In most years, getting sick is the last thing you\u2019re thinking about in the summer months. When a cough or the sniffles strike, it could be allergies. Or, it could be a summer cold.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"can-you-catch-a-cold-in-the-summer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you catch a cold in the summer?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, a summer cold is just a common cold that you experience during a different time of year. Even though it seems unfair to be ill when the kids are out of school and your beach vacation is booked, it\u2019s possible. It just might be caused by a slightly different virus than the cold you catch in the winter months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDifferent viruses peak at different times of the year depending on humidity and temperature,\u201d says Leann Poston, MD, a medical contributor for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invigor Medical<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOthers have no peak and are present year-round.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there are many causes, two common viruses are behind most colds, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsinhealth.nih.gov\/2012\/06\/catching-cold-when-its-warm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Institutes of Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they are most active during different times of the year:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Rhinoviruses:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> These survive best in cooler temperatures, and are most prevalent from September through May.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Enteroviruses: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-polio enteroviruses are the second most common type after rhinoviruses. They are most active from June to October.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are [more than] 200 viruses that can cause a cold throughout the year,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/julia-blank-md-6b034b\/\">Julia Blank<\/a>, MD, a family medicine physician at Santa Monica Family Physicians in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSummer colds are more often caused by enteroviruses, while winter colds are generally due to viruses that survive better in colder weather\u2014such as rhinoviruses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both types cause respiratory symptoms like runny nose, sore throat, and congestion\u2014and most often clear up without the help of antibiotics. However, enteroviruses can also (less commonly) cause symptoms like fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, and conjunctivitis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These potential complications could contribute to the myth that summer colds are worse than winter colds. Although it may feel worse to be stuck in bed when the sun is shining and your family is barbecuing outside, there\u2019s no evidence to suggest that summer colds are worse than winter ones. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think they just feel worse because they are unexpected and people generally are more active in the summer and having a cold slows them down,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.invigormedical.com\/contributors\/leann-poston-md\/\">Dr. Poston<\/a> says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"how-do-you-catch-a-summer-cold\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do you catch a summer cold?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The viruses that cause cold symptoms are contagious. They are transmitted through tiny droplets in the air that are expelled from a person\u2019s nose and mouth when they sneeze, cough, or talk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easier to catch them when you\u2019re spending a lot of time indoors with infected people, like school or the office. \u201cSummer colds are common, though less so than in winter because cold viruses spread more easily when people are packed into enclosed spaces (we\u2019re more likely to be indoors when it\u2019s cold out), also cold viruses spread more easily in cold dry air,\u201d Dr. Blank explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to avoid getting sick (or passing the virus to others) is by covering coughs and sneezes and practicing good hand hygiene. That means handwashing with soap and water for at least 30 seconds after touching shared surfaces, like door knobs or elevator buttons. When you can\u2019t get to a sink, use hand sanitizer. And, always avoid touching your nose, mouth, and face as much as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"summer-cold-vs-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer cold vs. allergies\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer colds and seasonal allergies have similar symptoms:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny or stuffy nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General malaise or fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since they occur during the same time of year, it can be easy to mistake them for one another. There are a few ways to tell them apart:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fever:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a fever, it is most likely an infection,\u201d Dr. Goldsobel says. \u201cNo fever with allergies.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Body aches:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> While a cold and allergies can tire you out, generalized body and muscle aches are more commonly symptoms of a cold, COVID-19, or the flu\u2014not seasonal allergies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Appearance of mucus: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSecretions tend to be thin and clear with allergies, but may get thicker and discolored (yellow\/green) with a cold,\u201d Dr. Blank says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Timing of symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you had summer allergies last year, or if your nose starts running after you\u2019re done mowing the lawn, it\u2019s more likely that symptoms are triggered by a sensitivity to airborne allergens than an upper respiratory infection. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allergy symptoms may fluctuate depending on environment (e.g., being outdoors vs. indoors), cold symptoms don\u2019t typically vary depending on environment\u2014the symptoms get worse over a period of days and then slowly improve,\u201d explains Dr. Blank.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Length of symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cold symptoms typically go away within 10 days. If yours last an entire season, you can probably rule out viral infection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Response to medication: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAllergies typically respond well to antihistamines,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.memorialcare.org\/providers\/kristine-s-arthur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kristine Arthur, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, internist at MemorialCare Medical Group in Laguna Woods, California. \u201cOlder traditional antihistamines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used. They work well but cause sleepiness. New non-sedating antihistamines work well for daytime. These include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014generic versions are available.