However, if you feel anxious when something isn\u2019t done just so or if you have to fight irrational or unwanted urges to repeat these tasks, you might find that these are symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/obsessive-compulsive-disorder-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, OCD affects an estimated 1.2% of adults in the United States. Below, we compiled the most recent and useful OCD statistics to illustrate its prevalence in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-obsessive-compulsive-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is obsessive-compulsive disorder?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD is a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic anxiety disorder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> characterized by a cycle of obsessive thoughts and compulsions. The NIMH defines obsessions as uncontrollable, recurring thoughts and compulsions as behaviors that a person feels the urge to repeat again and again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The current<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK519704\/table\/ch3.t13\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5)<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not formally categorize OCD into different types. However, some clinicians find it helpful to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/10.1176\/appi.ajp.2008.08020320\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">classify OCD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into one or more of four primary, but not mutually exclusive, types<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Contamination and cleaning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When obsession over germs and contamination leads to compulsive cleaning or handwashing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symmetry<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: When an obsession over symmetry and order leads to compulsive counting, reordering, and repetitive behaviors<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Forbidden thoughts<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: When intrusive thoughts about sex, violence, or religion lead to compulsive avoidance of triggering people and places or compulsively praying or seeking forgiveness and reassurance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Hoarding<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: When an obsession over acquiring or needing certain items leads to compulsive saving, even when the item has no value<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of the specific behavior, the cycle of OCD persists through an internal reward and punishment system, where compulsive behaviors are repeated to reduce anxiety caused by obsessions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/embracingyoutherapy.com\/dr-menije\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Menije Boduryan-Turner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PsyD, a psychologist based in California, explains that OCD greatly affects a person\u2019s life due to intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and uncertainty. OCD obsessions are intrusive and can be triggered at any time. Some people with OCD find it difficult to leave the house because ritualistic behavior in public can be embarrassing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is OCD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD is the fourth most common mental health disorder. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0010440X22000487\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comprehensive Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 1 in 40 U.S. adults have OCD now or will develop it at some point in their lifetimes. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18725912\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Molecular Psychology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2010)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prevalence of OCD in a 12-month period is higher in females (1.8%) than in males (0.5%). (National Institute of Mental Health)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"ocd-statistics-on-severity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD statistics on severity:<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics on OCD severity are based on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/sheehan-disability-scale\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sheehan Disability Scale<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a self-reported assessment of functional impairment in work, social, and family life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Half of adults with OCD (50.6%) reported serious impairment as of 2001-2003.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One-third of adults with OCD (34.8%) reported moderate impairment as of 2001-2003.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 15% of adults with OCD reported mild impairment as of 2001-2003.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcp.med.harvard.edu\/ncs\/index.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard Medical School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2005)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"ocd-statistics-by-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD statistics by age:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average age of onset of OCD is 19 years. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/9490-ocd-obsessive-compulsive-disorder\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cleveland Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with an early age of onset have more severe symptoms of OCD and higher rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23517651\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2014)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD has been shown to increase with age overall, and the biggest increase in prevalence with age is hoarding disorder. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5316500\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"ocd-statistics-worldwide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD statistics worldwide<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worldwide statistics on OCD are not widely reported, and several research reviews suggest that this disorder is underdiagnosed. However, OCD statistics show that the condition is diagnosed at similar rates in Europe and North America.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 12-month span, an estimated 1.2% of American adults are diagnosed with OCD compared to 0.1% to 2.3% of Europeans. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comprehensive Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2022)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"ocd-and-co-occurring-mental-health-conditions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OCD and co-occurring mental health conditions<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 2 in 3 adults with OCD have or have had at least one other mental health disorder. For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 50% of people with OCD also have major depressive disorder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 25% of people with OCD also have other anxiety disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A little more than 10% of people with OCD also have personality disorders.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/ocd\/about.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stanford Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"causes-of-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Causes of OCD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact cause of OCD is unknown, but a combination of genetic, environmental, and neurobiological factors contribute to its development, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/obsessivecompulsivedisorder.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAbnormalities in neurotransmitter systems\u2014chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and glutamate that send messages between brain cells\u2014are also involved in the disorder,\u201d Dr. Boduryan-Turner says. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5904107\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that low serotonin synthesis capacity may contribute to OCD, but more studies are needed to fully understand the neurotransmitter\u2019s role in the disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-ocd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating OCD<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/learn-from-us\/from-the-experts\/blog-posts\/consumer\/dont-wait-17-years-get-help-ocd#:~:text=Folks%20with%20OCD%20see%2014,and%20getting%20a%20correct%20diagnosis.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety and Depression Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reports that it takes 14\u201317 years, on average, to get a proper OCD diagnosis after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ocd-symptoms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptom onset<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This might be because it takes years for people to recognize their OCD symptoms and seek help. Getting a proper diagnosis is key because though OCD cannot be cured, it can be managed effectively with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ocd-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication and psychotherapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/lexapro-vs-prozac\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prozac (fluoxetine) and Lexapro (escitalopram)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are commonly prescribed to people with OCD. It\u2019s important to be patient and take these medications every day as prescribed, as it can take three to six months before maximum benefit is achieved, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychiatry.ufl.edu\/patient-care-services\/uf-ocd-anxiety-related-disorders-treatment-program\/medications-for-ocd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Florida College of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (UFCM). Fortunately, most people notice some benefits sooner\u2014within eight to 12 weeks, per UFCM. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5596392\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that discontinuing an antidepressant presents a risk of OCD relapse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is also commonly used to help people with OCD manage their anxiety and control their compulsions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6343408\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that exposure and response prevention (ERP), a part of CBT, is a highly effective treatment for OCD. In ERP, patients are exposed to their triggers (such as dirt) in a slow, controlled manner. Dr. Boduryan-Turner explains that ERP teaches the brain how to respond differently to obsessions by tolerating the anxiety and discomfort that come with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to medication and psychotherapy, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/applications.emro.who.int\/docs\/WHOEMMNH232E-eng.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO) recommends relaxation techniques (meditation and yoga, for instance) and support groups for people living with OCD.
