On top of that, there are a lot of options to choose from. If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed in the children pain reliever aisle, or the children fever reducers section of the pharmacy, use this guide to choose the best over-the-counter medication.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does your child need medication?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many people believe any temperature higher than 98.5 Fahrenheit requires meds, the truth is: Not all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/fever\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fevers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> require treatment. \u201cI always like my families to know that there\u2019s a lot of misinformation out there regarding fever in children,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corey Fish, MD, FAAP,\u00a0 a pediatrician and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-founder and chief medical officer at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bravecare.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brave Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cFever is a symptom of an illness much like a cough or runny nose. The important consideration isn\u2019t the symptom, it\u2019s the cause of the symptom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Old guidance said that a fever higher than 104 degrees Fahrenheit merited a trip to the emergency room, and that all fevers need to be reduced. Now, many pediatricians recommend treating fever only if it\u2019s making your child uncomfortable. Meaning, treating it won\u2019t cure your child any faster, it can just help make being sick a little easier. \u201cA parent never HAS to give medicine to bring a fever down,\u201d Dr. Fish says. \u201cI typically recommend letting the fever run its course, keep up on lots of fluids, and give acetaminophen or ibuprofen based off how the child is feeling, not the number on the thermometer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for pain. If it\u2019s a scraped knee, or run-of-the-mill sore throat, you don\u2019t always need to reach for ibuprofen for kids. A bandage, or natural treatment like a popsicle, could help the ache go away. For more severe, inflammatory conditions\u2014like a toothache, tonsillitis, or ear pain\u2014an over-the-counter remedy could be a good choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is better: Children\u2019s Tylenol or Children\u2019s Motrin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main types of medication for treating pain and reducing fevers for kids: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known as acetaminophen) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children\u2019s Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known as ibuprofen). <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the main considerations when choosing which to use:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safety and effectiveness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTylenol (acetaminophen) and Advil (ibuprofen) are safe for most children, after checking with the healthcare provider to make sure that they do not have a medical condition that contraindicates one or the other,\u201d says Leann Poston, MD, a pediatric medicine practitioner and contributor for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ikonhealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ikon Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, some children are allergic to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, but not acetaminophen. Or, a liver disorder may make acetaminophen dangerous for some children. \u201cWhen choosing between Tylenol [acetaminophen] and Advil [ibuprofen], consider that Ibuprofen can be harder on the stomach, cardiovascular system, and kidneys, but it decreases inflammation, and Tylenol does not,\u201d Dr. Poston explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are both <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/fever\/Pages\/Medications-Used-to-Treat-Fever.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acceptable treatments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aappublications.org\/content\/35\/4\/26.5#:~:text=The%20AAP%20advises%20parents%20to%20use%20acetaminophen%20or%20ibuprofen%2C%20not%20aspirin.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the American Academy of Pediatricians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AAP). Though, it\u2019s important to note that other NSAIDs are not recommended, or safe, for kids. Aleve (naproxen) is not used for fever in infants or children under age 12. While many adults reach for Bayer, Dr. Fish says, \u201cAspirin of any kind should never be given to children due to concern for a rare but serious side effect called Reye&#8217;s syndrome.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-tylenol-an-nsaid\/\"><b>Tylenol vs. NSAIDs<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectiveness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth these medications are effective at treating both pain and fever,\u201d says Dr. Fish. It really depends on personal preference, and what works best for your child.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s40265-017-0751-z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show that acetaminophen is better for treating fevers with flu-like symptoms. Yet, ibuprofen reduces inflammation, and lasts longer than acetaminophen, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hss.edu\/pediatrics-difference-between-tylenol-advil-aleve.asp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hospital for Special Surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In other words, let symptoms and your child\u2019s response to treatment in the past be your guide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should not be used in infants younger than 6 months old,\u201d says Dr. Fish. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/medication-safety\/Pages\/Acetaminophen-for-Fever-and-Pain.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is safe for infants and children of all ages, according to the AAP; however, do not use acetaminophen under 12 weeks of age unless directed by your pediatrician because fever during the first 12 weeks of life should be documented in a medical setting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For children younger than 3 months old (or 90 days), you should always call your pediatrician immediately for a fever greater than or equal to 100.4, explains Dr. Fish.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dosage and type<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When medicating a child\u2019s fever or pain, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlways take the lowest effective dose,\u201d Dr. Poston says. \u201cDose based on weight, and do not exceed the maximum dose per day.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/measuring-childrens-medicine-properly\/\"><b>Learn how to measure your child\u2019s medication properly<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your child can\u2019t swallow pills, or has trouble keeping food down, there are liquid, chewable, and suppository forms available.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best option for a vomiting child is probably acetaminophen because it can be administered rectally if needed and it has less potential to upset the stomach compared to ibuprofen,\u201d Dr. Fish says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you use a liquid form, just be sure to use the enclosed measuring cup or syringe. It is easy to administer the wrong dose using a kitchen teaspoon. Too little medication won\u2019t be effective, and too much can be dangerous. \u201cThere is a specific dosing schedule and maximum dose per day to avoid side effects that can be serious,\u201d explains Martha Rivera, MD, pediatrician at Adventist Health White Memorial in Boyle Heights, California. \u201cAcetaminophen is metabolized in the liver. NSAIDS [ibuprofen] are metabolized in the kidneys.\u201d Too high of a dose can cause liver or kidney damage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Academy of Pediatrics offers dosing charts and guidance for acetaminophen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/medication-safety\/Pages\/Acetaminophen-for-Fever-and-Pain.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ibuprofen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/medication-safety\/Pages\/Ibuprofen-for-Fever-and-Pain.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-dosage\/\"><b>How much ibuprofen is safe to take?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alternating Tylenol and Motrin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-and-acetaminophen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol and Advil can be alternated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help bring down a stubborn fever or for pain, however, the risk for overdose is higher,\u201d says Dr. Poston. You can give Ibuprofen every six hours, and acetaminophen every four hours. Alternating between the two can reduce the amount of time between doses when your child is untreated. For example, you could give a child acetaminophen at 9 a.m., ibuprofen at 12 p.m., acetaminophen again at 3 p.m., and ibuprofen again at 6 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be hard enough to remember when the last time you gave your child a single medication in the middle of the night. Adding a second medication further complicates the situation. \u201cChoose one or the other initially,\u201d Dr. Poston says. \u201cIf you do dose with both, write down your dosing schedule to minimize the chance for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/at-home\/medication-safety\/Pages\/Medication-Safety-Tips.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overdose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Dosing with both allows you to give a medication every three hours instead of four for Tylenol [acetaminophen] and six for ibuprofen.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whichever medication you choose, both treatments are intended for short-term relief of symptoms. If your child\u2019s pain or fever persists for more than 24 hours or your child is exhibiting other signs of distress, don\u2019t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician for help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBottom line is parents know their children,\u201d Dr. Rivera says. \u201cWhen there is concern that there is a signal that [the] child is not well please contact [your] health provider for guidance, counseling, and appropriate dosing.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, it is important to store medications out of reach of children. Keep the childproof caps on bottles, and read labels of combination products (such as allergy, cough, or cold formulations) to prevent overdosing ingredients. If your child accidentally takes a medication or you overdose your child, call <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.poison.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poison Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> immediately at 1-800-222-1222 before doing anything else unless 911 emergency care is needed. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When your kids are sick, the only thing on your mind is helping them to feel better\u2014as soon as possible.