\u201d They don\u2019t usually help symptoms of a cold.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re concerned, or if your symptoms start to worsen, don\u2019t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider. Sometimes colds can progress to more serious illnesses, like bronchitis or pneumonia. Or, you can mistake a bacterial infection, like strep throat, for a common cold. That being said, there are some effective over-the-counter medications and home remedies that can help to ease your discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"over-the-counter-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over-the-counter medications<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These treatments won\u2019t cure your infection, but they can help make the symptoms a little less painful. Depending on what you\u2019re experiencing, the following can help.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fever reducer: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OTC pain relievers like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (acetaminophen) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/motrin-ib\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ibuprofen) are effective at reducing fevers, and providing temporary relief of minor aches and pains\u2014like headache or body aches.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decongestant:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you\u2019re feeling stuffy, a decongestant like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/sudafed-sinus-congestion-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudafed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pseudoephedrine) can help clear out nasal passages and sinuses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Expectorant:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For coughs that travel down into your chest, a medication like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/mucinex\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mucinex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (guaifenesin) can soften mucus so it\u2019s easier to expel.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cough suppressant:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> To avoid staying awake all night hacking and coughing, try a nighttime cough suppressant, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/robitussin-nighttime-cough-dm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robitussin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Nasal spray:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Some healthcare providers recommend using a nasal spray, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/flonase-allergy-relief\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flonase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fluticasone), at the first sign of cold symptoms, especially if you\u2019re prone to sinus infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are also combination products to treat cold symptoms that may contain several of these medications in one pill or liquid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"home-remedies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home remedies<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you prefer to use homeopathic remedies, or your symptoms aren\u2019t severe, the following lifestyle changes may alleviate the most common signs of a summer cold.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><\/b><b>Rest: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sleep is the best cure for most viral infections. Make sure to take it easy when you feel tired, and log eight hours of shuteye nightly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Hydration:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Drink plenty of water, especially in the warmer months, to help your body recover from infection. \u201cAlso avoid alcohol, caffeine, and excessive heat, which can dehydrate,\u201d Dr. Blank suggests.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Proper nutrition: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat a diet packed with nutrients, like vitamin C, to help your immune system bounce back. \u201cEating chicken soup may also have an anti-inflammatory effect and help to clear nasal passages more quickly,\u201d says Dr. Blank.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Humidifiers:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Moist, steamy air can help loosen congestion and make you feel more comfortable. If you don\u2019t have a humidifier, try taking a hot shower when you wake up or before bed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Saline nasal rinse:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Also known as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ayr-saline-nasal-neti-rinse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">neti pot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a salt water rinse can clear excess mucus from your nose and sinuses so you can breathe a little easier.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Supplements: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although there isn\u2019t hard evidence that they help, some people swear by vitamin C, zinc, licorice root, oil of oregano, and echinacea to recover from a cold. \u201cS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ome studies also show that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4848651\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elderberry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help reduce the severity and duration of a cold,\u201d says Dr. Blank.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Just make sure to discuss any herbal remedies with your healthcare provider before adding them to your daily regimen.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Throat lozenges: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air conditioning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be a real blessing in summer, but it can also create a cold, dry environment that viruses love. Your throat can suffer from the dry environment too. Keep the air conditioner at a consistently moderate temperature and use throat lozenges to soothe a sore throat.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRest, drink lots of liquids, exercise as you are able and spend 15-20 minutes out in the sun two to three times weekly to maintain your Vitamin D level,\u201d recommends Dr. Poston. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if you spend time taking good care of your mind and body, it will help you to stay healthy all summer long.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you think of summertime, warm weather is often the first thing that comes to mind (with vacation and relaxation following closely behind).
