Time to kick back and enjoy a glass of wine, but you start to wonder if that\u2019s safe to do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You likely know that there are many medications that can&#8217;t be mixed with alcohol\u2014but what about drinking after you\u2019ve been immunized?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good news: The Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA) label information for various <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/savings-vaccines-for-children-teens-seniors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not list alcohol as a contraindication. However, while drinking might not be harmful after most vaccines, there are still a few reasons to avoid drinking excess alcohol after you receive a shot. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is drinking after vaccinations safe?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally, alcohol does not interact with vaccines. However, it\u2019s still a good idea to avoid excessive alcohol consumption after a vaccine. Too much alcohol can mask the vaccine\u2019s side effects, and you won\u2019t know if the vaccine or the alcohol is causing a reaction. For example, alcohol can cause headaches, but so can many vaccines, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/shingrix\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shingrix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the brand-name vaccine that prevents shingles (herpes zoster). Over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=0280849d-5c78-4a9d-8941-4eab429f6bd8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50% of adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aged 50-59 experienced headaches from Shingrix in clinical trials.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to health officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/moderate-drinking.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moderate alcohol <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consumption is defined as one drink or less per day for women and two drinks per day or less for men. Drinking too much alcohol on a regular basis can inhibit your immune system and affect your body\u2019s ability to fight infection. According to the CDC, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/alcohol\/fact-sheets\/alcohol-use.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excess alcohol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (15 or more drinks weekly for men, eight or more drinks weekly for women) can suppress your immune system, which increases your risk of getting sick.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you decide to have a couple of drinks after your vaccine, drink in moderation, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myvivaa.com\/dr-ramandeep-sidhu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramandeep Sidhu, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a board-certified vascular surgeon and founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myvivaa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VIVAA-Vein Vascular Primary Care &amp; Aesthetic Associates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Issaquah, Washington. He says excessive drinking over an extended time can weaken your immune system to the point where the vaccine won\u2019t function as well as it usually would.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou should refrain from drinking heavily, especially during the first two weeks [after receiving the shot], to maintain your immune system,\u201d Dr. Sidhu says. Drinking too much alcohol and becoming intoxicated can impair the immune system so that the vaccine doesn\u2019t work as well as it normally would.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always double-check with your healthcare provider because they are familiar with your specific medical history and condition(s) as well as any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications you take<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that may also potentially interact with alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Can alcohol alter the effectiveness of a vaccine?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While alcohol is not contraindicated with vaccines per se, you may be concerned it could affect how effective the vaccine is. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4245072\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that while excess alcohol consumption is harmful to the body\u2019s immune system, moderate drinking (up to one alcoholic beverage a day for women and up to two alcoholic beverages a day for men) could possibly boost the immune system. However, this is still a poorly understood phenomenon, and individuals vary greatly\u2014for example, a patient with a history of alcohol abuse should not attempt to use alcohol as an immune system booster. And according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dietaryguidelines.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-12\/Dietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Americans by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, if you don\u2019t already drink, it\u2019s not recommended that you start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From a health perspective, not drinking at all is best. Remember, although a vaccine does not technically interact with alcohol, you should check with your healthcare provider before drinking alcohol before or after your vaccine. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Flu shot<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you have the flu shot and alcohol, too? But according to data from one small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21617300\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, scientific evidence showed participants who drank alcohol regularly experienced more adverse effects after the vaccination, including fatigue, pain at the injection site, and body aches.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Shingles vaccine<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What about the shingles vaccines and liquor? Shingrix and alcohol do not interact. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zostavax\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zostavax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is another (less common) shingles injection; it is also safe with alcohol. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccines\/vpd\/shingles\/public\/shingrix\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of both shingles vaccines include injection site redness, swelling, pain, warmth, headache, and fatigue. As with other types of vaccinations, alcohol can make vaccine side effects worse.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Tetanus shot<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you drink after a tetanus shot? The tetanus shot is typically given to adults combined with diphtheria and pertussis, referred to as Tdap. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccinesafety\/vaccines\/pneumococcal-vaccine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">these vaccines can cause<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drowsiness, fever, loss of appetite, headache, and injection site soreness\/redness, side effects that may be worsened by heavy alcohol consumption.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Typhoid vaccine<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The oral typhoid vaccine (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/vivotif\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vivotif<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) should be taken on an empty stomach\u2014meaning no food or alcohol\u2014but you can safely drink alcohol later on. Can you drink after getting your COVID-19 vaccination or boosters? Both of the two-dose vaccines, the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=e0651c7a-2fe2-459d-a766-0d59e919f058\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moderna COVID-19 vaccine<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=908ecbe7-2f1b-42dd-94bf-f917ec3c5af8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pfizer BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>, contain drug label information that does not mention an interaction with alcohol. However, some people report side effects of these vaccines, like fever, chills, and headache\u2014and alcohol could potentially worsen these symptoms.
