{"id":11996,"date":"2020-06-04T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2020-06-04T13:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=11996"},"modified":"2020-09-15T16:29:12","modified_gmt":"2020-09-15T20:29:12","slug":"anxiety-in-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-in-men\/","title":{"rendered":"How to recognize and treat anxiety symptoms in men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might start with worries about work or ongoing financial problems and evolve into an endless loop of self-doubt.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/adaa.org\/about-adaa\/press-room\/facts-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affect 40 million adults in the United States\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/anxiety-statistics\/#anxiety-statistics-by-sex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14% of whom are men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While men and women both struggle with anxiety, men are often reluctant to talk about their feelings or to seek help.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress, explains Kelly Houseman, LLPC, a licensed mental health counselor in Michigan, but in some cases, it becomes all-consuming and negatively impacts our lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStress is our body&#8217;s response to daily activities that push us to get through a situation as best as we can,\u201d Houseman says. \u201cIt\u2019s that feeling you get when you have to get a project done under a strict deadline. Anxiety, on the other hand, is an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unrelenting<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nervousness or apprehension about a situation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety in men can take a toll on health and relationships. The good news is a doctor or therapist can help\u2014through talk therapy, teaching relaxation and coping techniques, and in some cases, medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety symptoms in men<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While men and women respond to anxiety in many of the same ways, Julie Levin, MA, MFT, a marriage and family therapist in California, says anxiety symptoms in men can look a little different. She attributes this in part to the stigma surrounding anxiety and how many men have been raised to view emotional vulnerability as a weakness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Levin says physical<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpguide.org\/articles\/anxiety\/anxiety-disorders-and-anxiety-attacks.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pounding heart<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleeplessness and fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn addition, men who experience anxiety often come across as irritable or have outbursts of anger,\u201d Levin says. \u201cThey can also manage their symptoms differently, turning to alcohol to reduce their anxiety, or spending more time online, playing games, or watching porn.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem, Levin says, is that attempting to bury anxiety, instead of managing it, only makes the problem worse. \u201cIt\u2019s important for men to seek help for anxiety, the sooner, the better,\u201d Levin says. \u201cAnxiety is a medical condition, not a weakness\u2014and with the right treatment, most men can overcome anxiety.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of anxiety disorders<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/answers\/mental-health-and-substance-abuse\/what-are-the-five-major-types-of-anxiety-disorders\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identifies five major types of anxiety disorders:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anxiety-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A disorder characterized by chronic anxiety, worry, or tension, even when there is nothing to provoke it<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ocd-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anxiety caused by recurrent unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and\/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/anxiety-attack-vs-panic-attack\/\"><b>Panic disorder<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unexpected and repeated episodes of fear experienced as attacks that include symptoms such as shortness of breath, abdominal distress, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/ptsd-treatment-and-medications\/\"><b>Post-traumatic stress disorder<\/b><\/a><b>:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An anxiety disorder that can occur after a traumatic incident (military combat, accidents, unpleasant life event, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Social anxiety disorder (SAD):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> overwhelming anxiety and extreme self-consciousness in social situations, leading to avoidance of social situations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety often occurs along with other mental health conditions. \u201cDepression and anxiety are identical cousins,\u201d Levin says. \u201cAnxiety disorders are often linked to depression, and it\u2019s not uncommon for men to be diagnosed with both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes male anxiety?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While anxiety can be caused by ongoing stress about work, family, relationships, or traumatic life experiences, it can also be the result of medical conditions including heart disease, diabetes, or a decline in hormone levels. For example, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4610613\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low testosterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can increase anxiety levels, and contributes to an increase in the stress hormone, cortisol, which drives anxious feelings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can men get an accurate diagnosis of anxiety?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no simple test to definitively diagnose anxiety in men. A qualified healthcare professional can rule out medical causes for symptoms and recommend a mental health specialist, like a therapist or psychiatrist, who can help to diagnose and manage symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for anxiety in men<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since anxiety is curable, no one should suffer alone in silence. \u201cIf anxiety is starting to affect your quality of life and taking away enjoyment from things you used to enjoy or stopping you from making plans for the future, it may be time to talk to someone,\u201d Houseman says. A physician or therapist can work with you to offer solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lifestyle changes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can anxiety go away naturally? While lifestyle changes may not cure anxiety, they can help manage symptoms. \u201cStrategies to manage anxiety include regular exercise, breathing exercises, working on getting more sleep, and talking about what is bothering you to a trusted friend or professional,\u201d Houseman says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most natural remedies for anxiety involve taking care of your body to improve your mental health. They can also include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating a healthy, well-balanced diet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meditating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding triggers like cigarettes, alcohol, or caffeine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing to express anxious feelings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking supplements, like cannabidiol\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While their benefit is unproven, many people with anxiety swear by the benefits of aromatherapy, acupuncture, and spending time with animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therapy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCertain types of therapy work very effectively,\u201d says Houseman. Depending on the type of anxiety disorder you\u2019re diagnosed with, some therapies may be more effective than others. There are a few types that can be effective for anxiety in men:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive behavioral therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure therapy<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany men are afraid of what therapy looks like, or worry about being judged,\u201d Houseman says, \u201cbut are pleasantly surprised at how cathartic even one session can feel and the emotional weight that can be lifted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMedication can certainly have a place in treatment and is a very personal decision that men should discuss with their doctor or therapist,\u201d says Houseman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If declines in testosterone are causing your feelings of anxiety, it may improve with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methyltestosterone\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testosterone replacement therapy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TRT). Before prescribing TRT, a doctor will test your hormone levels to determine if there is a testosterone deficiency. If you are deemed a good candidate for TRT, your doctor may prescribe a topical gel, cream, injection, or patch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your tests come back showing testosterone levels in the normal range, your doctor may suggest medication. The main types of medication used to treat anxiety include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benzodiazepines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buspirone<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best solution may be a combination of all three treatment types. \u201cFor some people, a prescription for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medication-for-anxiety-and-depression\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offers immediate benefits, while they also attend talk therapy to get to the root of their anxiety,\u201d Levin says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It might start with worries about work or ongoing financial problems and evolve into an endless loop of self-doubt.
