In my super-cautious new-mom-to-be state, RSV became a lurking monster, particularly with a baby due in February\u2014right in the middle of RSV season. I knew it could be serious for young babies, and so in my head, it became enemy number one. Thankfully, once I got past the visceral reaction, I learned that most of the time, RSV is not serious. In fact, almost all children will have had at least one RSV infection by the time they reach 2 years old, usually without serious effects.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"RSV\">What is RSV?<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/chest-lungs\/Pages\/RSV-When-Its-More-Than-Just-a-Cold.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a respiratory virus which usually causes mild,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-long-does-a-cold-last\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cold symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drsomamandal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a board-certified internist at Summit Medical Group. \u201cIt can be problematic in infants and older adults. It is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways of the lungs) and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/is-pneumonia-contagious\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pneumonia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children who are less than 1 year old.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV is very common and very<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kidshealth.org\/en\/parents\/rsv.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">contagious<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spreading easily through places like daycare centers and schools. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rsv\/about\/transmission.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An infected person is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usually contagious with RSV for three to eight days<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), but some infants and people with weakened immune systems may remain contagious for up to four weeks, even if they are no longer symptomatic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it is possible to catch RSV at any time of year, RSV is most common between late fall and early spring, around the same time period as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-do-you-get-the-flu\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flu season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People of any age can catch RSV, but some demographics are at a higher risk for complications. \u201cInfants and older adults, especially those older than 65, are at [higher] risk for RSV,\u201d says Dr. Mandal. \u201cAdults with chronic heart or lung disease or those that are immunocompromised are also at particular risk. RSV can sometimes worsen conditions for people with asthma, COPD, and congestive heart failure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risk factors for RSV in a baby or young child <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/chest-lungs\/Pages\/RSV-When-Its-More-Than-Just-a-Cold.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premature infants, particularly before the 29th week of pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low birth weight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Younger than 12 weeks old during RSV season<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chronic lung disease of prematurity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak immune system (due to illness or treatment)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain heart defects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having siblings (RSV can be passed from older children to babies and young children)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternal smoking during pregnancy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to secondhand smoke<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History of atopy (allergies\/eczema)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not breastfeeding (breastfeeding passes antibodies from adult to baby\/child)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regular exposure to higher numbers of people such as in a childcare setting or crowded living conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"symptoms\">RSV symptoms<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV generally appears like the common cold, especially in adults and older children. Though symptoms overlap with some hallmark signs of COVID-19, it doesn\u2019t typically cause dry cough or loss of smell and taste. Symptoms of RSV include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cough<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very stuffy\/runny nose<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decrease in appetite<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally feeling unwell<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild headache<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most people, symptoms will not progress past this stage. For some babies and children, RSV can lead to more serious conditions, such as pneumonia (infection and inflammation of the air sacs in one or both lungs), bronchiolitis (mucus in the upper and lower airways), or apnea (stopping breathing).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More serious symptoms of a severe RSV infection to look for in babies and children, in addition to cold symptoms,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/conditions\/chest-lungs\/Pages\/RSV-When-Its-More-Than-Just-a-Cold.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaring of the nostrils<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head bobbing with breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhythmic grunting during breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belly breathing, tugging between the ribs and\/or tugging at the lower neck. (If the rib cage is \u201ccaving in\u201d when the baby\/child inhales, forming an upside-down \u201cV\u201d under the neck, they are having difficulty breathing.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pauses in breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should I seek medical care for a child with RSV?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because RSV can resemble a common cold, it can be difficult to determine if a doctor\u2019s appointment is necessary. Call your primary healthcare provider<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationwidechildrens.org\/conditions\/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if your baby or child<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is younger than 6 months of age and has cold symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is at high risk for RSV and has cold symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has trouble eating, drinking, or sleeping<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seems very sick or is very cranky<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has a high fever (greater than 100.3 F if less than 4 weeks old, or greater than 100.9 F of more than 4 weeks old)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is too sleepy or not active<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has a cough that gets worse or produces yellow, green, or grey mucus<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV can become serious. \u201cRSV is usually a mild or moderate disease that does not require hospitalization,\u201d says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/mdmercy.com\/centers-of-excellence\/womens-health\/family-childbirth-and-childrens-center\/our-doctors\/pediatricians\/ashanti-w-woods-md\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashanti Woods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, a pediatrician at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. \u201cHowever, in some cases, both moderate and severe cases can require hospitalization, sometimes even in the intensive care unit setting. If a child is having difficulty breathing, that child may need to have a tube inserted into their lungs to assist them with breathing. RSV can be quite serious and even life-threatening in some cases.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seek immediate\/emergency medical attention if your baby or child:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is having trouble breathing, is breathing rapidly, or too slowly<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has pauses in breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is very drowsy, lethargic, or has a significant decrease in activity and alertness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has lips, skin, tongue, or fingernails that look bluish or grayish in color<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shows<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/health-issues\/injuries-emergencies\/Pages\/dehydration.