But here we are, in September, with no end in sight&#8230;and more decisions to make than ever about how to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/coronavirus-summer-safety-tips\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep our families safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many parents, this means reluctantly signing up for a continuation of last spring: working from home, managing distance learning or homeschooling with our kids, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keeping up with all our regular parenting duties, like cooking, cleaning, setting screen time limits, and breaking up sibling fights while managing our own mental health. They\u2019re doing all that while managing the stress and fear of returning to in-person work and\/or school. Fun times, right?! Yeah, not so much.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Understanding the \u2018new normal\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was two weeks into the March lockdown before I ended up sobbing into a towel in the bathroom so my kids couldn\u2019t hear me break down. My husband and I were both working from home, constantly in each other\u2019s way. Our three boys were with us 24\/7, practically climbing the walls with cabin fever. We were terrified about the looming threat of COVID-19 but trying to hide those fears from our kids, exhausted by the effort of putting on brave, confident faces at the dinner table night after night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, we were already homeschooling pre-lockdown\u2014or else I probably would have cracked under the pressure much sooner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All across the United States, other<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/how-is-coronavirus-affecting-americans-lives-survey\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">families were doing the same exact thing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This was the \u201cnew normal\u201d: spending every waking minute cooped up at home with your kids, trying to work from home (which you maybe never did before) and help them complete their virtual education (which you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definitely <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">never did before) at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, months later, the pandemic is still sticking around&#8230;and the \u201cnew normal\u201d has now become the regular ol\u2019 normal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How parenting during a pandemic can affect your health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spoiler alert: Pandemic life is much harder, more isolating, and more exhausting than anything you\u2019ve likely ever done before as a parent. You probably don\u2019t even realize what all the stress is doing to you, and you may not be taking good enough care of yourself.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result? You could be heading for some major burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBurnout happens when someone gets so exhausted they no longer have the strength and ability to function at the same high level,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thefamilycoach.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine Pearlman, Ph.D.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, family coach and the author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ignore It!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cWhen this happens to parents, they start to care less about issues that are typically important; they can become depressed, overwhelmed easily, and most importantly, unable to meet the needs of their children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And those are just the mental health effects! There are physical health effects of running on empty, too, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches and muscle aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/sleep-remedies-for-coronavirus-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Insomnia<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-deal-with-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or panic attacks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lack of energy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low libido<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased heart rate<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gastrointestinal issues like<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/heartburn-how-to-treat-nausea-and-stomachaches\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heartburn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased risk of infection or illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weight loss or gain<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019ve experienced any of these mental or physical effects, it\u2019s understandable&#8230;but it\u2019s also time to take stock of your day-to-day schedule and see if you can make some changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe old saying from flight attendants about making sure to put on your own oxygen mask before trying to help your children is apt during these times,\u201d says Dr. Pearlman. \u201cParents cannot help their children, partners, friends, or coworkers [without first] meeting their own basic needs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to cope with parenting while trying to work from home<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re probably thinking, \u201cOkay, but how am I supposed to make time for myself right now?\u201d We won\u2019t lie: It\u2019s not easy! The following tips can help you set healthy boundaries with your family, coworkers, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yourself as you balance all your responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adopt block scheduling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children thrive with consistency and structure, says Dr. Pearlman, so dividing your day up into blocks of time for meals, free play, screen time, bath and bed prep, and school or online learning helps kids know what to expect, reduces meltdowns, and helps parents feel more organized.<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick your battles<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As parents, we tend to feel like every little decision is important, but a pandemic is not the time to hold everyone (including yourself!) to super high standards. Dr. Pearlman says it\u2019s 100% fine to break rules, change rules, and lighten up on expectations. You\u2019ll feel less stressed\u2014and so will your kids.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t consistently burn the midnight oil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re finding yourself catching up on work, homeschool planning, or chores every night after the kids go to sleep, you\u2019re setting yourself up for burnout, says Dr. Pearlman: \u201cThis might work out for a few days [but] over time, the lack of care will take a toll on patience, cognition, and your ability to cope.\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set work and home life boundaries, and stick to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take time outs<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re not just for kids! Dr. Pearlman says everyone in the family should try to take a personal \u201ctime out\u201d at least once a day, where they can have some space to recharge, be alone, and care for their basic needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek help if you need it<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re feeling a lack of will to get up or are having difficulty helping your children with basic parenting tasks, it is a sign to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealth.gov\/get-help\/immediate-help\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">find some help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Dr. Pearlman, \u201c[in the form] of a partner, family member, or a trained therapist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The important thing to remember is you\u2019re not alone\u2014and this won\u2019t go on forever, even though it may feel like that some days.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
