Have I been exposed? There are currently two ways to determine if you caught the virus: diagnostic testing and antibody testing. A diagnostic test tells you if you currently have the infection. Antibody testing reveals if you were previously exposed and developed antibodies. Continue reading to find out everything you need to know about COVID-19 antibody testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"coronavirus-antibody-test\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is a coronavirus antibody test?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-test\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diagnostic test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> determines if you currently have COVID-19. The sample is obtained using a nasal swab or saliva sample. The coronavirus test looks for active viral infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A coronavirus antibody test (also called serology testing) can tell you if you have been exposed to COVID-19. It looks for different types of antibodies that your immune system makes when it encounters the virus. Some antibody tests look for IgG antibodies; others look for both IgG and IgM antibodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IgM antibodies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When IgM antibodies are present, they can indicate an active or recent infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>IgG antibodies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> IgG antibodies develop later, about seven to 21 days after infection. The presence of IgG antibodies in your lab work can indicate a past infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s important to note that a positive antibody test doesn\u2019t mean that you can\u2019t spread the virus to others, or catch it again<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may still be contagious, especially if IgM antibodies are also present. Having the antibodies does not necessarily mean that you are immune to infection. It\u2019s unknown how long the antibodies last in your system, and scientists are still studying this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is the antibody test important?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If the test shows that you have IgG antibodies, you <\/b><b><i>may<\/i><\/b><b> have some immunity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It indicates that you were likely infected with or exposed to COVID-19. However,\u00a0 infectious disease experts don\u2019t know yet if having antibodies means that you are protected against reinfection with COVID-19 in the future. Researchers are still studying this.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>If you have recovered from COVID-19<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>you may be eligible to donate plasma<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can treat patients who are very ill and help them fight the infection. This plasma is called convalescent plasma and it is being studied in trials. You can find out more about donating plasma <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/coronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\/donate-covid-19-plasma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Results of antibody testing will provide public health officials and researchers with more information about the prevalence of COVID-19<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, immunity, community spread, and other factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"who-gets-tested\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should be tested for the coronavirus?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should get a COVID-19 <\/span><b>antibody test<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You think you have been exposed to COVID-19.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and are fully recovered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You previously had symptoms of COVID-19 but were not tested (perhaps due to lack of widespread testing at the time).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><b>currently<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-and-incubation-period\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you should contact your healthcare provider about a diagnostic test, not an antibody test. An antibody test will not tell you if you currently have COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-get-tested\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to get a COVID-19 antibody test<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC, antibody tests are currently available through healthcare providers and laboratories. Contact your healthcare provider to see if testing is offered. You can also go online at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/questdirect.questdiagnostics.com\/products\/covid-19-immune-response\/b580e541-78a5-48a6-b17b-7bad949dcb57?utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=71700000066217190&amp;utm_content=58700005845625577&amp;utm_term=p53388864531&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwn7j2BRDrARIsAHJkxmzSf4NzSgFZD6Lr7o9NFuz3VwyQU636qcilZ3A5V2nxMlEn2wzsVjMaAuX-EALw_wcB&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quest Diagnostics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.labcorp.com\/antibody-testing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LabCorp<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and follow the steps to have a doctor order an antibody test, which you will take at a participating lab.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The antibody test is a simple blood test. The blood sample will then be tested for the presence of antibodies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are no antibody tests that use a home collection. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonxscan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scanwell Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Lemonaid Health are developing an at-home antibody test that might soon be available.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/at-home-coronavirus-tests\/\"><b>Compare COVID-19 at-home test kits<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"test-results\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can I trust the COVID-19 antibody test results?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a lot of talk about false test results and the accuracy of the antibody test results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">False positives<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have been diagnosed with or were exposed to another type of coronavirus, you may get a false-positive result. Or, if you test too soon after recovering from the virus, you may not have enough IgG antibodies to be detected and get a false negative result.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accuracy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the COVID-19 testing kits currently available have been authorized under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u2019s (FDA) EUA, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/emergency-preparedness-and-response\/mcm-legal-regulatory-and-policy-framework\/emergency-use-authorization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency use authorization program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The EUA allows unapproved medical products (or unapproved uses of already approved medical products) to be used in an emergency for the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of life-threatening diseases or conditions when there are no adequate, accepted, and available alternatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that doesn\u2019t mean that the companies aren\u2019t being held accountable. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/fda-voices\/insight-fdas-revised-policy-antibody-tests-prioritizing-access-and-accuracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is taking steps to ensure that more testing is available and that the coronavirus and antibodies tests are accurate, by collecting validation data and ensuring tests meet specific recommendations for specificity and sensitivity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do my antibody test results mean?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC outlines actionable steps for people who receive either a positive or negative test results <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/testing\/serology-overview.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. No matter what your results show, you should still follow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/prevention.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these measures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as frequent handwashing, wearing a mask, and avoiding close contact, to protect yourself and others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A positive test result doesn\u2019t necessarily mean that you\u2019re immune to COVID-19, or that you can go back to work. You may need a negative diagnostic test for an active COVID-19 infection first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you aren\u2019t experiencing any symptoms, ask your healthcare provider if it is okay to go back to work, taking all the appropriate precautions (wearing a mask, social distancing, etc.).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are currently having symptoms, a negative antibody result may be from a current COVID-19 infection, and you will need a follow-up test.
