There are very few contraindications to vaccination and many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/hcp\/acip-recs\/general-recs\/contraindications.html#t-02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conditions are incorrectly perceived as contraindications or precautions to vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so it is important to discuss your concerns with your provider before skipping vaccines. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/should-not-vacc.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who cannot receive some or all vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rely on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apic.org\/monthly_alerts\/herd-immunity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">herd immunity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014the immunized people surrounding them\u2014to act as a barrier against disease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This makes it even more important for all those who are physically able to get vaccinated. By keeping yourself and your family up-to-date on your immunizations, you\u2019re not only protecting yourselves, but also those around you. This August, in celebration of National Immunization Awareness Month, do your part to make sure that you and your family are properly immunized\u2014including for COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is immunization?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/health.gov\/news-archive\/announcements\/2018\/08\/toolkit-national-immunization-awareness-month-3\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Immunization Awareness Month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s important to understand what exactly is immunization. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/topics\/immunization\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Immunization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the process of making an individual immune, or resistant, to an infectious disease. Once immunized against a specific disease, your body\u2019s immune system is better able to fight off and prevent any future infections from that disease and reduce transmission to susceptible persons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common way that immunization occurs is through vaccination. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/vpd-vac-basics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contain proteins that encourage your immune system to produce the antibodies to fight against that disease, ensuring you won\u2019t get it in the future. Vaccines are commonly given through injections, pills, or nasal sprays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a relatively painless procedure with a big payoff\u2014protection against a wide range of diseases, from tetanus to measles to the common flu. Immunization is the reason why the World Health Organization was able to declare smallpox eradicated in 1980, and why infectious diseases such as polio and measles are so uncommon today. Vaccination is simple, affordable, and, most importantly, mandatory\u2014especially for kids. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/ash\/oah\/adolescent-development\/physical-health-and-nutrition\/vaccines\/where-and-how-to-get-vaccines\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insurance plans must cover most vaccines without co-payment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/programs\/vfc\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vaccineinformation.org\/state-immunization-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> programs that provide vaccines for uninsured persons. Many vaccines are most effective if they are first received as infants and children, and then kept up into adulthood on their prescribed schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Immunization Awareness Month<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a reason that August is National Immunization Awareness Month. August is the ideal time to immunize, before schools and universities start, while children, adolescents, and young adults are presenting for back to school physicals, before the start of respiratory illness season and before people cluster indoors where they are more likely to spread illnesses. And soon, kids will be heading back to school, exposing them to new and diverse diseases\u2014especially because many have just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/travel-vaccines-overseas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveled on summer vacation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spreading awareness and accurate information about the benefits of immunization is more important than ever, especially given the growing anti-vaccination trend. Many people, especially parents, are concerned about possible negative side effects of vaccination. Unfortunately, there have been large outbreaks of vaccine preventable illnesses such as measles and mumps, and polio is still prevalent in developing countries because of inadequate vaccination rates. Vaccines enable your immune system to fight diseases that would otherwise keep you bedridden, hospitalized, or cause serious long-term injury, or worse. Not only do they keep you feeling better and give you peace of mind about your health, but they also protect those around you. But most vaccines don\u2019t last forever, and many of them require individuals to be revaccinated or receive multiple doses on a schedule. While your provider can\u2019t require that you get vaccinated on this schedule, institutions, such as schools and workplaces, can. Your children\u2019s school or sports program will likely ask for proof that they are up to date on immunizations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/college-vaccinations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before allowing them to enroll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
