Defined as a mental illness with a manic-depressive pattern, those with the disorder can experience \u201chighs\u201d that last days, followed by major depressive episodes that can last weeks. If you\u2019ve been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, you\u2019re not alone. These statistics reveal the prevalence of the mental health disorder, how it affects one\u2019s overall health, and the success rate of treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-bipolar-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is bipolar disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/bipolar-disorder\/index.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formerly known as manic depression, is a mood disorder that causes radical shifts in mood, energy, and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. People with bipolar disorder experience periods of intense emotions and changes in behavior called \u201cmood episodes,\u201d which can last days to weeks. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/bipolar-disorder\/diagnosis-treatment\/drc-20355961\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder can be difficult to diagnose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since some symptoms are similar to other mental health conditions, like schizophrenia and anxiety disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depressive episodes have symptoms of a depressive disorder, causing a person to feel a strong sense of sadness with low energy and motivation. Manic episodes are the opposite\u2014one can feel energetic, optimistic, and even euphoric. The symptoms of mania<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can lead to irrational, impulsive decision-making. Patients can also experience visualizations. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The type and intensity of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bipolar-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vary from person to person. Given the variation in the bipolar experience, it is challenging to make an accurate diagnosis, and individuals can go misdiagnosed for years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three primary types of bipolar disorders are bipolar I disorder, bipolar II disorder, and cyclothymic (or rapid cycling) disorder. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.annahindell.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anna Hindell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LCSW-R, a psychotherapist based in New York, explains the difference between each type of bipolar disorder.<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bipolar I: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Characterized by episodes of mania that last at least seven days and may require hospitalization. Depressive symptoms that follow can last up to two weeks, but a major depressive episode is not required for diagnosis. If these symptoms happen simultaneously, it\u2019s called a mixed episode.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bipolar II: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defined by a pattern of depressive and hypomanic episodes. Hypomania is a mood state characterized by increased energy, agitation, and pressured speech. The mania is not as intense as bipolar 1, but the depressive episodes are severe and may last longer.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cyclothymic disorder: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More frequent shifts between mood swings, which is called rapid cycling. The highs are consistent with hypomania symptoms, and the lows are mild to moderate depression. \u201cWith cyclothymia, the ups and downs are more frequent, and these swings can last for a longer period of time, diagnostically two years,\u201d says Hindell.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen they are in the manic stage, being around them can be rather exhausting,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/darienwellness.com\/david-ezell-m-a-m-s-l-p-c-l-m-h-c\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> David Ezell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LMHC, the CEO and founder of Darien Wellness. \u201cThey tend to have endless energy, set a vast number of goals, and have beliefs about themselves that aren\u2019t true or are even impossible for humans to achieve.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cConversely, when they are experiencing the depressive side of their mood, they essentially become the opposite with regard to mood. They don\u2019t want to do anything, they tend to disengage from people and become fairly lifeless. As a result, people withdraw from them,\u201d says Ezell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/bipolar-1-vs-2\/\"><b>Bipolar I disorder vs. bipolar II disorder<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-many-people-are-affected-by-bipolar-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many people are affected by bipolar disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, nearly 54 million people around the world have bipolar disorder. (Journal of Affective Disorders, 2025)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globally, the estimated lifetime prevalence of bipolar disorder ranges from 1.5% to 2.5% (New England Journal of Medicine, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S. population, the combined prevalence of primary bipolar disorders is estimated at 4.4% (JAMA, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The phrase severe mental illness (SMI) is often applied to those diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia, of all mental health conditions, as these diagnoses are often so debilitating that individuals\u2019 ability to engage in functional and occupational activities is impaired (Public Health England, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"bipolar-statistics-by-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar statistics by age<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age of onset peaks around age 15, with a median onset at approximately 20 years (JAMA, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greater than 70% of individuals will exhibit clinical characteristics before age 25 years (Lancet, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People 70 and older had the lowest rates of bipolar disorder (0.45%) (IHME, Global Burden of Disease (2024) \u2013 with major processing by Our World in Data)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescents experience a low prevalence of bipolar disorder, which in part may have to do with the diagnostic complexity, which requires consideration of developmental factors and symptom overlap with other mental health disorders, like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (Child and Adolescent Mental Health)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"bipolar-statistics-by-sex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar statistics by sex<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worldwide, approximately 48% of people with bipolar disorder are male, and 52% are female (International Bipolar Foundation)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Mental Health Surveys reveal that the lifetime prevalence is 2.5% in men and 2.3% in women (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JAMA<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar I is seen more often in men than women, while Bipolar II is seen more often in women than in men (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Pharmacology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men tend to experience their first bipolar disorder episode at a younger age than women (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Journal of Psychiatry,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2005)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are more likely to present with mania than women, and women are more likely to present with depression (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Health<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2011)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are more likely to have rapid cycling and seasonal episodes, as well as other concomitant mental health conditions\u2014like panic disorders and eating disorders (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Pharmacology, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men are reported to have more conduct and substance use disorders than women (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Pharmacology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men and women appear to experience similar rates of delusions and hallucinations (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Journal of Pharmacology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"bipolar-disorder-and-overall-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bipolar disorder and overall health<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On average, bipolar disorder results in a 9.2-year reduction in expected life span (National Institute of Mental Health, 2017).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is an increased risk of suicide in people with bipolar disorder, with 15% to 17% committing suicide. (Treatment Advocacy Center)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individuals with bipolar I disorder have a significantly increased lifetime risk of a concomitant substance abuse disorder (SUD) diagnosis (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British Journal of Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of those with bipolar disorder, many report comorbid medical conditions, which are most commonly migraine, asthma, and high cholesterol. Heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, and osteoarthritis were also identified as high probability co-occurring health problems. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The British Journal of Psychiatry, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"treating-bipolar-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating bipolar disorder\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, bipolar disorder is left untreated in half of the diagnosed individuals in any given year, and this is a leading cause of disability in those patients. Although there is no cure, Ezell says that the optimal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/bipolar-disorder-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatment plan for bipolar disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a combination of medication, like lithium and antidepressants, and mental health services like cognitive-behavioral therapy. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/bipolar-disorder\">There are many effective treatment options<\/a>, often combined with lifestyle changes and even support groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe medication allows the client to experience a more stable mood and see things more clearly,\u201d says Ezell. \u201cWhen they are able to have a more stable emotional experience, they are more open to starting and sticking with therapy. The therapy helps them understand their thoughts and begin to differentiate between accurate thoughts as opposed to thoughts that are generated by their condition.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce treated with medication, usually mood stabilizers, and perhaps an antidepressant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for bipolar type 2, people can be high functioning in the world,\u201d says Hindell. \u201cMany people with a bipolar diagnosis hold regular jobs, are parents, are successful, and live normal lives. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, medication is usually needed to control the mood dysregulation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychotherapy is needed to help gain insights into one&#8217;s patterns and moods, gaining <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">awareness of when one becomes symptomatic.\u201d Atypical antipsychotics may also be offered for bipolar disorder treatment, and patients must be advised on common side effects that may impair physical conditions, such as weight gain. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bipolar disorder is a confusing mental health condition not only for the affected individual\u2019s well-being, but also for their family members and loved ones, which can impact quality of life significantly.
