However, you might be doing it wrong\u2026 or at least not nearly as often as you should. Here\u2019s what you need to know about when to wash your hands, how to wash your hands properly,\u00a0 and when you can substitute hand sanitizer for soap and water.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the numbers: Why handwashing is important<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial and viral illnesses spread in a variety of ways, but transmission primarily happens through contact with contaminated surfaces or by breathing in infected respiratory droplets. Some illnesses are also spread through food, fecal matter, contaminated water sources, or open wounds on the skin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the biggest source of transmission by far is contact: when you touch a surface contaminated with viral particles or bacteria and then touch your eyes, nose, or mouth, you give germs an opportunity to enter your body in a way that can make you sick. And most of the common surfaces we touch every day\u2014like cell phones, doorknobs, communal chairs and tables, subway railings\u2014are basically giant petri dishes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 80% of infections are spread by hands, says Tasneem Malik, MD, a primary care physician at Mercy Medical Center. This includes GI infections, like salmonella and norovirus, and respiratory infections, like the common cold, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-prevent-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and coronavirus disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Community education efforts around handwashing can reduce the amount of viral diarrhea cases by 23% to 40% and the number of respiratory illnesses by 16% to 21%, per the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/handwashing\/why-handwashing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many perfectly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy people are carriers of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staphylococcus aureus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is often responsible for severe skin infections like the antibiotic-resistant MRSA.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/today.yougov.com\/topics\/lifestyle\/articles-reports\/2020\/01\/30\/hand-washing-soap-poll-survey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 YouGov poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that as many as 40% of Americans don\u2019t regularly wash their hands with soap and water after using the bathroom at home.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent handwashing may help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/handwashing\/why-handwashing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent antibiotic overuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and resistance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without frequent handwashing, it\u2019s pretty easy to swap germs with someone who has just changed a diaper or used a bathroom without washing up afterward. (Gross, we know&#8230;but it\u2019s the truth!) Luckily, handwashing can go a long way toward keeping you healthy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When to wash your hands<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know how important it is to wash up, it\u2019s time to talk frequency: Just how often should you be washing your hands to prevent illness?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The short answer? <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequently<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Susan Besser, MD, a primary care physician with Mercy Personal Physicians at Overlea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere really isn\u2019t a set amount, but [you should wash your hands] anytime you touch a potentially contaminated surface, use the restroom, before eating, or if you blow your nose or sneeze or cough into your hand,\u201d Dr. Besser explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Need more info? Here are a few other scenarios that call for soap and water:<\/span><\/p>\n<table class=\" singlecare-table\">\n<tbody>\n<tr class=\"header-row\">\n<td><b>You should wash your hands if you&#8230;<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;have changed a diaper<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;are about to prepare a meal<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;are caring for a sick person at home or work<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;before and after disinfecting a wound<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;after taking out the trash<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;after touching animal waste (i.e., changing your cat\u2019s litter box or picking up your dog\u2019s poop)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;after touching pet food or pet treats, which can be contaminated with bacteria like salmonella<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>&#8230;before touching your face to scratch an itch, apply makeup, or insert contact lenses<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to wash your hands properly<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready to get down to business? Here\u2019s how to wash hands effectively\u2014you\u2019re going for \u201cdoctor preparing for surgery\u201d here, not \u201ctoddler rinsing their hands for three seconds with warm water,\u201d especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Wet hands with clean water. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contrary to popular belief, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/coronavirus\/everything-you-need-know-about-washing-your-hands-protect-against-coronavirus-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">water does not have to be warm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the important things here are the soap and the scrubbing, not the temperature of the water.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Dispense enough soap to cover the surface of your hands. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to use soap that\u2019s labeled antibacterial. While these certainly get the job done, there\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/people\/handhygiene\/how\/bestsoap.html#:~:text=There%20is%20no%20evidence%20that,otherwise%20instructed%20by%20your%20doctor).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no evidence that they work better<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than regular soap. When used properly, regular soap is in fact \u201cantibacterial\u201d since it is effective in ridding the hands of bacteria and other virus-causing germs.