By practicing all these safety measures, you can not only keep yourself and your family healthy\u2014but also your community at large.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But just because you know you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mask up doesn\u2019t mean you know <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here, we speak with infectious disease experts about what materials are best for reusable face masks, how to wear them correctly, and when and how to clean your masks properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do face masks prevent the spread of coronavirus?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cloth or surgical masks help prevent the transmission of respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 through airborne droplets released during sneezing, coughing, or even talking, especially in poorly ventilated, small spaces. (Wearing a mask can also protect you from the common cold or flu, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/influenza-might-spread-air-study-finds-n839166\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which a 2018 study determined could also be airborne<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2020-07-14\/evidence-mounts-that-masks-help-lower-your-exposure-to-the-coronavirus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wearing a mask could mean you won\u2019t get as sick if you do contract the coronavirus.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You should wear a mask around anyone you don\u2019t live with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe main purpose of cloth face coverings is to decrease the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 [COVID-19] from infected people who may be infectious but do not have clinical symptoms of the virus or who may have early or mild symptoms that they do not recognize,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drravinakullar.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ravina Kullar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Pharm.D., MPH, a fellow and spokesperson of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idsociety.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infectious Diseases Society of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cHowever, the CDC also states that face coverings can also offer some protection against getting exposed again to the coronavirus. We still do not know if a person can get reinfected again yet.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 40% of coronavirus infections in the United States are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/planning-scenarios.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asymptomatic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can also be pre-symptomatic, or, if there\u2019s been a significant amount of time since getting tested and receiving a negative test, you could have contracted the virus in that time frame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best face masks for coronavirus protection<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are plenty of reusable masks to choose from, from colorful cloth masks online to fashionable ones from your favorite designer. The best face mask has multiple layers of fabric (cotton masks are best) and fits well over the wearer\u2019s nose, mouth, and chin. Some masks come with pockets for disposable filters. The clear winner was a <\/span><b>cloth mask<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made of two layers of quilting cotton, which stopped the droplets at around 2.5 inches. A <\/span><b>disposable mask<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (in this case, a CVS Cone Face Mask made of various fibers) kept the droplets from traveling farther than 8 inches.\u00a0 Finally, the folded <\/span><b>handkerchief<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>bandana<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were better than nothing, but not by much.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cImportantly, uncovered emulated coughs were able to travel notably farther than the currently recommended 6-foot distancing guideline,\u201d the study concludes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14684 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Droplet-jet-distance-chart.png\" alt=\"Best face mask for coronavirus protection: Respiratory droplet jet distance chart\" width=\"768\" height=\"762\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Droplet-jet-distance-chart.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Droplet-jet-distance-chart-300x298.png 300w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Droplet-jet-distance-chart-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/15459624.2013.877591\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evaluated the protection of <\/span><b>face shields<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> versus face masks. Although the face shields intercepted some droplets traveling toward the face, other droplets were still able to travel around the shield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>N95 respirators<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and similar medical-grade masks should only be used by frontline medical professionals, who are still in dire need of personal protective equipment (PPE).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cN95s have to be fitted to work correctly, and you cannot wear them for a prolonged period of time, so this isn\u2019t something that we recommend, people just wearing when they\u2019re out in the community,\u201d says infectious disease expert <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AmeshAA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amesh Adalja<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security. \u201cWe also want to make sure that we have enough N95s for healthcare workers\u2014so you might be able to find them for sale, but it\u2019s not something that we recommend people buy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking extra precautions is admirable, but the general public doesn\u2019t need a medical face mask to hit the grocery store; a cotton face mask is fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who should wear face coverings?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/cloth-face-cover-guidance.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, everyone should wear a face covering in public settings. There are a few groups excluded from this recommendation:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children younger than 2 years old<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who has trouble breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anyone who is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the cloth face covering without assistance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who have trouble breathing, Dr. Kullar says that \u201calternative options can be used, such as a face shield.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the laws around face masks and coronavirus?