The coronavirus pandemic has made 27% of people feel isolated, and 14% feel depressed according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-survey-americas-new-health-habits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SingleCare survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. On top of that, 10% are drinking more alcohol\u2014and some may be social distancing separately from their significant other to avoid COVID-19. That\u2019s not exactly a recipe for romantic fireworks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are many everyday factors that affect sexual function\u2014for men and women. Stress, alcohol consumption, and mental health conditions are obvious factors that can impact how easily you can \u201cget in the mood.\u201d What you may not realize is that the daily pill you take may also contribute to low libido. Over-the-counter treatments and prescriptions commonly affect sex drive. It\u2019s natural for desire to fluctuate day-to-day, or year-to-year. But, if you\u2019re <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> interested in intimacy anymore, it can mess with your self-esteem or cause problems in your relationship. If you think one of your medications could be impacting your sex life, start here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is low libido?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low libido is a decreased interest in sex, also known as diminished sex drive, impaired sexual function, or hypoactive sexual desire disorder. While it sometimes goes hand-in-hand with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/erectile-dysfunction-guide-symptoms-causes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for men, the two are not the same thing. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drleonissola.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leo Nissola, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, scientist and immunology author, says there is an important distinction between wanting to have sex (desire), and the physical excitement needed to have sex (driven by blood flow and physical arousal). Most often, medications impact the physical aspect of lost libido.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libido is a spectrum of feelings that vary person-to-person. It\u2019s normal to be more or less turned on at different points. Though if you\u2019ve completely lost interest in getting busy (or are much less interested in sexual activity than is normal for you), over an extended period of time it could be a sign of a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the symptoms of low libido?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/low-sex-drive-in-women\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20374554\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the symptoms of low libido include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loss of interest in any form of sexual activity\u2014with a partner or solo<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of sexual fantasies or thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling worried about your lack of sexual activity or thoughts<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t fit the exact definition, but are worried about the change in your sex drive, that\u2019s reason enough to talk to a healthcare provider about what could be causing it. What\u2019s considered low depends on the individual. There\u2019s no \u201cright\u201d amount of interest. If it\u2019s less than what\u2019s normal for you, it\u2019s worth taking steps to fix it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes low libido?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can seem like low libido comes out of the blue, without warning, in an otherwise happy relationship. Yet, there\u2019s usually an issue at the root of changes in sex drive, stemming from one of the following categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Medication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Certain medications can affect hormones that help regulate desire. Others make it more difficult to achieve an erection or become physically aroused.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Medical conditions:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Recent surgery or sexual problems (like pain during sex) can contribute to low libido, but disorders not related to sexual function can also influence libido. Some medical problems linked to low libido include restless leg syndrome, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, cancer, heart disease, stroke, and neurological disease.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Hormonal changes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Changes in testosterone levels or estrogen levels can impact sexual desire. It\u2019s common for men to develop low T as they age, and for women to experience spikes and dips in estrogen during pregnancy and menopause respectively. Hormone therapy can help to resolve certain hormonal problems.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Lifestyle causes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Drinking too much alcohol, smoking, or using illegal drugs can decrease sex drive. Too little sleep, not getting enough exercise, and eating an unhealthy diet have also been linked to sexual dysfunction. Exposure to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/niosh\/topics\/repro\/mensWorkplace.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certain chemicals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may contribute to low libido.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Psychological issues: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mental health conditions, like depression, can make it hard to find pleasure in things you once enjoyed\u2014including sex. Outside of an official diagnosis, stress, low self-esteem, poor body image, or a history of sexual abuse can affect libido.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Relationship problems:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Feeling emotionally close to your partner is key to physical intimacy. If you\u2019re having arguments, or lacking communication and trust in your partner, it\u2019s likely making you less interested in sex.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider can help you figure out what\u2019s causing your low libido\u2014usually with an exam and testing to rule out medical problems. Your primary care physician may refer to you a specialist, like a psychologist, if a mental health or relationship problem is the suspected culprit.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications that cause low libido<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dip in sexual interest coincided with a new medication, that could be a clue. Changing medications or discontinuing a treatment you don\u2019t need anymore could be an easy fix for problems in the bedroom.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications impact libido in two main ways according to Dr. Nissola. Certain drugs create physical symptoms that make it difficult to have sex or enjoy sex\u2014such as vaginal dryness or decreasing blood flow that makes it possible to sustain an erection\u2014which indirectly impacts libido. Others affect hormones that regulate your mood and desire for sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen it comes to medications, there are three categories of drugs known to have a negative effect on libido. Most of them have an effect because they impact the levels of three key hormones in the body: serotonin, prolactin, or testosterone,\u201d agrees Christine Traxler, MD, retired family practice physician, author of <em>I&#8217;m having a baby: What now?