But things really start to amp up when the weather turns cool. Fall and winter are prime flu season months, with cases of the contagious respiratory illness peaking between December and February. With the novel <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-information\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coronavirus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (COVID-19) and the flu on a collision course, this could be \u201cthe worst fall, from a public health perspective, we&#8217;ve ever had,&#8221; Robert Redfield, MD, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a widely circulated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/lung\/news\/20200812\/redfield-this-fall-could-be-the-worse-weve-seen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WebMD interview<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The flu is more than just a cold on steroids. It comes on suddenly and can produce a fever, chills, fatigue, headache, body aches, vomiting, and diarrhea\u2014in addition to symptoms often associated with the common cold, like a sore throat, sneezing, cough, and runny nose. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/burden\/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> estimates that between 39 to 56 million people in the United States were infected with the influenza virus between Oct. 1, 2019 and April 4, 2020, with 24,000 to 62,000 dying.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing the flu is more important than ever, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic and an already-burdened healthcare system. Sure, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/flu-shot-2020\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaccination<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is key. But knowing when and how the flu virus is transmitted are important tools in keeping you and your family flu-free this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"transmission\">Is the flu airborne?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts believe that the flu is primarily spread <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/disease\/spread.htm#:~:text=Person%20to%20Person,be%20inhaled%20into%20the%20lungs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through the droplets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released when an infected person sneezes, coughs, or speaks. These droplets land in the mouths or noses of people nearby. Or, less commonly, a person might touch a surface contaminated with them, then touching his or her own face.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But now there\u2019s evidence showing that influenza transmission can also be airborne. A 2018 study out of the University of Maryland and published in the journal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/115\/5\/1081\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the flu virus can be shed in tiny droplets suspended in the air from the exhaled breaths of infected people. How far these infectious aerosols travel and how long they stay in the air wasn\u2019t studied, but standard COVID-19 safety protocols\u2014standing six feet away from people and wearing a face or surgical mask\u2014may be good infection-control measures in addition to handwashing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while you may have heard a lot about how limiting our exposure to germs weakens the immune system, some healthcare professionals say it\u2019s not something we need to be concerned about in the short term, as we fight the COVID-19 pandemic. \u201cI can see all these measures decreasing the immune response, especially in the very young, who are building up their repertoire of memory cells,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/directory\/physicians\/s\/hilary-smith\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hilary Smith, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pediatrician affiliated with Boston Children\u2019s Health Physicians. \u201cBut I\u2019d rather take my chances killing some good germs [along with] the coronavirus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s droplets or aerosols, another thing to consider when it comes to catching any germ is one\u2019s own individual immune system. \u201cWhy does the flu always hit the very old and the very young particularly hard?\u201d Dr. Smith asks. \u201cIt\u2019s because of their [weaker] immune systems, to a degree. As a pediatrician, I can get coughed and sneezed on by kids with the flu all the time and in the 14 years I\u2019ve been practicing, I haven\u2019t caught the flu. Is that all because I got the flu shot? No. A lot of it just depends on your immune system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"season\">When is flu season?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can catch the flu at any time of year, but cases tend to tick upward starting about October, peaking around February, and then dropping (although not disappearing) in the spring and summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/summer-flu\/\"><b>Is it a summer flu or something else?<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccination is an important tool against the spread of the flu, but what worked last year might not work this year. That\u2019s because the flu virus itself can change from one year to the next.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInfluenza viruses replicate in human and animal cells using a process that easily allows changes to its genetic material,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uamshealth.com\/provider\/robert-h-hopkins-jr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Hopkins Jr., MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. \u201cThis results in a constant shift in virus characteristics and, less frequently, major changes that can lead to pandemics. There\u2019s active research ongoing to develop a \u2018universal\u2019 flu vaccine to protect us by attacking parts of the virus which remain more stable despite these genetic \u2018errors.\u2019 The vaccine we will use this year has three major changes from the type we used last year\u2014again, it\u2019s a guess\u2014but I am hopeful it will be very effective.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will COVID-19 affect this year\u2019s flu season? Will more people social distancing and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/face-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wearing face masks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help tamp down the spread of the flu? Or will people, wary of making a trip to their doctor\u2019s office where COVID-19 patients might be, forgo the flu shot? Only time will tell.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUnfortunately, our experience with COVID has demonstrated that our society, as a whole, is not very good at personal-protection activities,\u201d comments Dr. Hopkins. \u201cWhile I would love to see a significant uptick in influenza vaccination acceptance this year\u2014and I will certainly push for that\u2014I expect this to be a difficult winter with the convergence of COVID and flu along with RSV [respiratory syncytial virus, a common and contagious respiratory infection usually seen in young children], which also causes significant respiratory illness in the winter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"contagious\">How long is the flu contagious?