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mask laws are different in every state and even between cities. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/masks4all.co\/what-states-require-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#Masks4All<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crunched the numbers, and almost all of the states have at least some guidelines in place, with a growing number mandating them in public to one extent or another. The penalties for not wearing a mask differ by area, but could include a fine or a summons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Businesses can be fined if they\u2019re not in compliance with local regulations. They may <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.natlawreview.com\/article\/no-mask-no-service-ada-considerations-business-owners-requiring-face-masks-retail\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">refuse service<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to customers who aren\u2019t wearing masks, or ask them to put one on before entering their business, even where masks aren\u2019t mandated by law.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to make face masks at home<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-to-make-cloth-face-covering.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides instructions for making two kinds of cloth face masks: no-sew and regular.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No-sew face masks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need 20&#215;20 inch piece of cotton cloth (from a scarf, bandana, towel, or T-shirt) and rubber bands or hair ties. (You can also watch video steps <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tPx1yqvJgf4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fold the fabric in half<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fold the top down and the bottom up to meet in the middle.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put the rubber bands about 6 inches apart on the cloth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fold the ends of the cloth into the middle and tuck them in the rubber bands to make ear loops.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14682 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home_1-660x1024.png\" alt=\"How to make a face mask at home instructions\" width=\"604\" height=\"937\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home_1-660x1024.png 660w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home_1-193x300.png 193w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home_1.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular cloth face mask<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to a sewing machine, you\u2019ll also need two rectangles of cotton fabric, measuring 10&#215;6 inches each; two 6-inch piece of elastic or something similar; a needle and thread; and scissors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-to-make-cloth-face-covering.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC\u2019s instructions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are as follows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put the pieces of cotton on top of each other.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fold over the long sides \u00bc inch and hem. Then fold the double layer of fabric over \u00bd inch along the short sides and stitch down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run a 6-inch length of 1\/8-inch wide elastic through the wider hem on each side of the mask. These will be the ear loops. Use a large needle or a bobby pin to thread it through. Tie the ends tight. (You can substitute ponytail holders, strips of cloth, or headbands to create ear loops.)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gently pull on the elastic so that the knots are tucked inside the hem. Gather the sides of the mask on the elastic and adjust so the mask fits your face. Then securely stitch the elastic in place to keep it from slipping.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-14683 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home-609x1024.png\" alt=\"How to sew a cloth face mask\" width=\"604\" height=\"1016\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home-609x1024.png 609w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home-178x300.png 178w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/How_to_make_a_face_mask_at_home.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 604px) 100vw, 604px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long can you wear a disposable mask for?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping your masks clean is essential to stopping the spread of COVID-19, so only use your mask once before washing it or throwing it away if disposable. Consider your mask\u2014especially the front and filter\u2014to be contaminated after every use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kullar recommends the following method of removing a mask and therefore reducing your risk of exposure:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before touching the mask.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid touching the front of the mask as it is contaminated.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only touch the ear loops\/ties\/band.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hold both of the ear loops and gently lift and remove the mask.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash and dry hands thoroughly.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tips for cleaning masks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a washable mask, you can toss your masks in with the rest of your laundry and run it on the hottest setting. If you don\u2019t have access to a washing machine, don\u2019t fret. You can wash your mask by hand using hot water and soap, then letting it air dry. (The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/prevent-getting-sick\/how-to-wash-cloth-face-coverings.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has information on how to mix bleach and water together for a good mask soak.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your mask no longer fits your face and there are gaps between the cloth and your chin, cheeks, or nose, it\u2019s time to replace it. This is especially important because it makes it all too tempting to touch your face to readjust your mask.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf we could get everybody to wear a mask right now I think in four, six, eight weeks we could bring this epidemic under control,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/07\/14\/cdc-says-us-could-get-coronavirus-under-control-in-one-to-two-months-if-everyone-wears-a-mask.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Redfield<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, the director of the CDC.\u00a0 Wearing a mask may add a few extra steps to your day and feel inconvenient, but it\u2019s a small effort for such a big pay-off.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wearing a face mask is one of the most important precautions you can take to prevent the transmission of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.
