How old is too old?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants are medications used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/depression-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a condition that often has different symptoms in different age groups. In general, it causes prolonged feelings of sadness and loss of interest in once pleasurable activities. Many people with depression become withdrawn, hopeless, angry, lethargic, and even experience physical symptoms like weight changes or sleep problems.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants are some of the most common prescriptions in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db347.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15.4% of Americans aged 40-59<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took an antidepressant in the last 30 days.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But middle-aged adults aren\u2019t the only ones with depression. It occurs in the very young and very old, too. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/childrensmentalhealth\/data.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes that approximately 2.7 million children between ages 3 and 17 have depression, often in combination with other mental health disorders such as anxiety and behavior problems. Rates of depression in older adults are estimated in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/aging\/depression\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1% to 5% range<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but can be 10 times higher for those who require home health care or hospitalization, according to the CDC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How old do you have to be to take antidepressants?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe sooner you catch depression, the better,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rosscenter.com\/team\/mary-e-beth-salcedo-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beth Salcedo, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, past president of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/about-adaa\/people\/board-directors\/beth-salcedo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and Depression Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and medical director of the Ross Center. \u201cIt needs to be diagnosed and treated early. Typically, we try to treat it with psychotherapy, behavior therapy, and family interventions because these methods empower people and give them tools to last a lifetime. But, certainly, medication is an appropriate option. And there\u2019s not an age where I would say this person is too young or too old for antidepressants. There are so many factors that play into whether you give someone an antidepressant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does depression look like in kids?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they can share similar symptoms, kids typically experience depression differently than adults. \u201cChildren are more likely [than adults] to present with sudden mood changes, temper tantrums, and irritability rather than a depressed mood,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emedihealth.com\/experts\/natasha-nambiar\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natasha Nambiar, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a medical advisor for eMediHealth. \u201cDifficulty with sleep, weight loss, and anxiety appear more common in younger children, whereas increased eating, weight gain, and slowness in motor activity seem to increase in adolescents.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can kids be prescribed antidepressants?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The FDA has approved antidepressants for children, with use that increases with age. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/01\/180129181419.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2018 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found that kids in the youngest group of the study (3-5 years old) got just 0.8% of prescriptions for psychiatric drugs (including antidepressants), whereas adolescents accounted for 7.7%. The American Psychological Association (APA) reports that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2017\/11\/numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.4%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of kids ages 12-19 have taken antidepressants in the last month.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the best antidepressants for children?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has only approved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/free-publications-women\/depression-medicines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two drugs to treat depression in children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prozac\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluoxetine)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/ssris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a drug that helps boost levels of serotonin, one of those \u201cfeel good\u201d chemicals, in the brain\u2014is approved for kids as young as 8. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lexapro\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lexapro<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">escitalopram)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, another SSRI, is approved for kids 12 and older.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s not to say a doctor won\u2019t prescribe another antidepressant for a child. Providers can use their clinical judgment to prescribe a different antidepressant to a child, even if it\u2019s not approved by the FDA for that purpose. This is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/off-label-prescription-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-label use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some doctors prescribe certain SSRI antidepressants\u2014such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/celexa\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Celexa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (citalopram) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zoloft\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoloft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (sertraline)\u2014for off-label use in children with depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost of the SSRIs are considered safe for all age groups, and most of the drugs in this class can be widely used,\u201d says Dr. Salcedo. An older class of drugs, called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tricyclic-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tricyclic antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are not often prescribed\u2014for the young or old\u2014primarily because they have more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are more dangerous if overdosed than newer antidepressants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of what antidepressant is prescribed, experts say the drugs work best for moderate-to-severe depression (degrees of depression are based on things such as the number of symptoms, symptom duration, and how much symptoms interfere with life). Antidepressants can also work better when used in tandem with therapy, especially talk therapy or cognitive behavior therapy, which helps people change the way they think about certain situations and experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does depression look like in seniors?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression in seniors can masquerade as the normal aging process, and as such, often goes undiagnosed and untreated. \u201cSometimes depression in the elderly can mimic dementia,\u201d says Dr. Salcedo. \u201cSo you might see short-term memory loss, word-finding-difficulty, trouble with names. It\u2019s really important to rule out depression when you see cognitive impairment in the elderly.\u201d Additionally, older people are more likely than younger people to experience certain medical conditions, such as chronic pain and heart disease, that can contribute to depression.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/depression-and-older-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Aging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, other symptoms of depression in older people include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Problems sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moving or talking slowly<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in weight or appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty concentrating<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Restlessness<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suicidal thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should antidepressants be used in seniors?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although they need to be chosen carefully due to potential side effects and drug interactions, antidepressants can and should be used to treat depression in seniors. Research published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4552589\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expert Review of Neurotherapeutics<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">notes high rates of other medical conditions, cognitive decline, and suicide in older adults with untreated depression. What\u2019s more, the researchers also note that when used in conjunction with psychotherapy, antidepressants for older adults significantly improve quality of life and lower death rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the best antidepressants for elderly patients?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to antidepressants for elderly patients, most experts recommend SSRIs or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/snris\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which help increase certain brain chemicals such as serotonin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These drugs tend to have fewer serious side effects and drug interactions than older antidepressants on the market. They also seem to be just as effective in older people as they are in younger ones, although some doctors suggest starting at half a normal dose and gradually increasing it while watching for side effects and mood improvement. They are used widely, and considered safe for most people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosages are not only determined by age.
