Many people are rolling up their sleeves for a flu shot, hoping to protect themselves against seasonal influenza. And this year, many are also getting vaccinated, or boosted, against COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while many are holding out hope for effective COVID treatments, like Merck\u2019s oral antiviral COVID-19 drug <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/molnupiravir-covid-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">molnupiravir<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Pfizer\u2019s Paxlovid, your best bet at this point is to take advantage of the opportunities you already have. Experts recommend getting both a flu shot and a COVID vaccine as soon as you can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the flu shot help with COVID?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu vaccine is only intended to guard against influenza. So getting a flu shot won\u2019t protect you from COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But protection against influenza is no small matter. About <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/burden\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">28,000 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> died from the flu during the 2018-2019 flu season and as many as 380,000 had to be hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And while last year\u2019s flu activity was lower because people were staying home and social distancing during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, health experts caution that we\u2019re likely to see a rebound in flu activity with many more flu cases this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMasking and social distancing kept the flu at bay last season. However, as people return to in-person activities and children return to school, we expect the flu to return,\u201d says Shoshana Fishbein, MPH, the communications director for the nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familiesfightingflu.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families Fighting Flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIn fact, flu activity is already higher this season than it was last year. Because there was virtually no person-to-person flu infection last year, a portion of the population that either has not been vaccinated or experienced an exposure will likely have little immunity to the virus, which could lead to increased flu illnesses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while the flu shot won\u2019t protect you against COVID-19, it can reduce your chances of contracting the flu. That\u2019s no small matter, either. \u201cIt\u2019s possible to get sick with both viruses at the same time,\u201d notes Debra A. Maitre, DNP, APRN-CNS, a medical adviser for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.familiesfightingflu.org\/medical-advisors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Families Fighting Flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cVaccinating against the flu can help protect a vulnerable immune system from also catching COVID-19 at the same time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu shot and COVID vaccines: Can I get both?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get both vaccines, and you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get both\u2014unless your healthcare provider advises you otherwise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPrevention is still the best treatment,\u201d says David Cutler, MD, a family medicine physician at Providence Saint John\u2019s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. \u201cAnd vaccines against both COVID and flu are excellent ways to prevent infection.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes, you do need both, experts say. \u201cIt\u2019s important for people to know that the flu is caused by a different virus than COVID and therefore you need separate vaccinations,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.faculty.uci.edu\/profile.cfm?faculty_id=6052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Karen Edwards<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PhD, MS, professor and chair of the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, Irvine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A seasonal flu vaccine can help you either avoid getting the flu or reduce the severity of the illness if you do get the flu. The seasonal flu vaccine is not 100% effective, but experts generally recommend that everyone 6 months and older get vaccinated, especially if they\u2019re at high risk for serious complications from the flu. For example, if you have allergies or asthma, you\u2019re at greater risk for bad outcomes from the flu, so you may want to prioritize getting a flu shot sooner rather than later.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two kinds of flu vaccine: the shot and the nasal mist. Which type of flu vaccine should you choose? Almost everyone can get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the flu shot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with certain rare exceptions, such as people with allergies to the vaccine or any of its components. However, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/whoshouldvax.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional exceptions when it comes to the nasal spray vaccine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including pregnant women, immunosuppressed people, people 50 years and older, and children under 2.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, you currently have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/different-vaccines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three options<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.S. when it comes to a COVID-19 vaccine: the Pfizer-BioNTech mRNA vaccine, the Moderna mRNA vaccine, and Johnson &amp; Johnson&#8217;s Janssen, which is a viral vector vaccine. According to the CDC, the vaccines are even safe for people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/people-with-medical-conditions.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many underlying medical conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014and in fact, since those people tend to be at increased risk for severe illness when it comes to COVID-19, the CDC recommends that they get vaccinated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, people at a higher risk, which includes people who are immunocompromised, adults age 65 and older, and people who live or work in high-risk settings, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/releases\/2021\/p1021-covid-booster.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are also eligible for COVID booster shots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (6 months or more after they have been fully vaccinated with two doses of an mRNA vaccine or one shot of the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to worry about spacing out the flu and COVID vaccines, either. You can get a COVID-19 booster and a flu shot at the same time, if it\u2019s convenient for you.