The answer is pretty straightforward: It doesn\u2019t, as long as you drink responsibly.<br \/>\n<span data-sheets-root=\"1\" data-sheets-value=\"{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-sheets-userformat=\"{&quot;2&quot;:6849,&quot;3&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:0},&quot;9&quot;:1,&quot;10&quot;:2,&quot;12&quot;:0,&quot;14&quot;:{&quot;1&quot;:2,&quot;2&quot;:0},&quot;15&quot;:&quot;Arial&quot;}\" data-sheets-formula=\"=CONCATENATE(R[0]C[-2],R[0]C[-3],R[0]C[-1])\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is no direct interaction between birth control pills and alcohol, and no reduction in the effectiveness of birth control if somebody drinks alcohol,\u201d says Sally Rafie, Pharm.D., founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/birthcontrolpharmacist.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth Control Pharmacist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an organization that provides support to pharmacists who prescribe birth control directly to patients (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naspa.us\/resource\/contraceptives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the practice is legal in 10 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Impairment is another story<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t let that fool you, though\u2014depending on how much you drink, the consumption of alcohol can impact the ability of your birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. How? Drinking too much alcohol can lead to impairment and impairment can lead to things like falling asleep without taking your pill, taking your pill at the wrong time, or forgetting to take your pill altogether (and all of these things <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> impact the efficacy of your pills). Not to mention, impairment can lead to issues of consent\/non-consent and not using a barrier protection, which should always be used to prevent sexually transmitted infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBirth control can be taken any time of day. Drinking so much (after taking your pill) that you start vomiting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you took your birth control in the last couple of hours and then vomit, it is very possible that you are vomiting up the medication,\u201d Dr. Rafie explains. \u201cSo that would basically mean that you\u2019ve missed a dose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a big deal, Dr. Rafie says, because birth control pills <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reproductiveaccess.org\/resource\/pill-user-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">must be taken consistently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and at the same time each day in order to maintain effectiveness. When used correctly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/birth-control-pill\/how-effective-is-the-birth-control-pill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they are up to 99% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but in reality <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opa\/pregnancy-prevention\/birth-control-methods\/birth-control-pills\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between 5% and 9% of women taking birth control pills become pregnant each year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (usually, this is the result of missing doses or not taking it correctly). Missing even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dose is a potential problem\u2014but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/unintendedpregnancy\/pdf\/248124_fig_2_3_4_final_tag508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">missing two or more consecutive doses is worse, requiring back-up contraception and a specific protocol to get you back on track with your dosing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Centers for Disease Control reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, if you are drinking alcohol frequently or in excess and become pregnant, that may increase the risk of adverse effects to a fetus.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Drink responsibly if you are taking birth control pills<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to ensure birth control and alcohol doesn\u2019t become a problem? Moderation, says Dr. James Simon, MD, medical director of the Washington, D.C.\u2013based <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intimmedicine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IntimMedicine Specialists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/moderate-binge-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderation for women is defined as a maximum of one drink per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAvoiding alcohol is a good thing for everyone, but on a practical basis, alcohol is a part of our culture,\u201d Dr. Simon says. \u201cWe are not going to get rid of alcohol, but to reduce the amount and the frequency of use\u2014that would be my goal for any woman coming in [to my practice] wanting to use birth control pills.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Rafie agrees, adding that she encourages patients to consider their own level of alcohol consumption when choosing a method of birth control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a patient shares with me that she binge drinks on the weekends \u2026 the pill might not be a good option for her,\u201d Dr. Rafie says. \u201cThe good news is there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and we will find what works best.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of these options include the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opa\/pregnancy-prevention\/birth-control-methods\/patch\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opa\/pregnancy-prevention\/birth-control-methods\/implant\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the implant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opa\/pregnancy-prevention\/birth-control-methods\/vaginal-ring\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal ring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opa\/pregnancy-prevention\/birth-control-methods\/iud\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intrauterine device<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (IUD), a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/birth-control-shot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-shot-depo-provera-contraceptive\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-Provera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and a new progestin-only birth control pill (aka mini pill), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/slynd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slynd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which offers a more forgiving dosing window (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdmag.com\/medical-news\/fda-approves-oral-contraceptive-slynd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Slynd received FDA approval in 2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). And if it turns out the traditional pill is still the best option for you, despite your drinking habits?