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Start scrubbing:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Make sure you rub your palms together, use alternating palms to lather the backs of your hands up to your wrists, interlace your fingers and scrub in between each one, use alternating palms to rub each one of your thumbs, and scrub the tops and edges of your fingernails in each opposing hand. It\u2019s important to apply soap to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">every part of your hands, fingers, and thumbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including all the hard-to-reach nooks and crannies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How long do you need to wash your hands? <\/span><b>At least 20 seconds.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> An easy trick is to sing \u201cHappy Birthday\u201d to yourself twice in a row.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re done, <\/span><b>rinse the soap off your hands with water and thoroughly dry hands <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with a clean paper towel. In public places, paper towels are preferred over air dryers, since the towel is more effective in drying hands completely, and the manual action of rubbing your hands on the paper towel is another protective layer of ridding them of unwanted germs. At home, clean cloth towels are okay but should be laundered frequently, especially if shared by family members or guests. Paper towels are always the best option.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in public, <\/span><b>use the paper towel to turn off the faucet<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; otherwise, you risk re-contaminating your clean hands. If possible, use a paper towel to open the bathroom door handle as you leave (and discard of it ASAP).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-15060\" src=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Blog_embed_090220_how_to_wash_your_hands-538x1024.png\" alt=\"How to wash your hands infographic\" width=\"538\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Blog_embed_090220_how_to_wash_your_hands-538x1024.png 538w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Blog_embed_090220_how_to_wash_your_hands-158x300.png 158w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Blog_embed_090220_how_to_wash_your_hands-768x1462.png 768w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Blog_embed_090220_how_to_wash_your_hands-807x1536.png 807w, https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Blog_embed_090220_how_to_wash_your_hands.png 1050w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you wash your hands for too long?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technically, you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wash your hands for too long\u2014but this warning has more to do with dry skin than with the germ-killing effects of washing hands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToo much washing will damage the skin, which could cause the skin to crack and leave it open to injury or superficial skin infections,\u201d Dr. Besser explains. It can strip your body of natural oils, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/articles\/17474-hand-washing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">good bacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you need to fight germs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While nobody wants to contract a skin infection because they\u2019ve washed their hands too aggressively, Kierstin Kennedy, MD, chief of hospital medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, says avoiding this side effect is relatively easy: use a moisturizing hand cream in between washes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would always err on the side of washing more often and longer over a quick wash that may not adequately remove all of the germs,\u201d she advises.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hand sanitizer vs. handwashing<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Got dirty hands&#8230;but no soap and water? In many cases, hand sanitizer can perform in a pinch, especially if the alternative is zero washing or sanitizing at all. It\u2019s a good idea to use hand sanitizer when you\u2019re out shopping, entering or leaving a healthcare setting (like your doctor\u2019s office), or sitting down at a restaurant to eat.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, pulling out the travel-size bottle of hand sanitizer shouldn\u2019t be your <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choice if a traditional sink is nearby.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHand sanitizer can replace handwashing with soap and water if (and, ideally, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if) washing with soap and water is not an option,\u201d Dr. Kennedy says. \u201cIf you ever have an opportunity to wash with good old-fashioned soap and water, take advantage!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why? Although hand sanitizer is a convenient tool in the fight against illness\u2014one we would all probably be a lot sicker without!\u2014it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hand-sanitizer-kill-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can\u2019t quite achieve the same results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the proper handwashing technique above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHand sanitizers do not get rid of all types of germs,\u201d says Dr. Malik, \u201cand they\u2019re not as effective when hands are dirty or greasy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/does-hand-sanitizer-expire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best practices for substituting hand sanitizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a regular handwashing:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your hands are visibly soiled, you need a sink\u2014not a bottle of Purell. Hand sanitizer can\u2019t remove dirt, grease, fecal matter, or other substances from your skin. If you\u2019ve helped your child blow his nose and got mucus on your hand, you need to use soap and water.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use a sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, says Dr. Malik. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-updates-hand-sanitizers-consumers-should-not-use\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid hand sanitizers containing the ingredient methanol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been flagged by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as potentially harmful in certain amounts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same rules for handwashing apply to using hand sanitizer: \u201cRub it in for 20 seconds and cover the same surfaces of your hands as you would if you were washing with soap and water,\u201d Dr. Kennedy advises.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t need to wash your hands before or after using hand sanitizer (unless your hands are visibly dirty). Doing both is usually redundant. Once the sanitizer has dried on your skin, it\u2019s safe to eat, drink, touch your face, or do anything else you normally would after handwashing.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Handwashing is one of the best and easiest ways to prevent all kinds of infections, from seasonal colds and flus to COVID-19.
