When your body doesn\u2019t produce enough, you might hear it referred to as low T, testosterone deficiency, or<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/15603-low-testosterone-male-hypogonadism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">male hypogonadism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Whatever your doctor calls it, low testosterone levels can make you feel tired, cranky, or uninterested in sex\u2014along with other possible symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But you don\u2019t have to just sigh and accept it.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would urge men to discuss bothersome symptoms and complaints with their [healthcare providers],\u201d says urologist Jay Newmark, MD, chief medical officer of Clarus Therapeutics. \u201cWhether or not they are related to testosterone levels, there may be a remedy available that will improve his overall quality of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens when a man\u2019s testosterone is low?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be wondering how you would know if your testosterone levels are lower than they should be. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urologyhealth.org\/urologic-conditions\/low-testosterone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Urological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AUA), some of the most common symptoms of low testosterone include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low sexual desire<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased energy levels<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-tests-and-diagnosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced muscle mass<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of body hair<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re having any symptoms, see a doctor about getting your levels checked,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/drtracygapin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tracy Gapin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">board-certified urologist and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">founder of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smart Men&#8217;s Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s a good idea because low T can be confused for other medical conditions, according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drleonissola.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leo Nissola<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a member of the clinical development team at The Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. \u201cPatients that suffer from low testosterone production may be wrongly diagnosed with depression since some of the symptoms overlap, such as the lack of interest in sexual activity and lack of energy,\u201d Dr. Nissola says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-doctor\/\"><b>How to find an erectile dysfunction doctor<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s a normal range of testosterone?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re experiencing symptoms of low T and can\u2019t figure out another reason for them, your doctor might suggest a serum testosterone test, which is a blood test that will measure the amount of testosterone in your blood.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNormal\u201d levels of testosterone for a healthy adult male without any issues affecting his testosterone production range<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4255853\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 350 nanograms per deciliter and 750 ng\/dL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. According to the American Urological Association (AUA), the cutoff is the 300 ng\/dL line\u2014that is, men who have testosterone levels that fall below 300 ng\/dL could experience potential benefits from treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to correctly make a low T diagnosis, it is important to check the testosterone levels correctly i.e., between 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. after an overnight fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the main cause of low testosterone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest causes of low T is age. Usually a man\u2019s testosterone levels peak during his late teens or early 20s, then gradually drop after that. However, low T is not a foregone conclusion for all men after a certain birthday. Many older men never experience a drop that\u2019s significant enough to cause any symptoms. (The AUA estimates that about 2.1% of men may have a testosterone deficiency.)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, many experts note that age alone may not be responsible\u00ad; some of the health conditions that men are more likely to acquire as they age may contribute to a decline in testosterone production, such as diabetes and obesity.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are other factors that can cause your testosterone levels to drop:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep apnea\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injury to the testes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dysfunction of the pituitary gland<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemotherapy or radiation treatment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genetic conditions like Klinefelter syndrome<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some medications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV\/AIDS<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some evidence suggesting certain foods can contribute to low T levels, such as: soy products, alcohol, mint, licorice, flaxseeds, and certain processed foods that are high in trans-fats or sugars. More research is needed, but it can\u2019t hurt to try to eliminate some of these from your diet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low T treatment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When untreated, low testosterone can lead to a decline in the quality of life or low bone density. Fortunately, testosterone therapy and natural treatments are available and help many men counteract the effects of their low testosterone levels and return to normal sexual function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important to discuss the different options with your healthcare provider,\u201d says Dr. Newmark.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/testosterone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone products<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Topical gels:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can apply testosterone gel, such as Androgel, to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/18661-testosterone-skin-gel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your shoulder or your upper arm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the same time each day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Creams:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can also apply a<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/andr.12357\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone-containing cream to the skin of the scrotum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Nasal gels:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The amount and number of times you need to use<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements\/testosterone-nasal-route\/side-effects\/drg-20110174?p=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this gel<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> varies. Many men need to put this testosterone gel in their nostrils three times a day to boost their testosterone levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Patches:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Apply this<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a601118.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transdermal patch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> once a day, varying the locations each day.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Injections: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a614041.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inject a testosterone solution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> under your skin (subcutaneous) or into your muscle (intramuscular).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Pellets:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The pellets, which are surgically implanted under your skin, release testosterone into your body over the course of several months. One drawback: You can\u2019t adjust the levels once they\u2019ve been implanted until it\u2019s time to remove them, says Dr. Gapin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Oral treatments:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You can get a prescription for an oral capsule,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-new-oral-testosterone-capsule-treatment-men-certain-forms-hypogonadism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if appropriate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or a small patch that you put on your gum above one of your canine teeth.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many men do just fine with one of these treatments. But it\u2019s important to note: Testosterone therapy isn\u2019t for everyone. These treatments can have side effects ranging from acne to breast enlargement to mood swings.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, it can have other, potentially serious downsides. Testosterone treatments can interfere with other medications that you may be taking.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reproductivefacts.org\/news-and-publications\/patient-fact-sheets-and-booklets\/documents\/fact-sheets-and-info-booklets\/testosterone-use-and-male-infertility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testosterone therapy can lead to infertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which, although it\u2019s usually temporary in a majority of the cases, may be a dealbreaker for some men, especially younger men. And there can be increased risks from long-term use, too. For example, particularly in people over 65 years of age, long-term testosterone therapy has been linked to an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mens-health\/is-testosterone-therapy-safe-take-a-breath-before-you-take-the-plunge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in cardiovascular disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or heart attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Newmark notes that men with an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-finasteride\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enlarged prostate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who experience difficulty urinating may find that testosterone therapy makes their situation worse. \u201cTestosterone is the main driver for the growth of prostate cancer,\u201d adds Dr. Nissola. \u201cThat is why the testosterone replacement therapy [TRT] is not recommended for men with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/prostate-cancer-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prostate cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nodule on the prostate, or a PSA greater than three ng\/ML.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocrine Society recommends that if someone has sleep apnea, it should be treated prior to testosterone treatment. The society also recommends screening for sleep apnea in overweight people and those who snore at night.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Gapin often tells his patients to think beyond testosterone therapy. \u201cTestosterone therapy alone is not going to give you what you need,\u201d he says. \u201cWe need to focus on a whole-body comprehensive approach.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some areas of your health that you can work on improving that may help your testosterone levels:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Get more sleep.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cGood quality sleep,\u201d qualifies Dr. Gapin. \u201cStudies show that poor quality sleep can crush testosterone levels.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Reduce your stress levels.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you\u2019re chronically stressed, your body is producing a lot of the hormone called cortisol. \u201cThat crushes testosterone levels, too,\u201d says Dr. Gapin, who suggests that his patients consider a wide range of possibilities, including mindfulness meditation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Exercise regularly.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But don\u2019t just run or bike, says Dr. Gapin. Fit in some weight or strength training to build muscle mass and reduce body fat.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Eat a healthy diet.<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6266690\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some research suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that dialing back on the heavy, processed foods might be useful, while<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.auajournals.org\/doi\/10.1097\/JU.0000000000000482?PRID=JU_PR_01102020&amp;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has documented a decline in testosterone levels among men eating a low-fat diet. In general, though eating a healthy, well-balanced diet can help you maintain a healthy body weight.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehealthymd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Martinez, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also recommends that his patients reduce or avoid alcohol, since<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/arh25-4\/282-287.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that alcohol use can impair the body\u2019s production of testosterone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one wants to be diagnosed with low testosterone, but the good news is that most cases are treatable.
