It\u2019s vital for maintaining fertility <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">having healthy offspring.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall health is pivotal for male reproductive function,\u201d comments <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/profiles\/natan-bar-chama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natan Bar-Charma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, president of the Society for Male Reproduction and Urology. \u201cLifestyle choices can directly impact sperm quality and the well-being of one\u2019s offspring.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll give your children the healthiest start in life if you get your own health on track, before having a baby. These are must-dos for fathers-to-be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can men do to increase chances of conception?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re considering starting a family, begin with an appointment with your healthcare provider. Together you can determine the best male preconception plan to increase the chances of conception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since 50% of infertility cases contain a malefactor, men should undergo preconception screening,\u201d notes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsd.edu\/tung-chin.hsieh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tung-Chin Hsieh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, assistant clinical professor of urology at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. \u201cUnfortunately, most reproductive age men don&#8217;t see physicians regularly, and many preventable diseases are missed. In general, screening can be done by a primary care physician. If a fertility problem is identified, you should be referred to a men&#8217;s health\/reproductive urologist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, your men\u2019s preconception health screening will include the following steps.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Get screened for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infections (such as STDs) can block or scar sperm ducts, and that can impact fertility. Many STDs, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/gonorrhea-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gonorrhea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, often are present without noticeable symptoms. Asymptomatic infections are why screening tests are so important. Screening helps uncover hidden conditions that impact fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Discuss your health history.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share any diseases or conditions with your healthcare provider. Type 1 diabetes, for instance, can affect your sperm count. History of childhood undescended testes can cause future infertility. Ditto if you had the mumps after puberty (rarely it causes infertility, but it can cause \u201csubfertility\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Familiarize yourself with your family history before your appointment then discuss it with your physician. While your family\u2019s genetic makeup or your sister\u2019s health may not seem important for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> baby, conditions can run in families. Your doctor may refer you for genetic counseling or order appropriate tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Review the medications you take.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medications, prescription or over-the-counter (OTC), can impact fertility. A variety of drugs\u2014including medications used to treat <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-for-anxiety-and-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression and anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ways-to-manage-high-blood-pressure-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/antifungals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fungal infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/hair-loss-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hair loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other conditions\u2014can alter sperm count and the sperm\u2019s ability to fertilize an egg. Your physician can suggest alternative medications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Ask about vitamins.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some vitamins are good for your testicles and sperm production, according to research published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5508432\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Journal of Urology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin C<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vitamin-e\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vitamin E<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zinc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zinc<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/coenzyme-q10\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coenzyme Q10<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/selenium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selenium<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lycopene\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lycopene<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/folic-acid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folic acid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a common ingredient in prenatal vitamins for women, but can have beneficial effects for men, too\u2014improving sperm count and decreasing risk of birth defects. Adding these vitamins may help to make sperm stronger for pregnancy naturally. Just be sure to use men\u2019s preconception health vitamins with caution, if at all. And always talk to your doctor first. It is best to get your vitamins and nutrients from food, so try a healthier diet first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can men take prenatal vitamins? \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many OTC male fertility supplements actually contain hormones that can negatively impact a man&#8217;s sperm count,\u201d Dr. Hsieh says. \u201cI tell my patients to not waste money on fancy fertility vitamins. Several of these supplements may contain testosterone, which can increase the risk of heart disease and blood clots. A once-a-day multivitamin is enough.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (You can save on thousands of drugs, including these fertility vitamins for men, with your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/browse-prescriptions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare card<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Review potential lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to permanently give up cigar-filled poker nights or forever forego a grilled T-bone in favor of saut\u00e9ed tofu. But practice moderation now\u2014to optimize your health, so you and your partner have the best chance at a healthy pregnancy later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is especially important if you have some strikes working against you in the fertility department (like advanced age). One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/news\/older-fathers-put-health-partners-unborn-children-risk-rutgers-study-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Rutgers University found that men older than 45 had poorer sperm quality, which can lead to a host of problems, like reduced fertility and the risk of fathering children born prematurely and with birth defects like heart problems and a cleft palate (an opening\/split in the roof of the mouth and lip).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/infertility-statistics\/\"><b>Infertility Statistics<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/infertility-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Infertility Treatments<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can men do to increase fertility?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following steps can help to improve fertility.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain a healthy weight.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overweight men are 11% more likely than normal weight men to have a low sperm count and 39% more likely to have no sperm in their ejaculate, according to research from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/hsph-in-the-news\/excess-weight-sperm-fertility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harvard School of Public Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For obese men, the numbers are 42% and 81%, respectively. Obesity is linked to reduced testosterone production, which can also lead to hypogonadism, erectile dysfunction, and decreased libido.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excess weight contributes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4408383\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that damage sperm. Thus, it is important to be mindful about nutrition and be mindful of a healthy pre-pregnancy diet when trying to conceive. Consider investigating the Mediterranean diet (rich in fish, olive oil, nuts, vegetables, beans, and whole grains). In addition to promoting weight loss, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-019-39826-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows it can boost sperm quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mediterranean diet also features fewer dairy products than other diets, which may be another reason to try it during preconception. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/23670169\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed a correlation between high-fat dairy products and decreased sperm motility and abnormal sperm shape.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quit smoking.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men who smoke cigarettes have lower sperm counts, sperm with less motility, and overall lower sperm volume than men who don\u2019t smoke, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4639396\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postgraduate Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journal. That goes for anything you smoke\u2014not just tobacco. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/30916627\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that marijuana can have similar detrimental effects on sperm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chill.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important\u2014both figuratively and literally. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological stress can affect sperm, so mental health is important,\u201d says Philip Cheng, MD, a urologist with RMA, a leading fertility clinic in the U.S. \u201cI also recommend that men [who are] actively trying to conceive to avoid activities that increase the temperature of the testes, such as hot tubs, saunas, seat warmers, laptops sitting on the lap, and even tight-fitting underwear.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skip the booze.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/2047487319874530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looking at the drinking patterns of both moms- and dads-to-be in the three months prior to conception (as well as in the first trimester of pregnancy for women) found a strong association between any alcohol use and an increased likelihood of having a baby born with structural heart defects. The risk of heart defects increased as the drinking amount increased. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this reason, it might be wise to abstain from alcohol for at least three months prior to trying to get pregnant,\u201d says Dr. Cheng.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t forget to emotionally support your partner.