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-reactions\/\"><b>Flu shot side effects<\/b><\/a><b> | <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/covid-booster-shot\/\"><b>COVID booster shot FAQs<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Tamiflu help with coronavirus?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many doctors will suggest that you take a prescription antiviral drug like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tamiflu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tamiflu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (oseltamivir) to recover more quickly from the flu. When taken within 48 hours of the onset of flu symptoms, Tamiflu can be effective in reducing your illness by a day or so. Tamiflu, which inhibits the ability of the virus to make copies of it itself, has approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of both influenza A and B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another antiviral option is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xofluza-80-mg-dose\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xofluza<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/treatment\/baloxavir-marboxil.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">baloxavir marboxil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). It\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-approves-new-drug-treat-influenza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approved by the FDA for use within 48 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the onset of flu symptoms, and to prevent the flu <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-expands-approval-influenza-treatment-post-exposure-prevention\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after exposure to the virus.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these meds can help you recover from the flu, currently there\u2019s no research to indicate that taking Tamiflu will also work against COVID-19 infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I take to reduce symptoms of COVID-19?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you develop a fever and other flu-like symptoms, don\u2019t ignore them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStay home and if your symptoms worsen, you should consult with your healthcare provider,\u201d Dr. Edwards says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you call your doctor, ask for guidance. You might just have the flu, but you could be infected with COVID-19. The two illnesses have many of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-symptoms-vs-cold-and-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as fever, fatigue, a cough, sore throat, body aches, and headache. Your doctor can run tests to determine if you have the flu or COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your flu test comes back positive, and you\u2019re within the 48-hour window, you may be able to start taking Tamiflu. You may also be able to take an over-the-counter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-cold-medicine-interactions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold-and-flu med<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to help temporarily relieve some of your symptoms. If your COVID test turns out positive, your doctor can go over the instructions for quarantining yourself while you\u2019re contagious and how to care for yourself while you recover.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soon, you might also have access to new COVID-19 treatments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the new COVID pill called molnupiravir is still considered an investigational new drug, and is not yet approved by the FDA. But pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merck.com\/news\/merck-and-ridgebacks-investigational-oral-antiviral-molnupiravir-reduced-the-risk-of-hospitalization-or-death-by-approximately-50-percent-compared-to-placebo-for-patients-with-mild-or-moderat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this antiviral medication significantly reduced the rates of death and hospitalization in adults with mild to moderate COVID in an interim analysis during a Phase 3 clinical trial. In fact, regulators in the U.K. approved the use of molnupiravir in early November, and approval might not be far behind in the U.S. Merck submitted an application to the FDA in mid-October for an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merck.com\/news\/merck-and-ridgeback-announce-submission-of-emergency-use-authorization-application-to-the-u-s-fda-for-molnupiravir-an-investigational-oral-antiviral-medicine-for-the-treatment-of-mild-to-moderate-c\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency use authorization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and has announced an agreement to provide 1.7 million doses to the U.S. government upon approval of the EUA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pfizer also announced promising results from its own experimental antiviral COVID drug, Paxlovid, and the company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-seeks-emergency-use-authorization-novel-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submitted an application for an EUA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Nov. 16.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One more thing: Watch out for products that promise more than they might deliver. \u201cMany treatments for colds, flu, and COVID have been promoted without adequate investigation, authorization, approval or recommendation,\u201d Dr. Cutler cautions. \u201cThese include many vitamins, supplements, and prescription drugs used for other purposes.\u201d Consult a trusted medical authority before you open your wallet.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to prevent getting sick this flu season<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The influenza vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccines aren\u2019t your only tools to ward off illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe saw last season that masks and social distancing kept the flu at bay, and those practices can still be used when entering large public spaces like schools and grocery stores,\u201d says Maitre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, avoiding public spaces that are crowded and staying away from people who are already sick may also help you reduce your risk of getting ill with either the flu or COVID-19.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another key tool: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-wash-your-hands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handwashing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will also help prevent transmission of the flu, COVID, and other respiratory illnesses. And when you don\u2019t have access to soap and water, you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/hand-sanitizer-kill-the-flu\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use a hand sanitizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s at least 60% ethanol alcohol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
