Pregnant women may experience a variety of symptoms from breast tenderness and leg cramps in their first and second trimester to Braxton Hicks contractions in the third, and chances are at some point they\u2019ll be reaching into the medicine cabinet for some pain relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/safe-medication-during-pregnancy\/\"><b>What medications are safe to take during pregnancy?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to take pain medications while pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking pain medicine while pregnant can be cause for uncertainty, but it\u2019s also a commonly reported medication taken during pregnancy. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/meds\/treatingfortwo\/facts.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), 9 out of 10 pregnant women reported taking pain medication during pregnancy. The CDC does caution women who are pregnant, or trying to conceive, against using specific pain medications and recommends that patients consult with their medical health provider prior to taking any medications or supplements while pregnant. But that doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re out of pain options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which pain medications are best to take during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The shortest answer is: take Tylenol while pregnant, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen or other NSAIDs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-tylenol-an-nsaid\/\"><b>Is Tylenol an NSAID?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol while pregnant: Safe<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAcetaminophen, such as Tylenol, is the safest option to take during pregnancy; however, take as little of it as possible for the shortest course,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/drsomamandal.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified internist at Summit Medical Group in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWomen who took acetaminophen were less likely to have birth defects,\u201d Dr. Mandal says of the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While acetaminophen may be the drug of choice when looking for pain relief while pregnant, it\u2019s still important to read the labels every time you purchase medication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAvoid combination medications, so you do not end up taking an unnecessary medication or a dangerous medication,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hgpharmacist.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danielle Plummer<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pharm.D., the founder of HG Pharmacist. \u201cFor example, Excedrin has not only acetaminophen but also aspirin and caffeine, so avoid it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get acetaminophen coupon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen while pregnant: Not safe<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC cautions against pregnant women taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)\u2014which includes ibuprofen, as well as opioids during pregnancy\u2014after a study was conducted that linked these types of pain medications with an increase in birth defects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show that use of NSAIDs increase the chance of spontaneous miscarriage, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC175811\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stating that prenatal use of NSAIDs increased the chance of miscarriage by 80%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drs. Plummer and Mandal both warn that ibuprofen may be the more popular NSAID, but there are many other pain medications that should be avoided during pregnancy. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ibuprofen (Advil)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspirin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naproxen (Aleve)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diclofenac (Voltaren)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Codeine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morphine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxycodone<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/ibuprofen-vs-tylenol\/\"><b>Acetaminophen vs. ibuprofen<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are some alternative pain relief options during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the type and location of the pain, I recommend to start by using ice or alternating ice and heat,\u201d says Dr. Plummer, who cautions that you don\u2019t put the ice directly on the skin. She recommends wrapping an ice pack in a towel, or using a bag of frozen peas or a product specifically designed for pain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other alternatives that Dr. Plummer recommends include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Topical relief creams and oils (but avoid products with menthol)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Epsom salt bath, but don\u2019t overheat the water<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Massage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chiropractor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body pillows<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your quality of life is affected, and the natural solutions aren\u2019t cutting it, then acetaminophen is an acceptable pain relief option during pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"cta-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get Tylenol coupon<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always talk to your healthcare provider before taking medication while pregnant.
