There are many symptoms of schizophrenia, and individuals can experience them in different ways. Schizophrenia is a chronic mental illness that usually develops in early adulthood. Although symptoms are often worse at the onset of the condition, established and emerging <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/schizophrenia-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are available and effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is schizophrenia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. That can affect a person\u2019s perception of reality, social interactions, and thought processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of schizophrenia include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hallucinations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: These may include visual (seeing things that aren\u2019t there) or auditory (hearing voices) hallucinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Delusions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: These are false beliefs that a person holds, even when there is evidence they are not true.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cognitive impairment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual ways of thinking or disorganized speech\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Difficulty in social relationships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain chemical imbalances in the brain, genetic traits, and environmental factors are risk factors for schizophrenia. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/what-are-the-4-types-of-schizophrenia-and-how-can-they-affect-you\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major types<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of schizophrenia include paranoid schizophrenia, catatonic schizophrenia, undifferentiated schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cResearch suggests a combination of physical, genetic, psychological, and environmental factors can make a person more likely to develop the condition, and the condition runs in families, but no single gene has been found to be responsible,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drjudyho.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Judy Ho<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist based in California and host of the SuperCharged Life podcast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia also includes negative symptoms, which are those that take away behaviors or processes that are considered normal. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/melissa-mueller-douglas-lmsw-21094245\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa Mueller-Douglas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LMSW, a therapist in Rochester, New York, describes some of the negative symptoms of schizophrenia:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Poverty of speech:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Minimal speech or giving short responses to questions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Anhedonia:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Lack of pleasure from activities and interests that people used to enjoy. This leads to decreased involvement in the community and affects quality of life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Affective deficits:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A significantly reduced intensity in emotional expression. This can affect personal relationships with family and friends.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lack of motivation:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A person may lack the internal motivation to follow through with everyday tasks, such as getting ready in the morning.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of schizophrenia can impact the flow of everyday life, such as the \u201cability to work, have functional relationships, or take care of themselves,\u201d says Ho. \u201cIndividuals with floridly psychotic states almost always see their activities of daily functioning fall to the wayside, and they often will need structured intervention (i.e., via psychiatrist or psychologist) for most of their lives to keep symptoms at bay and to make sure their [support] team is in place in case they have a resurgence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-are-affected-by-schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people are affected by schizophrenia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia affects more than 23 million people worldwide. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12447577\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of new cases of schizophrenia is 1.2 million per year. (Frontiers in Psychiatry, 2025<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia is the third leading cause of disability worldwide. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 5% of people with schizophrenia die by suicide, usually with a higher risk at the onset of the mental illness. The risk is highest for young males who also use alcohol or drugs. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tac.org\/reports_publications\/schizophrenia-fact-sheet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment Advocacy Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2026)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia is often diagnosed in young people during their late teens to early thirties, with symptoms commonly presenting earlier in males than in females. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that a person with schizophrenia in the U.S. lives an average of 28.5 fewer years than someone without the condition. Hispanic and American Indian\/Native Alaskan people have a slightly higher prevalence of schizophrenia than white populations. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/37789743\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of American Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2025 study of U.S. communities found that the increased risk for schizophrenia in some populations corresponded more to structural inequities than genetic risk. However, males are typically diagnosed 3 to 5 years earlier, and the nature of symptoms may differ. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12206716\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontiers in Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"schizophrenia-and-violence-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schizophrenia and violence statistics<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A review of violent crime in 15 countries found that males with schizophrenia were 4.5 times more likely to commit a violent crime than those without schizophrenia. Females with schizophrenia were 10 times more likely to do so than females without the condition. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2787197\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, the prevalence of violent acts committed by people with schizophrenia is still relatively low, with a risk of less than 1 in 4 for males and less than 1 in 20 for females over 35 years. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of the increased risk for violent crimes committed by those with schizophrenia is accounted for by associated substance abuse. