Many different factors can contribute to a person\u2019s depressive state, and depression is often an overlapping diagnosis along with other medical conditions and mental health disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is depression?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most prominent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/symptoms-of-depression-and-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms of major depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a severe and persistent low mood, profound sadness, and a sense of despair. A major depressive episode (MDE) is a period of time characterized by symptoms of major depression. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defines a major depressive episode as experiencing a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities, accompanied by problems with sleeping, eating, energy, concentration, or self-worth for two weeks or longer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSudden losses or changes can exacerbate pre-existing symptoms of depression or anxiety,\u201d says Yesel Yoon, PhD, a psychologist in New York City. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of such triggers include the death of a loved one, a breakup, job loss, financial stress, a medical condition, and substance use disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDepression affects people by changing their level of functioning in many areas of their life,\u201d says Dr. Yoon. \u201cNamely, people\u2019s sleep, appetite, concentration, mood, energy level, physical health, and social lives can change dramatically due to the symptoms of depression. Often, people who struggle with depression will describe having difficulty getting out of bed, having little to no motivation or energy to do the things they typically do, and feeling irritable or very sad. All of these different things certainly make living life much harder<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is depression?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 280 million people live with depression worldwide. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression and other mental health disorders are among the main causes of disability around the world. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-62381-9\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientific Reports<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression accounts for 4.3% of the global disease burden. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/understanding-anxiety\/depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety &amp; Depression Association of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 14.5 million U.S. adults experienced at least one major depressive episode that caused severe impairment in 2021. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nimh.nih.gov\/health\/statistics\/major-depression\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute of Mental Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young adults ages 18\u201325 years have the highest prevalence of major depressive episodes in the United States. (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, major depressive episodes are more likely to impact females (10.3%) than males (6.2%). (National Institute of Mental Health, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"depression-statistics-by-age\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression statistics by age<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, 19.5% of adolescents ages 12\u201317 years had a major depressive episode in 2022, and 14.5% of this population had a major depressive episode with severe impairment. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt42731\/2022-nsduh-nnr.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rates of major depressive episodes were highest in young adults ages 18\u201325 years (20.1%) in 2022, whereas people ages 50 years and older had the lowest rates of major depressive episodes (4.6%) (SAMHSA, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15.9 million adults had a major depressive episode with severe impairment in 2022. (SAMHSA, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rates of depression and suicidal ideation have reached an all-time high among college students, with 44% of students reporting depression symptoms and 15% reporting suicidal thoughts in the 2021-2022 academic year. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sph.umich.edu\/news\/2023posts\/college-students-anxiety-depression-higher-than-ever-but-so-are-efforts-to-receive-care.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Michigan School of Public Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rates of depression among U.S. adults of all ages have been rising. In 2023, 29% of adults reported receiving a depression diagnosis at some time during their lives, compared with 19.6% in 2015. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/505745\/depression-rates-reach-new-highs.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"postpartum-depression-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum depression statistics<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum depression is depression suffered by a parent who has recently given birth, typically occurring within <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/ency\/article\/007215.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three months to a year after childbirth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This may be due to hormonal changes, changes in lifestyle, and parenthood fatigue.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 76% of women experience the \u201cbaby blues,\u201d characterized by low mood or mild depression after childbirth. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK519070\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">StatPearls<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paternal postpartum depression impacts 8% to 13% of new fathers and jumps to 50% when the mother also has postpartum depression. Some develop depressive symptoms during these months.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress levels reportedly increase during the holiday season for 41% of U.S. adults. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/news\/press\/releases\/2023\/11\/holiday-season-stress\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most (89%) of U.S. adults report that the holidays trigger stress about money, missed loved ones, and the anticipation of conflicts among family members. (American Psychological Association, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 43% of U.S. adults say that stress makes it difficult to enjoy the holidays, and 36% report feeling like the holidays resemble a competition. (SAMHSA, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adolescents ages 12\u201317 years had the lowest treatment rate (56.8%) after a major depressive episode in 2022. (SAMHSA, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressant use is rising, particularly among young people. The rate of antidepressant use among people ages 12\u201325 years increased by 66.3% between 2016 and 2022. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/153\/3\/e2023064245\/196655\/Antidepressant-Dispensing-to-US-Adolescents-and\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pediatrics<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are about twice as likely to take antidepressants than men. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db377.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2020)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depression is highly treatable, and the earlier you treat it, the better.
