However, when these actions interfere with their school work and result in frequent disciplinary action, parents might wonder if there\u2019s more to this behavior than kids just being kids. Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/resources\/adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders diagnosed among children in the U.S. Fortunately, there are multiple medications and types of behavioral therapy to help children and adults with ADHD.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/child-misdiagnosed-adhd\/\"><b>Is your child being misdiagnosed with ADHD?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-is-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is ADHD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) defines ADHD as a common disorder marked by an ongoing pattern of inattention and\/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development. Symptoms of ADHD include chronic inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Many are diagnosed with ADHD as children, as symptoms become prominent in early development and academic work. ADHD symptoms can persist into adulthood and affect social relationships as well as academic and work performance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cADHD is a neurological disorder, although the exact cause has yet to be determined,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/roanokeadhd.com\/about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabriel Villarreal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LPC, a counselor at Virginia-based ADHD Counseling in the Roanoke Valley. \u201cWhat we know is that it occurs when the prefrontal cortex growth lags behind the rest of the brain.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Villarreal says people with ADHD may also have an imbalance of certain neurotransmitters (chemical messengers in the brain), like dopamine and norepinephrine. \u201cDopamine is responsible for attention, drive, and motivation. Norepinephrine is responsible for creating calm, and it\u2019s what\u2019s partially responsible for hyperactivity.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-common-is-adhd\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How common is ADHD?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD affects about 2%\u20135% of adults worldwide, and the average prevalence is 3.1%. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0165178123003992?via%3Dihub\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychiatry Research<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As of 2022, 11.4% of U.S. children ages 3\u201317 years old had ever been diagnosed with ADHD, which is up from 11% in 2016. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1080\/15374416.2024.2335625?needAccess=true\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2016, 6.5 million U.S. children had been diagnosed with ADHD, but that number had risen to 7.1 million by 2022. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surveys from 2016\u20132019 found that Louisiana had the highest prevalence of ADHD in children ages 3\u201317 (16.3%) and California had the lowest (6.1%). (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9489617\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Attention Disorders<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD-I (inattentive ADHD) is more common than ADHD-HI (hyperactive ADHD) and ADHD-C (combined ADHD). (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychiatry Research<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boys are nearly two times more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ADHD. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/databriefs\/db499.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Center for Health Statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NCHS), 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White non-Hispanic children are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than Black or Hispanic children. (NCHS, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As family income increases, the likelihood of an ADHD diagnosis tends to decrease. (NCHS, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Worldwide surveys have demonstrated that the prevalence of ADHD is higher in higher-income countries like the U.S. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pure.rug.nl\/ws\/files\/174211357\/Fayyad2017_Article_TheDescriptiveEpidemiologyOfDS.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-in-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD in children\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The percentage of children diagnosed with ADHD increases with age. Surveys show that 2.4% (274,000) of children ages 3\u20135 and 11.5% (2.8 million) of children ages\u00a0 6\u201311 have been diagnosed with ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The median age of ADHD diagnosis is 6.2 years. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/backend\/ptpmcrender.fcgi?accid=PMC4473855&amp;blobtype=pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Academy of Child &amp; Adolescent Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2014)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with other mental, behavioral, and developmental disorders (MBDD) are more likely to be diagnosed with severe ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 98% of all children currently diagnosed with ADHD also have another MBDD, including learning and language disorders. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral or conduct problems (44.1%) are the most common co-occurring disorders in children with ADHD, followed by anxiety (39.1%), a learning disability (36.5%), a developmental delay (21.7%), and autism (14.4%). (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"adhd-severity-in-children\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD severity in children<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The median age of diagnosis is 7 years for mild ADHD, 6.1 years for moderate ADHD, and 4.4 years for severe ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Academy of Child &amp; Adolescent Psychiatry<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2014)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate ADHD is the most common severity in children, affecting 45.3% of those ages 3\u201317 with a current diagnosis. Nearly 42% have been diagnosed with mild ADHD, and 12.8% with severe ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in children whose parents or guardians had a lower income or had no college education. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children with moderate or severe ADHD are more likely to take medication for it than those with mild ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"adhd-statistics-in-teens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD statistics in teens\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four million (15.5%) teenagers 12\u201317 years old have ever been diagnosed with ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Clinical Child &amp; Adolescent Psychology<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teenagers with public insurance (17.6%) were more likely to have been diagnosed with ADHD compared to those with private insurance (12.8%) or no insurance (6.7%). (NCHS, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data from 2001\u20132004, which is the most current information available, suggests that the prevalence of ADHD is slightly higher in Black teens (9.3%) than in White (8.9%) and Hispanic teens (8.5%). (NIMH)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-medication-for-teens\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adolescent ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cases, about half show severe impairment. (NIMH)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"adhd-in-the-classroom\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD in the classroom<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/backend\/ptpmcrender.fcgi?accid=PMC5732840&amp;blobtype=pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Pediatrics<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, children with ADHD need extra support in the classroom in order to achieve outcomes similar to their peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSchools can accommodate children with ADHD with modifications in the classroom,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drnekeshiahammond.