If you\u2019re happy with the current method of contraception that you\u2019ve been using, and you\u2019re in good health overall, there\u2019s really no reason to switch just because there\u2019s another candle on your birthday cake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is nothing about age alone that says you can\u2019t use a particular kind of birth control,\u201d explains<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drkatewhite.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kate White<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, MPH, director of the Fellowship in Family Planning at Boston Medical Center. \u201cIf you are healthy at any age, you can use anything.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of your choices include<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-birth-control-pill-contraceptive-guide\/\"><b>Birth control pills<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can take a combination pill, which contains both estrogen and progestin, or a progestin-only pill. Both come in low-dose versions, and combination pills also come in extended-cycle versions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/iud-birth-control-contraceptive-guide\/\"><b>IUDs<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Intrauterine devices are a popular form of long-acting reversible contraceptive, or LARC. Some, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mirena-52-mg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mirena<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/liletta-52-mg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liletta<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> IUDs, are hormonal forms, while others, like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paragard-intrauterine-coppe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paragard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> IUD, are copper.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-shot-depo-provera-contraceptive\/\"><b>Injections<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you choose the birth control shot, called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/depo-provera\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depo-Provera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you receive an injection of progestin every three months to prevent pregnancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-implant-nexplanon-contraceptive\/\"><b>Implants<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Another long-acting reversible contraceptive, the implant releases progestin into your body for three years from its place in your upper arm.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-patch-xulane-contraceptive\/\"><b>The patch<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Stick on your skin for three weeks, then remove. Apply a new one each month.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/birth-control-ring-nuvaring-contraceptive\/\"><b>Vaginal ring<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These are flexible, removable rings that contain both estrogen and progestin.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But one thing you can\u2019t afford to do is to ignore the whole issue. \u201cDon\u2019t give up on the conception until you know you\u2019re fully menopausal,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.yale.edu\/profile\/maryjane_minkin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Jane Minkin, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, clinical professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at the Yale University School of Medicine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means you need to go for an entire year with no menstrual periods before you bid farewell to birth control for good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><b>Prescription discount card<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look at your own risk profile<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you weigh your options, there are some health issues to consider, in your late 30s and throughout your 40s. What do you need to think about when choosing a contraceptive method? You need to weigh health-related risks of contraception against the increased risks associated with a pregnancy after 35\u2014including an unplanned pregnancy, says Wendy Askew, MD, an OB-GYN\u00a0 in San Antonio, Texas. These risks exist for women under age 35, too, but are much lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re 35 or older and you smoke, it\u2019s time to bid farewell to your birth control pills. Smoking raises your risk of cardiovascular disease anyway. But the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/birth-control-methods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">combination of hormonal birth control and smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase your risk of blood clots and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/blood-pressure-treatment-and-medications\">high blood pressure<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood clots<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are at increased risk for certain conditions like blood clots, your doctor may steer you away from certain contraceptive options. For example, combination birth control pills contain both estrogen and progestin and may raise your risk for developing blood clots. The birth control injection known as Depo-Provera is better known for being linked to an increase in bone loss over time. It does not contain estrogen, but<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2010\/020246s036lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some women may develop thrombosis after taking it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain health conditions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might also want to avoid methods containing estrogen if you have high blood pressure, or if you\u2019ve had diabetes for at least 20 years. Migraine headaches with aura might be another possible contraindication, says Dr. White.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk of developing cancer, however, is murky. Your risk of developing cancer increases with age. There may be a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1700732\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small possibility of an increased risk of breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> associated with some oral contraceptives, but it may be offset by a reduced risk of other types of cancer, like ovarian and uterine cancer. And as Dr. Askew notes, the benefit of preventing an unwanted pregnancy may very well outweigh the slight risk. Women with a family history of a particular genetic mutation for breast cancer could still consider looking at other options, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing the best birth control method<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In your late 30s and 40s, you should ask yourself\u2014and be honest about the answer\u2014if you are planning to have any children in the future.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Yes, I am planning to have children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> If the answer is yes, you can go with just about any method, except Depo-Provera. According to Dr. White, it can take a while for your fertility to return after going off Depo-Provera, and if you\u2019re in your late 30s or 40s, you don\u2019t have a lot of time to spare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Maybe I will have children.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf you think so, IUDs and implants can be great because it can give you years of not having to think about birth control while still reserving the option, in case you\u2019re not 100% sure,\u201d says Dr. White.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>No, I do not plan on having children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>.<\/strong> \u201cIf you know you are done having kids, think about [surgical] sterilization,\u201d suggests Dr. White. However, if you and your partner don\u2019t want to go that route, you can continue using a pill, a LARC, or other method, as long as you don\u2019t have any health issues that would be problematic.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control for women over 40 can help you manage symptoms of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-perimenopause\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">perimenopause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that you\u2019re experiencing. Talk to your doctor if you\u2019re concerned about symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness and discuss what methods might be best for you. If you don\u2019t have any contraindications, a method containing estrogen, like a combination birth control pill or ring, might help you manage some of those symptoms, notes Dr. Minkin. And if you\u2019re involved with a new partner, don\u2019t forget to use condoms\u2014you can get a sexually transmitted infection at any age.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your options open<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on your health or other needs, some birth control options may be better than others for you in your 40s and 50s. Plus, new ones may be in the works. \u201cIt\u2019s always good to re-evaluate because there are always new developments that come on the scene,\u201d says Dr. Minkin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a new vaginal ring called<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-new-vaginal-ring-one-year-birth-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annovera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2018. Unlike<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nuvaring\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NuvaRing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the other vaginal ring on the market, it can be used for an entire year.