<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cThe three classifications you need to think of are neurologic or psychiatric drugs, heart or cardiovascular drugs, and a few miscellaneous drugs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAntidepressant medications are the most frequent medication induced cause of low libido and sexual dysfunction,\u201d says Stephanie Redmond, Pharm.D., CDE, BC-ADM, who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regularly consults with patients to review medications as a possible cause for sexual health concerns and is the co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/diabetesdoctor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diabetesdoctor.com<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following types of prescription medications are know to affect sex drive:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-anxiety medications based on benzodiazepines (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xanax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xanax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anticonvulsant medications (such as, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tegretol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tegretol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenytoin-sodium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenytoin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/phenobarbital\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phenobarbital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/side-effects-of-antidepressants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antidepressants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (including, anti-mania medications, antipsychotics, MAOIs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/sex-on-ssris\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SSRIs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bph-treatment-and-medications\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benign prostatic hyperplasia treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flomax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flomax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/propecia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Propecia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/proscar\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proscar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer treatments (including radiation and chemotherapy)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart and blood pressure medications (including, ACE inhibitors, a-Adrenergic blockers, b-adrenergic (beta) blockers, centrally acting agents, diuretics, thiazides, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/statin-side-effects\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal contraceptives (such as Ortho Tri-Cyclen )<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Opioid pain relievers (such as Vicodin, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/oxycontin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxycontin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/percocet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Percocet)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steroid medications (including anabolic steroids and corticosteroids)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter treatments can affect libido, too. \u201cBeing aware of what you\u2019re taking is really important,\u201d explains Dr. Nissola. \u201cBecause sometimes you\u2019re taking a supplement that you don\u2019t think is going to have any impact, and there isn\u2019t a clear and obvious label saying this may impact your sexual life\u2014or may affect your hormones.\u201d Watch out for certain medications, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antifungals, specifically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ketoconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ketoconazole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/fluconazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluconazole<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/diphenhydramine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diphenhydramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chlor-trimeton\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chlor-Trimeton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/chlorpheniramine-maleate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorpheniramine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tagamet-hb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tagamet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/cimetidine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cimetidine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternative treatments, such as medical marijuana, can have a significant negative effect on libido for some patients, according to Dr. Nissola. Though, others experience the opposite effect. \u201cOver-the-counter doesn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s safe. It doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s not going to have any harmful impact on your life,\u201d says Dr. Nissola. \u201cThere is a difference in regulation between over-the-counter and prescription drugs. Folks think that over-the-counter are harmless and safe, and that isn\u2019t the case, sometimes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What to do if you have low libido<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step is a visit to your healthcare provider to make sure it\u2019s not a medical problem affecting your sex drive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Change medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, there\u2019s an equivalent treatment that may not have sexual side effects. For example, \u201ca few antidepressants, like mirtazapine, bupropion, and nefazodone, do not affect libido very much at all and can actually improve it,\u201d according to Dr. Traxler. Or, if hormonal birth control is the issue, a nonhormonal option could work, like an IUD. Even changing the dosage can make a difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until you consult with a physician, \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just stop your medications! Having a spike in blood pressure or uncontrolled depression can arguably worsen sexual function more than any medication side effect,\u201d says Dr. Redmond. \u201cStart with contacting your doctor \u2026 and you don\u2019t have to wait for your next appointment, you can always call in to speak with a nurse.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Treat the underlying condition.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is a medical issue, such as low hormone levels, treating it can help to improve libido. \u201cMen who already have low testosterone levels who receive testosterone as a replacement drug will tend to have a better sex drive,\u201d says Dr. Traxler.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is one approved drug for women who have low libido that was approved in 2019 called bremelanotide, or Vyleesi. It only works for women with a reduced sex drive who are not yet menopausal and who would not mind taking an injection before sex.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Make lifestyle changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reducing alcohol intake, increasing exercise, and eating a healthy diet can all help to restore lost libido. Quitting smoking can also help to improve circulation, which can impact sexual performance and desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Discuss supplements with your physician or pharmacist.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are many [herbal aphrodisiacs] that have been found to be at least reasonably promising,\u201d explains Dr. Traxler. \u201cMost work by affecting testosterone levels so they tend to work better for men compared to women.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are natural ingredients that have considerable evidence they can help with sexual drive, libido, and ED,\u201d agrees Dr. Redmond. \u201cFenugreek, Tribulus, Eurycoma longifolia (Long Jack), and Panax Ginseng are all over-the-counter natural options to talk with your doctor about. There are impressive research studies that show improved sexual function in both men and women when they are used at the right doses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Talk to a therapist.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Couples therapy, sex therapy, or individual psychotherapy can help to resolve mental health conditions that you might manage with medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in libido are challenging to deal with\u2014emotionally and physically\u2014and are often tricky to talk about without placing blame or hurting feelings. Don\u2019t give up on having a healthy sex life. Most libido issues can be resolved with a little persistence. And, in the meantime, lack of desire doesn\u2019t mean you have to sacrifice intimacy.