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4905518\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2009)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"co-occurring-disorders-and-schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co-occurring disorders and schizophrenia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with schizophrenia can also have co-occurring medical conditions. The following figures represent the percentage of people with schizophrenia who have the specified co-occurring mental health issue:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depressive symptoms: 30%-54%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Post-traumatic stress disorder: 29%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obsessive-compulsive disorder: 23%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Panic disorder: 15%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Recovery Village, 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating schizophrenia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, only around 30% of people with schizophrenia worldwide receive regular treatment; the highest percentage of people not receiving care also had the lowest income, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22271964\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulletin of the World Health Organization<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlmost every individual who is diagnosed with schizophrenia will require medication treatment, usually with an antipsychotic medication,\u201d says Ho. She says that atypical antipsychotics are often utilized, which manage symptoms of schizophrenia such as hallucinations and delusions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany times, patients will have to go through at least a couple of different medication trials to find the right type of medication and dosage for them,\u201d says Ho. She adds that clozapine is currently the most effective treatment when other medications have failed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with a mental health professional is the most effective form of therapy for schizophrenic patients, according to Ho. She explains that CBT teaches a patient how to manage thoughts and behaviors as well as identify triggers for a psychotic episode.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early intervention can have a significant impact on people with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia symptoms are often worse in the early stages of the illness, which is when the risk of suicide is highest. The majority of people with schizophrenia get better over time, not worse. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpguide.org\/articles\/mental-disorders\/schizophrenia-treatment-and-self-help.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of people will get better within five years of developing symptoms. Because schizophrenia may be genetic, people with family members who have schizophrenia or a history of psychotic symptoms may seek mental health services to detect schizophrenia and begin treatment as early as possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/schizophrenia\"><b>Save on schizophrenia medication<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-socio-economic-impact-of-schizophrenia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The socio-economic impact of schizophrenia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ripple effects of schizophrenia extend far beyond the individual, creating significant challenges for families, healthcare systems, and national economies. (The Recovery Village, 2026)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"social-stigma-and-discrimination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social stigma and discrimination<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps one of the most insidious costs of schizophrenia is pervasive social stigma and discrimination:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Misconceptions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Fueled by sensationalized media portrayals, misconceptions (e.g., &#8220;schizophrenics are violent,&#8221; &#8220;they have split personalities&#8221;) lead to fear and avoidance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Impact on Relationships<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Stigma can lead to social isolation, making it difficult to form friendships and romantic relationships and to maintain family connections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Discrimination<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Individuals with schizophrenia often face discrimination in housing, employment, and even healthcare, limiting their opportunities and exacerbating their illness. Many feel dehumanized and marginalized.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Internalized Stigma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Some individuals internalize these negative societal views, leading to low self-esteem, hopelessness, and a reduced likelihood of seeking or adhering to treatment.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This wall of prejudice is a significant barrier to recovery, arguably as debilitating as the symptoms themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"impact-on-employment-and-education\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impact on Employment and Education<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The early onset of schizophrenia often coincides with critical periods of educational and vocational development, leading to profound impacts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Education<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Many individuals experience academic decline or drop out of school, interrupting their educational trajectory and limiting future opportunities.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Employment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Rates of unemployment among individuals with schizophrenia are high. Even among those employed, underemployment is common. This isn&#8217;t due to a lack of desire or ability for many, but rather a combination of symptom interference, cognitive deficits, medication side effects, and discrimination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Poverty and Homelessness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The difficulties in maintaining employment contribute significantly to high rates of poverty and homelessness within this population. An estimated one-third of homeless individuals have a serious mental illness, with schizophrenia being a major contributor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These statistics paint a grim picture, but they also highlight clear areas where targeted interventions, like supported employment programs and anti-stigma campaigns, can make a profound difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-future-of-schizophrenia-research-and-treatment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future of schizophrenia research and treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the last few decades, the development of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/atypical-antipsychotics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atypical antipsychotics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has improved the treatment of symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations. Compared to older medications, they have fewer adverse effects such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/tardive-dyskinesia-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tardive dyskinesia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a movement disorder. However, they still have potential side effects such as weight gain and sedation. And they don\u2019t work as well for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41507454\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or trouble with thought processes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39951117\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are being researched and developed. They work on a variety of brain receptors and chemicals, and so may be more effective for different symptoms. And many so far show only mild side effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also ongoing efforts to reduce the stigma around schizophrenia and other mental health conditions.