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">signs of dehydration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (reduced urination, sunken soft spot on head, dry mouth, fewer tears while crying, etc.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Has symptoms of pneumonia or bronchiolitis (see list of serious symptoms above)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you believe the baby\/child needs immediate medical attention<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, hospitalization for RSV is uncommon\u2014only 3% of children with RSV will require a hospital stay, and most of those children go home within a few days. It is rare for a child to stay in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"diagnosis\">How is RSV diagnosed?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRSV is usually a clinical diagnosis, meaning the physician or nurse practitioner gets a history from the patient and does an exam to make the diagnosis,\u201d says Dr. Woods. \u201cRSV can be detected through nasal washings, or collecting the mucus from one\u2019s nose or throat and sending it to the lab to be tested.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A healthcare provider may also do chest X-rays or other tests for conditions related to RSV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treatments\">RSV treatment<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most RSV infections<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/rsv\/about\/symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go away on their own<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, usually within one to two weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTreatment for RSV is primarily supportive, which includes frequent monitoring, and administration of fluid and respiratory support as needed,\u201d Dr. Mandal says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ideally, hydration is given orally and rarely an IV is required. For babies and children older than 6 months,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/children-pain-relievers-fever-reducers\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fever<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be managed with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/children-pain-relievers-fever-reducers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-the-counter medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-advil\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advil<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-motrin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motrin<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/ibuprofen-childrens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ibuprofen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/tylenol-childrens\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tylenol<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/childrens-acetaminophen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acetaminophen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Do NOT use aspirin, as it is linked to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/reyes-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reye\u2019s syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in children with viral illnesses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other at-home treatments include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a cool mist humidifier (never use a warm or hot mist humidifier, which is a burn risk).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giving plenty of liquids (breast milk or formula only for babies under 6 months. Water or Pedialyte, in addition to breast milk or formula (if applicable), for babies and children over 6 months.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loosening and removing nasal mucus in babies and children too young to blow their nose with saline (salt water) drops and a bulb syringe.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are a few instances where a breathing treatment may be given,\u201d says Dr. Woods. \u201cMedicines that are used for an asthma attack such as<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/albuterol-sulfate\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">albuterol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or steroids often are ineffective in the treatment of RSV, although they are sometimes used in cases where the patient is a known asthmatic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In more severe cases, breathing assistance such as oxygen may be given, or intubation (a tube inserted down the throat to the airway, with breathing assisted by a machine) may be necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"prevention\">RSV prevention<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RSV is highly contagious. Like the common cold, RSV spreads through droplets (saliva, mucus, nasal discharge) from person to person (via coughs, sneezes, spit), and from contact with RSV-contaminated surfaces. RSV can survive on surfaces such as toys and door knobs for up to six hours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best way to prevent the spread of RSV (and other communicable illnesses) is by practicing proper hygiene.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/how-to-wash-your-hands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash hands regularly and thoroughly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, especially before touching babies, cooking, or eating, and after sneezing\/coughing, or changing diapers. RSV can live on unwashed hands for at least 30 minutes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clean and disinfect commonly used items regularly.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wash baby and children\u2019s toys and clothes frequently.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not share items like pacifiers, towels, cutlery, cups, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discourage kissing the baby.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ensure your child and all family members are up-to-date on routine vaccinations, including annual flu vaccines.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoiding close contact with those who can spread RSV is also important, especially for those who are at higher risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep those at higher risk away from anyone with cold-like symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limit your baby\u2019s exposure to crowds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If possible,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-and-conditions---pediatrics\/r\/respiratory-syncytial-virus-rsv-in-children.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid childcare centers with lots of children<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the baby\u2019s first winter season<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is possible to catch RSV more than once, even within the same season, so these measures need to be taken with everyone, including healthy children and even children who have previously been infected with RSV.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCurrently there is no widely accepted antiviral for RSV once a patient has it,\u201d Dr. Woods says. \u201cThere is a vaccine (Palivizumab) available for high-risk patients including children born extremely prematurely (usually 10 weeks or more before their due date) that is given early in RSV season to prevent them from getting it.\u201d A healthcare provider can determine if this medication (multiple injections) is advised for specific patients as a preventative measure. There are very <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pediatrics.aappublications.org\/content\/134\/2\/415.full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strict criteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this treatment as it is very expensive and insurances use these criteria to determine coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While RSV can be scary and should be taken very seriously, it\u2019s comforting to know that for most children, it doesn\u2019t constitute a crisis. Practice preventative measures to protect the most vulnerable among us, monitor those colds, and keep those hands clean!<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Endless coughs and sneezes, runny noses, and unexplained itchy bumps\u2014kids seem to be a magnet for germs.
