I don\u2019t remember a time in my life that I wasn\u2019t visited by the familiar intrusive thoughts of worry and \u201cwhat-ifs.\u201d While I may have experienced some physical symptoms like increased heart rate with my anxiety episodes, it was always the worry that let me know anxiety was the culprit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When one night I had sudden hot flashes, a racing heartbeat, mild chest pain, and sweating, I thought I must be having a heart attack. I hadn\u2019t felt anxious\u2014at least not until I thought I was dying\u2014so I didn\u2019t consider the possibility this was anxiety-related. It went away after about half an hour, and I realized I was okay. When it happened again a few weeks later, I talked to my doctor and learned I was having panic attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety attacks and panic attacks are often used interchangeably\u2014but there are some key differences between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c&#8217;Anxiety attack&#8217; is a layman\u2019s term for a feeling of heightened anxiety that generally builds over time due to excessive worry,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shanaolmstead.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shana Olmstead<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MA, LMHC, a psychotherapist in Kirkland, Washington. \u201cA panic attack can feel more like it comes out of the blue, and can be due to underlying anxiety or stress but not necessarily happen at the time of the stressful situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the the escalating intensity of worry in response to a real or perceived internal or external stressor,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mindpathcare.com\/staff\/sharon-f-thomas-ms-lpc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharon D. Thomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MS, LCMHC, a licensed clinical mental health counselor at MindPath Care Centers in Raleigh, North Carolina. \u201cThis worry builds and the excessiveness of the stress becomes overwhelming, which can feel like an attack.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPanic attacks are similarly influenced by an internal\/external stressor,\u201d says Thomas, \u201cbut instead of the escalating or building response from the stressor of an anxiety attack, the fear responses are abrupt, intense, and highly disruptive to the individual\u2019s capacity to function in response to the fear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety attacks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are not a recognized condition, but rather a layman\u2019s term for the feelings of increased anxiety. (They are often a symptom of a recognized anxiety disorder.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are in response to a stressor (real or perceived).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come on slowly and build with excessive worry.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can feel overwhelming.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is more thought-focused, but can have some physical symptoms.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic attacks:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are recognized as a diagnosable condition, usually as part of a panic disorder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come on suddenly and have symptoms that peak within minutes of the start of the attack.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are intense.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can be due to underlying anxiety, but don\u2019t necessarily occur during a time of anxiety or stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occur in episodes, which may or may not happen again.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can occur on their own or as part of a different anxiety disorder such as social anxiety, generalized anxiety, or a specific phobia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have at least four of the symptoms of panic attacks occurring within one episode.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Typically last between 20 to 30 minutes, and rarely more than an hour.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do during an attack<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The goal during both anxiety attacks and panic attacks is to calm down. There are immediate steps that can be taken to help with both types of attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Try self-calming<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by deep breathing in for a count of four, and breathing out for a count of six. Then repeat. This helps slow your breathing and heart rate down and creates an overall feeling of calm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Practice mindfulness <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise. Observe five things you can see, four things you can hear, three things you can touch, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. Pick up or touch objects and notice their features: Are they soft or hard? What color are they? Are they heavy or light?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Practice progressive muscle relaxation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Starting with the feet, tense each muscle in the body for 30 seconds and release, one at a time.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Self-talk. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remind yourself you are safe and this will pass.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Seek out help<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by talking with a friend, a medical professional, or anyone else who is calming in the moment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for anxiety and recurring panic attacks depends on the underlying cause for them. It\u2019s important to see a medical practitioner for a proper diagnosis. Treatment for anxiety and panic disorders can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lifestyle changes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Practicing relaxation exercises such as yoga, exercising regularly, getting<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-sleep-better\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enough<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/sleep-apnea-treatment-and-medications\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and avoiding stimulants like smoking and caffeine can help with overall feelings of anxiety.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Focusing on thinking and behavioral patterns.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Exposure therapy.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Repeatedly experiencing the panic sensations in a controlled setting such that they induce less fear over time. Panic attacks can be treated with fast-acting anxiety medications like benzodiazepines such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ativan-vs-xanax\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax or Ativan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Benzodiazepines can be habit-forming, and their use should be carefully monitored by a healthcare provider. Antidepressants can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-antidepressants\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">affect different people in different ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014follow your healthcare provider\u2019s directions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are anxiety and panic attacks dangerous?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While anxiety and panic attacks feel very distressing, they are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsinform.scot\/illnesses-and-conditions\/mental-health\/panic-disorder#symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, the first time someone experiences these symptoms, they should go to the ER to rule out something more serious like a heart attack or blood clot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have recurring anxiety or panic attacks usually begin to recognize the sensations and are able to distinguish them from<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/signs-of-heart-problems\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">something more serious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and panic attacks rarely last longer than an hour, and usually less than half an hour. If the symptoms are lasting longer than usual, are more intense, feel different than they usually do, don\u2019t respond to efforts to calm down, have symptoms that are not consistent with a panic attack (such as pain radiating into the jaw or down either arm), or there is a question it could be something other than a anxiety or a panic attack, go to the ER.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While anxiety and panic attacks themselves are not dangerous, they can be a symptom of more serious underlying conditions. It\u2019s important to see a healthcare provider to test for physical conditions, and to find the specific cause of the attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Causes and risk factors for panic disorders<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and panic attacks can both be caused by anxiety disorders, but panic attacks can have causes that are not related to mental health,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpguide.org\/articles\/anxiety\/panic-attacks-and-panic-disorders.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitral valve prolapse (a minor cardiac problem that occurs when one of the heart\u2019s valves doesn\u2019t close correctly.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/january-thyroid-awareness-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyperthyroidism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (overactive thyroid gland)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stimulant use (amphetamines, cocaine, caffeine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication withdrawal<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a few factors that increase your risk of having panic disorders. They include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Being female. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.winchesterhospital.org\/health-library\/article?id=19963\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice as likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to experience panic disorders than men.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Genetics.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Panic disorders can run in families.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Age.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Panic disorders usually begin between the teen years and age forty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>A trigger.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-surprising-ways-stress-affects-your-body\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stressful event<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as job loss, trauma, or abuse (past or present)\u2014or even happy events such as marriage or the birth of a child\u2014can increase the chances of panic attacks.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Mental health conditions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Panic attacks can be a symptom of several mental health conditions such as agoraphobia,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or anxiety disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Substance use disorder.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Alcohol and drug use, as well as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/smoking-cessation-drugs\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, can create physical sensations like lightheadedness or fast heartbeat that can lead to feelings of anxiety.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that I know what my panic attacks feel like, I am able to talk myself through them. By recognizing what is happening, I can tell myself that these sudden hot flashes mean I am probably about to have a panic attack, and I can prepare myself.
