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> happens when a person has difficulty recovering after a traumatic event. Symptoms may happen months or longer after the event. There is a wide variety of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ptsd-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PTSD symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some of which include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unwanted, recurrent, distressing memories or flashbacks of the event<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nightmares about the event<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoidance of things related to the event, such as people, places, or situations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional distress and physical reactivity after traumatic reminders (often called triggers)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"anxiety-vs-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety vs. depression<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to note that there is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-vs-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">difference between anxiety and depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a very basic sense, anxiety is an excessive feeling of worry, whereas depression is an excessive feeling of hopelessness and worthlessness. Someone can have both anxiety and depression at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-anxiety\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health disorders worldwide.
