Even though only about a quarter of those individuals have received test results indicative of a nutritional deficiency. All of which raises the question: Are Americans throwing money away? Are vitamins and supplements really necessary for our health and well-being? Or can you get the essential nutrients you need from diet alone?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, for pregnant women, at least, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pregnant-women-folic-acid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">folic acid supplementation is imperative for fetal development<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But when it comes to men\u2019s health, the answer isn\u2019t so cut and dried.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ingredients-in-a-daily-multivitamin-for-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingredients in a daily multivitamin for men<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it\u2019s important to understand the common ingredients found in<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/multivitamin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multivitamins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for men of all ages. However, ingredients and quantities vary from product to product (Meaning, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/one-a-day-mens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One a Day Men<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t be exactly the same as Nature Made Multi for Him or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/centrum-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centrum Men Multivitamin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). You should carefully read the ingredient label to find allergens, artificial colors, preservatives, and other ingredients you may be sensitive to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ingredients may also vary depending on your age. For example, multivitamins for men over age 60 may contain additional ingredients such as saw palmetto or magnesium. Older men may also want to consider their vitamin B12 dosage. Important for the nervous system and red blood cells, vitamin B12 levels often decrease with age, says Sesso.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/can-vitamins-treat-erectile-dysfunction\/\"><b>Can vitamins treat erectile dysfunction?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"should-men-take-a-daily-multivitamin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should men take a daily multivitamin?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the supplement industry\u2019s grandiose market size, a relatively small amount of research has been done into the efficacy of vitamins. And for those studies that do exist, the findings are often conflicting.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"there-s-not-strong-evidence-of-benefits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s not strong evidence of benefits.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One large-scale study, known as the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/1380451\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physicians&#8217; Health Study II<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracked a group of male physicians for more than a decade (between the years of 1997 and 2011), as they took either a multivitamin or a placebo. The results? Those on the multivitamin had an 8% reduced risk of cancer and also demonstrated a reduced risk for cataracts, according to Sesso, who led the study. They did not, however, display a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, a 2019 study conducted by Tufts and Harvard Universities and published in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/10.7326\/M18-2478\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annals of Internal Medicine<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that dietary supplement use had no effect on mortality (i.e., it didn\u2019t help people live longer or cure disease).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What conclusions can be drawn from all of this? \u201cFor most men, there is probably no absolutely compelling reason why they have to take any dietary supplements,\u201d says Sesso.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"supplements-can-fill-nutritional-gaps\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supplements can fill nutritional gaps.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if your diet is lacking in key vitamins and minerals (for instance, you\u2019re on a vegan or gluten-free diet, both of which can lead to a Vitamin B12 deficiency), a multivitamin can help fill that hole. Additionally, if you have a specific underlying condition or you just want to be extra vigilant about your nutrition, Sesso says you may want to consider a multivitamin after discussing it with your physician or nutritionist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"check-for-vitamin-interactions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check for vitamin interactions.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to check with your healthcare provider about supplements, as there can be possible interactions with other drugs. Sesso says he is less worried about one vitamin interacting with another as he is about<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/medications-vitamin-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mixing supplements and drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, Vitamin K and anticoagulants don\u2019t always play nice, says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.personanutrition.com\/nutritionists\/carielle-nikkel-ms-rdn.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carielle Nikkel,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MS, RDN, the director of nutrition at Persona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVitamin K is an essential vitamin to promote normal amounts of blood clotting in the body and prevent excessive bleeding,\u201d she says. \u201cHowever, when combined, vitamin K can work against anticoagulant medications and increase the risk for a blood clot.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-vitamins-should-not-be-taken-together\/\"><b>What vitamins should not be taken together<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"don-t-take-too-much\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t take too much.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also the possibility of over-supplementing. While that isn\u2019t likely to happen with a multivitamin, where the quantities usually fall within specific guidelines and you only take one daily, it can happen with individual supplements if you aren\u2019t following or are unaware of the recommended dosages. For instance, the Tufts and Harvard study found that large amounts of calcium supplements (in excess of 1,000 mg\/day) were linked to an increased risk of cancer deaths.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High doses of vitamins can also be potentially dangerous. Too much vitamin A can cause nausea, headaches, or dizziness, and in the most extreme (and rare) circumstances, even death, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminA-Consumer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
