Let&#8217;s look at some vaccine statistics and facts to understand better what they are and why they&#8217;re essential.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-vaccinations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are vaccinations?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/vaccines-and-immunization-what-is-vaccination\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO), vaccinations are \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a simple, safe, and effective way of protecting you against harmful diseases before you come into contact with them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/tag\/vaccines\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a biological preparation that stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies, which help kill diseases. A vaccine often contains part of the disease it&#8217;s trying to prevent. It may have weakened or killed forms of a microbe, one of its toxins, or even one of its surface proteins. Putting an inactive part of the disease into the body teaches the immune system to recognize and kill it upon future exposure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"types-of-vaccines\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Types of vaccines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are six different types of vaccines, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/immunization\/basics\/types\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Health and Human Services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (HHS):\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Inactivated<\/b> <b>vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain the germ&#8217;s &#8220;killed form&#8221; that causes the disease they&#8217;re trying to prevent. They don&#8217;t provide immune protection that&#8217;s as strong as attenuated vaccines, so several doses (called boosters) may be required over a person\u2019s lifetime.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Live-attenuated vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain a weakened, or attenuated, form of the germ-causing disease. They provide a long-lasting immune response but aren&#8217;t the best choice for people with compromised immune systems.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Toxoid<\/b> <b>vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain toxins made by the virus or bacteria that cause the disease. They create immunity to the specific parts of the germ that cause disease, not the disease itself.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Conjugate, subunit, recombinant, and polysaccharide<\/b> <b>vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain only particular parts of the germ, like a protein or a sugar, that cause disease. Conjugate vaccines are safe even for people with compromised immune systems.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Viral vector vaccines<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain a modified version of a different virus (such as influenza or measles) to deliver protection against the virus or bacteria to target cells.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not contain the disease they\u2019re trying to protect. Rather, they contain messengers that teach cells how to launch an immune response against a specific virus or bacteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"vaccinations-vs-immunizations\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccinations vs. immunizations<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines sometimes get confused with immunizations. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/vaccines.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Library of Medicine\u2019s MedlinePlus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vaccination refers to the process of getting a vaccine, while immunization is the protection that happens in the body after receiving a vaccine. It&#8217;s the process of the body becoming <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immune<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the disease targeted by the vaccination. For example, a rotavirus vaccine would give someone immunity to rotavirus infection.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"vaccination-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccination statistics<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, there are vaccines to prevent more than 20 life-threatening diseases. Durant, PLLC. Since vaccine reactions can be very severe, Durant stresses the importance of seeking immediate medical care for symptoms of a severe reaction, such as weakness, tingling, numbness, nerve pain, seizures, brain damage, hearing loss, fainting, excruciating pain at the injection site, or loss in a range of motion in an arm. \u201cIn many cases, early diagnosis and treatment can help minimize the severity of a serious vaccine injury.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, Durant says serious and long-lasting vaccine reactions are rare. \u201cIt is estimated that approximately one to two individuals out of 1 million suffer serious and enduring injuries as a result of vaccines.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"anti-vaccination-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-vaccination statistics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1998, a British healthcare provider published falsified information linking a relationship between the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) and a subsequent diagnosis of autism. Vaccination rates dropped, and the belief that vaccines are linked to autism or health problems is still something that many believe.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 10% of Americans say the risks of childhood vaccines for MMR outweigh the benefits. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/science\/2023\/05\/16\/americans-largely-positive-views-of-childhood-vaccines-hold-steady\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 36% of Americans say the risks of COVID-19 vaccines outweigh the benefits. (Pew Research Center, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only 70% of Americans say healthy children should be required to be vaccinated before attending public school. (Pew Research Center, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the number of vaccinated kindergarteners has dropped from 95% to 93% since 2020. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the WHO listed vaccine hesitancy as one of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/spotlight\/ten-threats-to-global-health-in-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top 10 global and public health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> threats. Many organizations work to address vaccination concerns and educate people about their importance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"herd-immunization-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herd immunization statistics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2772168\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herd immunity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> became a buzzword amid the coronavirus pandemic. When a high percentage of the population is immune to an infectious disease, whether from active infection or vaccination, the community (or herd) is better protected. Active infection of these vaccine-preventable diseases is generally associated with worse outcomes than the vaccination itself, so vaccination to obtain herd immunity is preferred.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When people are not vaccinated, immunization rates drop. And when immunization rates drop, the risk of an outbreak increases. In 2024,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2024\/p1114-measles-cases.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a press release from the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported a 20% increase in 2023 measles cases worldwide compared to the previous year. The cause was listed as inadequate immunization or poor vaccination adherence. As of April 4, 2025, there have been 607 reported cases of measles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each infectious disease requires a certain level of population immunity, preferably by vaccination coverage when available, to create herd immunity.