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nekeshia Hammond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Psy.D., a psychologist at Hammond Psychology and Associates based in Florida. \u201cSome examples of modifications include, but are not limited to: taking additional breaks, assigned seating arrangement (e.g., sitting closer to the teacher), extended time on tests, quizzes, and assignments, as well as taking tests in a separate setting to reduce distractions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explains that each child\u2019s academic experience is different. \u201cSome children struggle academically due to significant difficulties with attention and\/or hyperactivity, whereas other students who have learned to cope with the ADHD symptoms may experience less academic disruptions.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes ADHD symptoms lead to social challenges as well. \u201cSome youth can have problems with self-control, leading to verbal or physical altercations with other students,\u201d Dr. Hammond says.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After medication, school support is the most common form of ADHD treatment for children. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Journal of Pediatrics,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2018)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2019 study found that at least 20% of children ages 4\u201317 do not receive any school services to help with their ADHD. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30526188\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Attention Disorders<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behavioral classroom management is provided to only 1 in 3 children with ADHD, but nearly 2 in 3 receive educational support. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Attention Disorders<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Individualized education programs (IEPs) are more common than Section 504 plans for children with ADHD. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Attention Disorders<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2019)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-in-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD in adults<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers believe 15.5 million U.S. adults live with ADHD as of 2023, which is nearly double the 2018 estimate of 8.7 million. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/pdfs\/mm7340a1-H.pdf\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmcp.org\/doi\/full\/10.18553\/jmcp.2021.21290\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Managed Care and Specialty Pharmacy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2021)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only about 44% of U.S. adults with ADHD had received a diagnosis before they turned 18. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adults with a current ADHD diagnosis are more likely to be younger than 50, less likely to have a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher, more likely to live below the federal poverty level, and more likely to be White and non-Hispanic. (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a survey conducted in late 2023 by the National Center for Health Statistics, ADHD prevalence among adults is currently about 6% in the U.S. However, the rate of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adult-adhd-medication-treatment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD in adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is likely underreported for several reasons. First, the diagnostic criteria for ADHD was initially developed for children, so people have only recently been able to receive an initial diagnosis in adulthood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, some adults may go undiagnosed and therefore untreated because of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5567978\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">co-occurring mental health conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that mask the symptoms of ADHD, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Bipolar disorder:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Co-occurring in 5.1%\u201347.1% of people with ADHD<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Depression:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Co-occurring in 18.6%\u201353.3% of people with ADHD<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mood and anxiety disorders:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Co-occurring in 28%\u201350% of people with ADHD<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, research suggests up to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4990613\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">86.5% of children with ADHD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will continue to experience symptoms as adults. With the current prevalence of ADHD in children estimated at 11.4%, the adult prevalence could be as high as 9.8%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Hammond says the prevalence falls slightly from childhood to adulthood because some adults previously diagnosed with ADHD have learned to cope with their symptoms and do not meet the criteria for ADHD later in their lives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey would not necessarily meet \u2018full criteria\u2019 for ADHD\u2014they may still have some of the attention symptoms, but not enough to receive a diagnosis. Most research suggests that ADHD does not really \u2018<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/adhd-facts-myths\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go away<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u2019 but more so, adults report fewer symptoms. For instance, hyperactivity symptoms typically decrease with age,\u201d Dr. Hammond says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also notes that some people experience milder symptoms in adulthood because they\u2019ve \u201clearned triggers and ways to cope with their ADHD symptoms.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"adhd-treatment-statistics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD treatment statistics<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most effective ADHD treatment is a combination of medication and behavioral therapy. Stimulant medications, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/adderall\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adderall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/amphetamine-dextroamphetamine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amphetamine-dextroamphetamine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ritalin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ritalin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/methylphenidate-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methylphenidate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/treatments\/11766-adhd-medication\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often prescribed first<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If stimulants don\u2019t work, a healthcare provider might try a non-stimulant medication such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/atomoxetine-hcl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atomoxetine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These medications affect dopamine and\/or norepinephrine to help patients concentrate and feel less impulsive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a popular form of counseling for people with ADHD. A CBT practitioner can teach people how to better recognize and respond to their thoughts and emotions. With practice, CBT can be used to develop time management strategies and organizational skills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"adhd-treatment-in-adults\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ADHD treatment in adults<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription stimulant treatments are taken by one-third (33.4%) of U.S. adults with ADHD. Non-stimulant treatments are taken by only 6%.