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CDC, an infected person can start <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/about\/disease\/spread.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spreading the flu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> virus one day before symptoms arise and up to seven days after. Overall, though, an infected person is most contagious three to four days after their symptoms start. Children and people with a weakened immune system (for example, those with certain immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and people on chemotherapy) can be contagious for longer than seven days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people recover from the flu and are no longer contagious after about a week. Staying home and away from people while you recuperate is important to stopping the flu\u2019s spread. Experts at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucihealth.org\/blog\/2017\/02\/flu-contagious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UC-Irvine Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say you should stay home until:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have no fever for 24 hours (without taking fever-reducing medicines like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/aspirin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aspirin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Motrin)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You do not have vomiting or diarrhea for at least 24 hours<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your coughing and sneezing has been reduced by at least 75%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And don\u2019t push yourself. Ease back into your normal routine gradually. If just getting up, showered, and dressed exhausts you, you probably should stay home and continue to rest. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucihealth.org\/blog\/2017\/02\/flu-contagious\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> advise not returning to your normal schedule until you have at least 90% of your regular energy levels back.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/influenza-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Influenza treatments and medications<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"spread\">How to avoid spreading the flu (and how to protect yourself)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting the flu this winter isn\u2019t inevitable. There are safety precautions you can (and should) take.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u00a01.\u00a0 Get vaccinated annually.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The influenza vaccine is available at pharmacies and in healthcare settings, such as your doctor\u2019s office or local health clinic.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flu vaccination is recommended for most people ages <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/prevent\/whoshouldvax.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6 months and older<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccination is particularly important for people who have a high risk of complications from the flu, including young children, those over 65, and those with certain health conditions like asthma or diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vaccine isn\u2019t always a perfect match against a changing flu virus, but according to the CDC, it typically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/vaccines-work\/vaccineeffect.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduces the risk of flu by 40%-60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best time to get vaccinated is in September or October, before the flu season kicks into high gear. But getting vaccinated into the winter can still be worthwhile.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And let\u2019s set the record straight: The flu vaccine won\u2019t give you the flu, although you could develop some mild side effects, like a fever and muscle aches.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>2. Keep up your COVID-19 protection measures. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These measures are particularly helpful if you\u2019re taking care of someone with the flu.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wear a face mask.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stay six feet apart from people. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cidrap.umn.edu\/news-perspective\/2013\/02\/study-airborne-flu-viruses-may-play-big-role-transmission\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Infectious Diseases<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that 89% of flu viruses were found in small particles that circulated up to six feet from an infected person\u2019s head. The closer you were to the person, the higher the concentration of the virus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash your hands (for 20 seconds) regularly or use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/does-hand-sanitizer-expire\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hand sanitizer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with at least 60% alcohol. If you\u2019re caring for a sick person, it\u2019s especially important to wash your hands after handling the person\u2019s used tissues and dirty laundry and dishes\/cups.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean frequently touched surfaces (doorknobs, keyboards, counters\/desks\/tables) with disinfectants regularly. According to the CDC, the flu virus can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/resource-center\/images\/multi-language-pdfs\/contamination_cleaning_english_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">live on surfaces for up to 48 hours<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Common household cleaners, such as detergents and cleaners containing alcohols or hydrogen peroxide are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/flu\/resource-center\/images\/multi-language-pdfs\/contamination_cleaning_english_508.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effective cleaners<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says the CDC.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>3. If you sneeze or cough, do so into a tissue or your elbow and then wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>4. Avoid touching your nose, mouth, or eyes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014easy entry points for the flu virus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> Again, <\/span><b>stay home if you feel sick <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and don\u2019t return to your normal activities until you are well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With these measures, you reduce your risk of becoming sick, and the potential for complications if you do catch the virus.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Transmission | Flu season | Contagiousness | How to stop the spread The influenza virus (aka, \u201cthe flu\u201d) is kicking around all year long.
