This is called the background rate. No studies have demonstrated that they are safe to take during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-pain-medications-are-safe-during-pregnancy\"><b>What pain medications are safe during pregnancy?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safest <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pain-medicine-while-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain medication during pregnancy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is acetaminophen, which is sold over the counter as Tylenol (among other brand names). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your doctor may also prescribe acetaminophen<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent studies indicate that acetaminophen use in pregnancy is not associated with an increased risk of autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability. Acetaminophen use is also not associated with an increased risk of birth defects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the management of persistent headaches, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/headaches-and-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supplementing acetaminophen with caffeine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the treatment of headaches that do not respond to acetaminophen alone. It is important to adhere to the safe daily limits for acetaminophen and caffeine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many over-the-counter pain relievers, particularly those for headaches or migraines, contain caffeine. While limited caffeine consumption (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2010\/08\/moderate-caffeine-consumption-during-pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">less than 200 mg per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) may be safe during pregnancy, it\u2019s important to be aware of potential sources of caffeine to ensure you aren\u2019t exceeding the recommended limit. Higher doses of caffeine may be associated with higher rates of miscarriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription medication metoclopramide combined with diphenhydramine is recommended for the treatment of persistent migraine headaches unresponsive to over-the-counter therapies. The use of metoclopramide is especially useful for the treatment of migraine-associated nausea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondary management of migraines may include the use of triptans like sumatriptan. Use the lowest recommended dosage for short periods, and be careful about combining Tylenol with cold medications that may also contain acetaminophen.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"pain-medications-to-avoid\"><b>Pain medications to avoid<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>NSAIDs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><b> including aspirin and ibuprofen:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are a category that includes aspirin and ibuprofen. Low-dose aspirin can be safe to take when your doctor prescribes it to reduce the chance of certain health risks in pregnancy, but it should only be used when recommended by your doctor. On the other hand, studies have shown that women who take ibuprofen are more likely to develop abnormally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/medicine-and-pregnancy\/about\/index.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/meds\/treatingfortwo\/features\/pain-med-usage.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low levels of fluid around the fetus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and may give birth to babies with heart defects.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Opioid pain medications such as codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking these medications for extended periods may be associated with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/overdose-prevention\/hcp\/clinical-care\/opioid-use-and-pregnancy.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugoverdose\/pdf\/pregnancy_opioid_pain_factsheet-a.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stillbirth, poor fetal growth, and preterm delivery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as withdrawal symptoms in the newborn. Certain SSRIs, like Paxil (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/paroxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paroxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), may be more high-risk than others. ACOG categorizes paroxetine as a second-line treatment option for anxiety in individuals who have used it in the past with good results.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"what-sedatives-or-sleep-aids-are-safe-during-pregnancy\"><b>What sedatives or sleep aids are safe during pregnancy?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among over-the-counter drugs, the antihistamine Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is considered low-risk for pregnant women and developing fetuses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t any completely safe prescription options. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ambien\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ambien<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (zolpidem tartrate) is sometimes prescribed during pregnancy, as it has the least definite association with congenital disorders.
