I Could Be Allergic to That?<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s dander? It\u2019s dead skin cells that are shed from pets, explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mananushahmd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manan Shah, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an otolaryngologist at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradoearnosethroat.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Colorado Ear, Nose &amp; Throat Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Lakewood, CO and co-founder and CEO of at-home allergy testing and treatment company <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyndly.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wyndly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPet dander is very light and can stick to clothing, skin, hair, and numerous other surfaces,\u201d Dr. Shah says. That means even households without pets can be exposed to dander if a pet owner enters their home, he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how many people are allergic to dogs and cats? According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5809771\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as many as 10% to 20% of the worldwide population has pet dander allergies. While pet allergies are common, they\u2019re especially prevalent in people who have a family history of allergies, says Dr. Qamar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides direct contact with cat or dog dander, it\u2019s possible to have an allergic reaction to a pet\u2019s saliva, urine, sweat, or fur, which are all sources of allergens, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.greatvet.com\/about-alex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Schechter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, DVM, a veterinarian at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/burrwoodvet.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burrwood Veterinary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Royal Oak, Michigan. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carpets, bedding, furniture, and clothing can all become stained with pet saliva,\u201d Dr. Schecter says.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to tell if you\u2019re allergic to dogs and cats<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acaai.org\/allergies\/types\/pet-allergy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, symptoms of pet allergies include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nasal congestion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Itchy, watery, or red eyes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin rashes\/hives<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s possible to be allergic only to dogs, only allergic to cats, or allergic to both\u2013but cats and dogs produce different allergens. However, the symptoms for cat and dog allergies are the same, which means cat allergy medicines are the same as dog allergy medicines. And while pet allergy symptoms can be annoying, they are treatable with allergy medications or allergy shots for severe cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you have asthma, pet allergies may make your asthma symptoms worse. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5756688\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, individuals with cat or dog allergies who also had asthma were at increased risk of asthma attacks when chronically exposed to their triggers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6886252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">older study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that cat allergies were more common than dog allergies. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacionline.org\/article\/S0091-6749(14)01199-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more recent data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed only a small variability between the two: In subjects 6 years and older, allergies occurred at a rate of 12.1% for cats and 11.8% for dogs in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosis of pet allergies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people know they have pet allergies when their allergy symptoms flare after being around animals, Dr. Shah says. But for others, it\u2019s not so simple. For example, people with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/best-seasonal-allergy-medicine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">seasonal or year-round allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may already have allergy symptoms, which makes it hard to decipher what causes them, he explains. Others may be around multiple animals, making it tricky to distinguish whether the family dog or cat (or both) is triggering their symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe easiest and most fool-proof way of determining if you have animal allergies is through an allergy test,\u201d Dr. Shah says. These include skin-prick tests and blood tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Skin-prick tests <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are medical tests done at your doctor\u2019s office. They involve pricking the skin with tiny amounts of different allergens and observing how the body responds. \u201cThis is done to determine which allergens cause allergic reactions and whether they are related to pet allergens,\u201d Dr. Schecter says.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Blood tests <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can be used to identify the presence of specific proteins in your blood that are in pet dander. These proteins can be found in your blood even if you do not have an allergic reaction to pets yet, indicating that you may be at risk for developing allergies in the future, Dr. Schecter says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m allergic to my dog or cat\u2014now what?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best treatment for pet allergies will depend on the severity of a patient\u2019s allergies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor mild pet allergies with sneezing, runny nose, and itchy eyes, the first-line treatment is antihistamine pills,\u201d says Dr. Qamar, who explains that there are a few different types of antihistamines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most commonly known antihistamine is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/benadryl-allergy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Benadryl<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says Dr. Shah, but it can cause drowsiness. That\u2019s why he recommends second-generation antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec, or Allegra, which are less sedating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antihistamines typically start to work within 30 minutes, reaching their maximum effect in about two hours, advises Dr. Shah. Some antihistamines work for only four to six hours (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/non-drowsy-benadryl\/\">first-generation antihistamines like Benadryl<\/a>), while others last for 12 to 24 hours (second-generation antihistamines like Zyrtec), he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be wondering whether Claritin or Zyrtec is the best pet allergy medicine\u2014but which antihistamine works best for you depends on the severity of your symptoms. For example, a person with a mild allergy to cats or dogs may do well with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Another person with more severe allergies may do better with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, Dr. Qamar says that although Zyrtec may be more effective in some patients, &#8220;around 10% of people can become sleepy with it.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf someone has prominent allergies and they become sedated often with medication, I usually recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\/what-is\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/xyzal-allergy-24hr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Xyzal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d she says. Dr. Schecter says Allegra may also be helpful in controlling pet allergy symptoms. However, they require a time commitment and can be expensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Shah, you can get lasting allergy relief with immunotherapy. If you have a dog allergy but have your heart set on a pup of your own, breeds like the Afghan Hound, American Hairless Terrier, Bichon Frise, Irish Water Spaniel, Maltese, or Poodle may be a better choice. And for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/usserviceanimals.org\/blog\/hypoallergenic-cats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cat lovers with allergies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, breeds including the Balinese, Cornish Rex, Javanese, and Siberian may be less likely to trigger a reaction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are if you\u2019ve fallen in love with your furry friend before you discovered you\u2019re allergic to pets, you\u2019ll likely want to find a way to keep your four-legged friend around.
