Technology (such as video chats and conference calls) makes it easy to stay connected, but it can also feel unnatural and awkward when it\u2019s replacing in-person contact. For some, the pressure to \u201cperform\u201d socially or in a work setting via video conference can lead to feelings of burnout, fatigue, and even Zoom anxiety.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is it about Zoom that can lead to feelings of anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom, Google Hangouts, FaceTime\u2014video conferences have become an essential tool for those working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic. They\u2019re also being used for teaching, socializing, and as a way for us to virtually attend events such as weddings, birthdays, and even funerals. Many healthcare providers have encouraged <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/telehealth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">telehealth appointments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too. All of this online interaction, however, can have a downside.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video calls require a lot more focus than a face-to-face conversation,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.psychiatristnyc.com\/about\/the-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zlatin Ivanov<\/span><\/a><b>, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MD, a New York City\u2013based psychiatrist.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need a lot more energy to process non-verbal cues like facial expressions, the tone and pitch of the voice, and body language; paying more attention to these consumes a lot of energy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is energy that we may already be lacking, due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-isolation-mental-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added mental stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that can come with a pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur anxiety rises when we have to focus on five people at the same time at once in gallery view,\u201d Dr. Ivanov says. \u201cSometimes, it is more difficult to understand your colleagues, friends, affiliates due to connectivity issues or accent. Another reason to feel anxious is that we quickly had to get familiar and even proficient with a number of different video call platforms\u2014 Zoom, GoToMeeting, Skype, etc.\u201d In other words, the dreaded technical difficulties can add additional concern on top of social worries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, it is also common to worry about how you are perceived on a webcam, or to stress over being \u201cphotogenic.\u201d Many people are staring at their faces on screens many more times than they would ever look in the mirror a day\u2014and that can bring up self-esteem issues about appearance.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is most commonly affected by video conference anxiety?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID-19 pandemic can affect more than your physical health. It also impacts your mental health when you experience feelings of stress and anxiety caused by social distancing and isolation. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6104450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that long term isolation stress to be a \u201cmajor risk factor for neuropsychiatric disorders such as depressive and anxiety disorders.\u201d Zoom chats and video conferencing can help to alleviate feelings of loneliness, but it may increase anxiety in some people as well. Those who are most commonly affected by Zoom anxiety may include people who are unfamiliar with the technology, as well as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/anxiety-statistics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 million adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 who live with various forms of social anxiety.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who struggle with technology<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newfrontierspsychiatry.com\/hong-yin-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hong Yin, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Wisconsin-based psychiatrist at New Frontiers Psychiatric &amp; TMS, \u201cthose who may not be as familiar with using technology on a regular basis tend to be the most impacted.\u201d It can feel overwhelming for many to adopt a new form of technological communication. \u201cChange, in general, can be anxiety-provoking as it is more of an unknown versus something we are familiar with and have an idea of how it has gone before,\u201d Dr. Yin says. \u201cWe like feeling confident and capable and stepping outside our comfort zone can temporarily destabilize that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with existing anxiety disorders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video conferencing can also be challenging for those who already struggle with various forms of anxiety. \u201cAnother population is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/living-with-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who either have a form of anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (especially social anxiety) or have some features that predispose them to it,\u201d Dr. Yin says. \u201cThey include individuals that tend to overthink, especially about things that can go wrong but are not symptomatic enough to meet the criteria for a formal anxiety disorder.\u201d This can also affect people who live with body dysmorphic disorder, depression, and other mental health conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, Dr. Yin notes that when it comes to Zoom anxiety, \u201cThere does tend to be more of a thread\/pattern of feeling self-conscious whether it is about appearance or perceived lower ability to learn the technology.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can we make Zoom less awkward and anxiety provoking?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news about Zoom anxiety is that there are some simple steps you can take to combat it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Schedule breaks<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe first thing to do is to examine carefully your routines and carve out the times for breaks from meetings during the day and the times you plug off,\u201d says Dr. Ivanov. Taking breaks from staring at a screen not only prevents Zoom burnout, but it\u2019s also important for our physical and mental health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen making your schedule, don\u2019t book your appointments back to back\u2014allow some time in between so you can \u2018breathe,\u2019 readjust and prepare for the next one,\u201d recommends Dr. Ivanov. \u201cGet up from your chair, stretch, water your plants, pet your dog or cat. Give your brain a chance to switch gears between meetings.\u201d It\u2019s also perfectly reasonable to turn off your camera for a few minutes during a meeting, if you need to.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Share your worries<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Yin recommends \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talking to other people who have tried it and were also anxious about it\u201d because as she points out, \u201cyou&#8217;ll realize you&#8217;re not alone and many have a similar experience of the anticipatory anxiety and relief and reassurance that comes with completing your first successful conference.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-is-teletherapy\/\"><b>What is teletherapy?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Get training<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you feel insecure about your ability to navigate this form of communication, ask for help. Your company may offer some training videos, or a phone call with a Zoom representative who can explain how to use the platform. When you feel confident in your ability to use the program, your stress will start to recede.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Set boundaries<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Dr. Yin says that it is perfectly fine to mention your Zoom preferences to your colleagues, such as using the audio feature without the video. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">99\/100 times the audio is all you need unless you&#8217;re the presenter, host, or you&#8217;re showing visuals to all participants, so those individuals who are more attending don&#8217;t need to have their cameras on,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom video conferences have become a valuable tool during these times of social distancing, but it\u2019s important to remember that we are not going to have to rely on them forever.
