Despite working in daycare, I had never heard of it. It turned out I was immune from a past infection\u2014even though I (nor my parents) never knew I had it as a child.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifth disease is very common in children, and usually mild, but in rare circumstances, it can cause complications. So, it\u2019s important to know the signs of fifth disease\u2014and what to do if you think your child has it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fifthdisease\">What is fifth disease?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u200b\u200bFifth disease, also called erythema infectiosum, is a common and usually mild illness in childhood. It\u2019s called fifth disease because it\u2019s number five in a historical list of childhood rash illnesses (the other four being measles, rubella, chicken pox, and roseola).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by a human parvovirus B19 infection. \u201cMost children are exposed and develop antibodies to parvovirus B19,\u201d says Leann Poston, MD, a medical contributor for Ikon Health.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifth disease is contagious to both children and adults, but it is more common in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/fifth-disease-and-pregnancy.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children ages 5 to 15<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Adults who have not had a previous fifth disease infection and who<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/why-kids-get-sick-at-school\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work with children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (such as child care providers and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/school-nurses-chronic-conditions\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teachers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are also at a higher risk of catching it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does a child get fifth disease?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifth disease spreads through droplets of an infected person (from speaking, sneezing, coughing, saliva, etc.). It can also be transmitted through blood, including from mother to fetus. Serious complications do not occur in most pregnancies affected by fifth disease, and fetal death from fifth disease is rare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifth disease can be contracted or spread at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-keep-your-kids-healthy-all-year-long\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any time of year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but outbreaks tend to be more common in<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/skin\/Pages\/Fifth-Disease-Parvovirus-B19.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">winter and spring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fifth disease is usually not serious. \u201cMany people with fifth disease are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drsomamandal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD and board certified internist at<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitmedicalgroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit Medical Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cMost people recover in a few weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because fifth disease can affect<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/fifth-disease-and-pregnancy.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how the body makes red blood cells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it can be serious for people with a compromised immune system, such as people with HIV or leukemia, or for people who have types of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sickle-cell-disease\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sickle cell disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like sickle cell anemia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms\">Fifth disease symptoms<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After contracting fifth disease, the incubation period is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parvovirusb19\/fifth-disease.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about two weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> before symptoms appear. It is most contagious during the first stage when cold-like symptoms are present, before the skin rash appears. Once the rash appears, most people are no longer contagious and can<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/back-to-school-health-tips\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go to school<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, daycare, or work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial symptoms of fifth disease<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/fifth-disease-and-pregnancy.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cold-like symptoms that last for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/skin\/Pages\/Fifth-Disease-Parvovirus-B19.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seven to 10 days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swollen glands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diarrhea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As those symptoms begin to fade, the fifth disease rash develops. The characteristics <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parvovirusb19\/fifth-disease.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>A bright red rash on the face<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that looks like a \u201cslapped cheek\u201d (more common in children than adults).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>A body rash<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that begins on the torso then moves to the arms, buttocks, and legs. This comes after the face rash. It often appears lacelike. It is slightly raised and can be itchy, particularly if it appears on the soles of the feet. As it fades, it may take on a lacelike appearance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe rash may come and go for weeks, but usually lasts one to two weeks,\u201d Dr. Poston says. It can briefly reappear weeks or months later when the child becomes hot while bathing, exercising, or spending time in the sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>An important note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Descriptions of rashes are usually characterized by how they look on light skin. Skin conditions may look<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/brownskinmatters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different on darker skin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Photos of skin rashes available both online and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2019\/11\/04\/774910915\/diagnostic-gaps-skin-comes-in-many-shades-and-so-do-rashes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in medical schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to show the rash on light skin. More research and resources are needed to help parents and healthcare professionals recognize what these rashes look like on darker skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/minority-health-questions-to-ask-a-doctor-bipoc\/\"><b>9 question to ask a doctor if you\u2019re BIPOC<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Some people also experience <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parvovirusb19\/fifth-disease.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>joint pain<\/b><\/a><b> and swelling<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, called polyarthropathy syndrome. This symptom is more common in women, older teens, and adults (may be the only symptom in adults.) It occurs in hands, knees, wrists, ankles, or feet. Joint pain most commonly lasts one to three weeks, and typically does not cause long-term problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diagnosis\">Do you need to see a doctor for fifth disease?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnyone in whom the diagnosis is not clear, appears ill, or whose fever will not go down should consult a healthcare provider,\u201d says Dr. Poston. Take babies younger than 12 weeks to the pediatrician for a fever higher than 100.4 degrees F. Children younger than age 2 should see a physician for a fever higher than 104 degrees F that persists for more than 24 hours. Anyone with a fever for longer than three days should see a healthcare provider for professional medical advice, according to Dr. Poston. If you or your child develop joint swelling, see a healthcare provider. And if a child has sickle cell disease and you suspect fifth disease, the child should see a provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/fever-temperature\/\"><b>What temperature is considered a fever?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf symptoms are lasting for more than a month, a doctor&#8217;s visit is advisable,\u201d Dr. Mandal says. \u201cIf you have an immune or blood disorder and have symptoms of fifth disease, a doctor&#8217;s visit is recommended.\u201d For example, children with sickle cell anemia should see a healthcare provider with any fever, particularly if they seem pale. Additionally, children with joint swelling or who seem to be getting worse with time should be<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/skin\/Pages\/Fifth-Disease-Parvovirus-B19.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">examined by a healthcare provider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifth disease is usually diagnosed by a general practitioner, family healthcare provider, or pediatrician. Blood tests are available, but only performed under some circumstances (such as during pregnancy). Typically, fifth disease is diagnosed by a visual inspection of the face rash.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatments\">Fifth disease treatment<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no treatment that cures the virus that causes fifth disease. Treatment is only to provide symptom relief of the viral infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost people who have fifth disease get better without treatment,\u201d says Dr. Mandal. \u201cPain relievers such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol-childrens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [Tylenol] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-motrin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">] can be taken for joint pain and fevers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy-childrens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may provide relief if the rash is itchy or uncomfortable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-donation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood transfusions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and hospitalization may be necessary for people with serious<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/anemia-treatment-and-medications\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anemias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/children-pain-relievers-fever-reducers\/\"><b>Best pain relievers and fever reducers for kids<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\">Fifth disease prevention<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/parvovirusb19\/fifth-disease.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prevent fifth disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the same way you avoid catching any other virus (such as a cold or COVID-19):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frequent handwashing with soap and water, lasting at least 20 seconds each time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cover coughs and sneezes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, and mouth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay home when sick<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid others who are sick<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once someone has had fifth disease, they do not get it again, so most adults need not worry about catching it. Some pregnant people who have not had fifth disease and who work with children choose to stay home if there is a case of fifth disease present at their job, or for the duration of their pregnancy as a precaution. Parvo virus infection can cause serious pregnancy complications, so if you have a known parvo exposure during pregnancy, consult your obstetrician.
