It was fun, but you are about to pay the consequences with an annoying bout of food- and alcohol-induced heartburn. You reach for the Pepcid, but something stops you in your tracks. Your pharmacist told you that some medications should never be mixed with alcohol (and you\u2019re slightly inebriated). Is heartburn medication one of them?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go ahead and relax\u2014alcohol and heartburn medications do not have a drug-drug interaction, and it\u2019s safe to take them if you\u2019ve been drinking, says Dr. Holly Alvarado, Pharm.D., a clinical pharmacist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dukehealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duke Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, there are a couple caveats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/famotidine-vs-omeprazole\/\"><b>Pepcid vs. Prilosec<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is heartburn?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taco-related or not, heartburn is extremely common in the United States. According to the International Foundation for Gastrointestinal Disorders, it is estimated that more than <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutgerd.org\/introduction-to-gerd\/heartburn-and-gerd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">44%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of Americans experience heartburn on a monthly basis. A symptom of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niddk.nih.gov\/health-information\/digestive-diseases\/acid-reflux-ger-gerd-adults\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid reflux<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than a condition itself, heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up into the esophagus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heartburn might feel like a burning sensation in your chest (behind the breastbone) and be accompanied with a bad taste in your mouth, a burning feeling in your throat, and sometimes difficulty swallowing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic heartburn tends to accompany <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heartburn-how-to-treat-nausea-and-stomachaches\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gastroesophageal reflux disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (GERD). It is also associated with several other medical conditions, so consult a healthcare professional if you experience heartburn frequently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Heartburn medications<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many people, heartburn relief is easily attainable with over-the-counter and\/or prescription medications, such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic antacids, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/maalox-max\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maalox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pepto-bismol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepto Bismol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutgerd.org\/medications\/h2-blockers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H2 blockers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/pepcid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pepcid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (famotidine), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tagamet-hb\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tagamet<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(cimetidine), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nizatidine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Axid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (nizatidine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutgerd.org\/medications\/proton-pump-inhibitors-ppis.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proton pump inhibitors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/prilosec-otc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prilosec<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (omeprazole)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nexium\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nexium<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(esomeprazole), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/lansoprazole\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevacid<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(lansoprazole), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/protonix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protonix<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pantoprazole)<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, which of these heartburn meds is best? John Beckner, RPh, senior director of strategic initiatives for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ncpa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Community Pharmacists Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says that depends on the individual. He suggests talking to a pharmacist about it rather than just grabbing one off a shelf. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPlease consult with your pharmacist\u2014I think that is always a good rule of thumb,\u201d he says, adding that PPIs and H2 blockers are very powerful medications and it is prudent to use them appropriately and as recommended.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription-discount-card\"><b>Get a prescription coupon<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>A note on alcohol and ulcers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, be aware that you should avoid alcohol altogether if you have ulcers or other serious stomach problems. This is because alcohol can increase your risk of bleeding, ultimately making your condition even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> problematic. The medication you take for the condition (like Pepcid) isn\u2019t the issue; it is the condition itself, explains Beckner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Avoid metoclopramide and alcohol<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occasionally, a patient may receive a prescription for metoclopramide, a gut motility stimulator, to treat heartburn. This is considered off-label use, meaning that while metoclopramide isn\u2019t an FDA-approved treatment for heartburn it is OK for your doctor to prescribe it to mitigate the condition. If you are taking <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/metoclopramide-hcl\">metoclopramide<\/a> (also known as Reglan) for heartburn or any other condition, you should avoid alcohol because it can enhance the alcohol effects of central nervous system depression (headache, weakness, impaired mental, etc.), says Dr. Alvarado.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese agents \u2026 have potential to cause side effects that would be undesirable when using alcohol,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nexium-vs-prilosec\/\"><b>Nexium vs. Prilosec<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><b>Avoid ranitidine and alcohol<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that one frequently-used H2 blocker, ranitidine (brand name Zantac) is under recall due to safety concerns and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/pharmacies-pull-zantac-ranitidine-recall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in April the FDA requested that it be removed from all store shelves<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The bigger issue when it comes to heartburn and alcohol is that drinking too much can actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trigger<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heartburn, says Kristen Smith, MS, RD, spokesperson for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eatright.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe more alcohol you drink, the more likely you are to experience heartburn,\u201d Smith says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith says red wine is one of the biggest culprits. And, because caffeine can <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trigger heartburn, be cautious about drinking caffeine-infused alcoholic beverages, like Spanish coffee or rum and cola, she adds. If your goal is to decrease your chances of getting heartburn, reducing the amount of alcohol you consume may help, Smith explains. However, she also warns that it isn\u2019t just the alcohol that counts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should consider all the foods and beverages you consume,\u201d she says, adding that fatty and\/or acidic foods, spicy ingredients, mint, and chocolate are also big offenders when it comes to heartburn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, it isn\u2019t just the types of foods you eat\u2014the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">way<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you eat can trigger heartburn, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEating too quickly and in large amounts can increase your chances of experiencing heartburn,\u201d Smith says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Taco Tuesday is here again, and you\u2019ve gone a little overboard on the carne asada and margaritas.
