{"id":12081,"date":"2020-06-19T10:00:13","date_gmt":"2020-06-19T14:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/?p=12081"},"modified":"2020-11-12T09:46:06","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T14:46:06","slug":"blood-thinners-and-alcohol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-thinners-and-alcohol\/","title":{"rendered":"Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking blood thinners?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are taking an anticoagulant, otherwise known as a blood thinner\u2014for stroke prevention, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-thinners-for-afib\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atrial fibrillation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or one of the numerous other medical conditions that, by nature, can cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/dvt\/facts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014you are probably aware of the fact that these medications increase your risk of bleeding. What else thins your blood and increases your risk of bleeding? After all, there are numerous blood thinners on the market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, no\u2014it doesn\u2019t matter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anticoagulant you take. The warning applies to the entire class of drugs, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/coumadin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coumadin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/health-topics\/arrhythmia\/prevention--treatment-of-arrhythmia\/a-patients-guide-to-taking-warfarin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many patients take warfarin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the generic version)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/eliquis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliquis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (apixaban)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lovenox\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lovenox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (enoxaparin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xarelto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xarelto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (rivaroxaban)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pradaxa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pradaxa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (dabigatran)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/savaysa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Savaysa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (edoxaban)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/arixtra\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arixtra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fondaparinux)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that said, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eliquis.bmscustomerconnect.com\/vte\/clinical-trials\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have demonstrated that the bleeding risk associated with newer anticoagulant agents, like Eliquis, is less severe than the risk associated with others, such as Coumadin, says Dr. Alvarado. (Eliquis received <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2014\/202155s006lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FDA approval in 2012<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/eliquis-generic-apixaban\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generic counterparts were approved late last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, that doesn\u2019t give the Eliquis and alcohol combo a pass\u2014it is still dangerous, Beckner and Dr. Alvarado emphasize (as are all the others).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Side effects of mixing alcohol and blood thinners\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you are drinking or not (hopefully not, for your safety) while taking anticoagulants, be on the lookout for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiosmart.org\/healthwise\/tx20\/20\/tx2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of abnormal bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Seek medical attention if you experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nose bleeds, especially uncontrollable ones<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upper GI bleeds, indicated by dark\/tarry stool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lower GI bleeds, indicated by bright red blood in the stool<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuts and scrapes that won\u2019t stop bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding gums<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive\/unusual bruising<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache, dizziness, or confusion after a fall (especially if you hit your head)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In some cases\u2014if you experience bleeding gums or bruising, for example\u2014you can simply call your doctor. Other times, an immediate trip to the ER or a call to 911 is imperative, says Dr. Alvarado, because some bleeding episodes can be life-threatening.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a patient fell and hit their head, they could be experiencing intracranial bleeding and not even realize it,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd by the time they are like \u2018I don\u2019t feel right,\u2019 it might be [too late] to control it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>So, I can never drink again?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though Beckner and Dr. Alvarado strongly encourage their patients taking anticoagulants to abstain from alcohol altogether, they do agree that moderate, sporadic use <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">could<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be okay for certain individuals. But what exactly does \u201cmoderate\u201d mean? Well, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/alcohol-health\/overview-alcohol-consumption\/moderate-binge-drinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines it as one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that amount would be considered excessive and unsafe for a person taking a blood thinner. The key word here is sporadic. In other words, now and then on a special occasion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I had a patient who was like \u2018my daughter is getting married and I want to participate in a toast,\u2019 I would say it is probably alright if you have one glass,\u201d says Dr. Alvarado. \u201cBut I think it is important for patients who have even one glass to just be aware of the warning signs and to [know] what they are getting into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you are taking an anticoagulant, otherwise known as a blood thinner\u2014for stroke prevention, atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or one of the numerous other medical conditions that, by nature, can cause blood clots\u2014you are probably aware of the fact that these medications increase your risk of bleeding.
