When we eat food, it gets broken down into small glucose molecules that move into the bloodstream from the digestive tract. From the bloodstream \u201csuper highway,\u201d glucose can travel to any cell in the body. But it needs a \u201ctaxi\u201d to get there, and that taxi is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/drug-classes\/insulins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone has diabetes, their body cannot produce or use enough insulin. That\u2019s 3.5 times more than in 1990. In most cases, Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/child-type-1-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and teens, but it can manifest in adults as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Type 2 diabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with Type 2 can produce insulin, but their bodies can\u2019t use it well. When blood sugar is consistently high, the pancreas continuously pumps out insulin, and eventually, cells become overexposed. Type 2 is by far the most common type of diabetes and one that typically develops in adults; however, the rate of Type 2 diabetes in children is increasing. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/data-research\/research\/trends-new-diabetes-cases-young-people.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trends<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CDC, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Gestational diabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type only occurs in pregnant women and typically goes away after childbirth; however, half of the women who have gestational diabetes will develop Type 2 diabetes later in life. Treatment includes a doctor-recommended exercise and meal plan. Sometimes, daily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/blood-tests-for-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood glucose tests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and insulin injections are necessary. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/about\/gestational-diabetes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gestational<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, CDC, 2024)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Prediabetes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prediabetes isn&#8217;t technically diabetes. It\u2019s more like a precursor. A prediabetic person&#8217;s blood glucose is consistently above average but not high enough to warrant a full diabetes diagnosis. People with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prediabetes-guide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prediabetes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can help prevent Type 2 diabetes by implementing a healthy diet, increased physical activity, and stress management.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s how many people have each type of diabetes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 314,000 U.S. children and 1.8 million U.S. adults over 20 years old have been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. (CDC, 2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, 21,732 children younger than 18 years old received a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes, and 14,490 received a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. (CDC, 2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 95% of all U.S. diabetes cases are Type 2. (CDC, 2026)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 5% to 9% of pregnant U.S. women develop gestational diabetes each year. (CDC, 2026)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"common-diabetes-complications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common diabetes complications<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people with diabetes can still do all of their favorite activities as long as they maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, \u201cliving with diabetes is a daily challenge,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/drsharitamd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharita E. Warfield<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified emergency medicine physician and the founder and CEO of Warfield Medical Group, PLLC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who decide to make changes have to ask questions like, \u201cIs it too many carbs continually? Does it have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/does-sugar-cause-diabetes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added sugar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Am I getting enough fiber?\u201d Then, \u201cthey have to figure out how to add in physical activity, ways to destress, and how to avoid toxic substances like drugs or alcohol or sugary substances. Not only that, but a person living with diabetes also has to remember to take their insulin, oral pills, or both, and check their blood sugar levels daily.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might seem like a lot of work, but the alternatives are sobering. Diabetes can cause serious health problems, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes directly caused 95,150 deaths in 2023, making it the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Diabetes was listed as a contributing cause in nearly 400,000 other deaths that year. (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diabetes.org\/about-diabetes\/statistics\/about-diabetes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ADA), 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have Type 2 diabetes have a 1.5\u20132 times greater chance of developing cardiovascular disease.
