There are so many steps\u2014from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/normal-blood-glucose-levels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitoring high blood sugar levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/what-are-carbohydrates\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">counting carbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to following an exercise routine. What the average person may not expect? A diabetes action plan also includes daily diabetes foot care to prevent serious complications from the condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is foot care so important for people with diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly 50% of people with diabetes have nerve damage, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/library\/features\/healthy-feet.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC). Called diabetic neuropathy (or peripheral neuropathy), it can occur anywhere in the body, but it\u2019s most common in hands and feet. It can cause numbness or tingling, but also limits your ability to feel pain. While that might seem like a good thing, at first glance, pain is part of your body\u2019s communication system. It lets you know when something is wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing foot problems such as injury or infection, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.footcaremd.org\/conditions-treatments\/the-diabetic-foot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When a small issue, like a cut or a blister, goes unnoticed, it can quickly become a more serious problem. The good news is proper diabetes management combined with consistent care and exams can prevent minor foot injuries from resulting in medical complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to examine your feet<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with diabetes should maintain regular, daily foot exams. Start each exam by inspecting your feet and proceeding to check your toes (including in between your toes) and soles of your feet, says Susan Besser, MD, a primary care provider at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Francisco J. Oliva, DPM, owner of<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/olivapodiatry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliva Podiatry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Coral Gables, Florida, encourages his patients to \u201cuse a hand mirror to carefully check the bottoms of the feet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the signs of diabetic feet problems?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During your daily foot exam, look for:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cracked skin<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sores<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bruising<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skin discoloration<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calluses<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nail changes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in the way feet feel when you touch them<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These could all be signs of a problem, according to Drs. Besser and Oliva.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of particular concern are diabetic foot ulcers that can form on the bottoms of your feet. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apma.org\/diabeticwoundcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says these sores occur in approximately 15% of patients with diabetes, often due to poor blood flow (another diabetes complication). Of those patients who develop a foot ulcer, 6% will be hospitalized due to infection or ulcer-related complications and 14% to 24% of patients with diabetes with a foot ulcer that doesn\u2019t get better with treatment, will require amputation to prevent the infection from spreading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"hhttps:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/diabetes-statistics\/\"><b>Diabetes statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment for foot ulcers<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is foot ulcers are largely preventable and daily self-exams can identify them early when they can be effectively treated. If you do develop a foot ulcer, Dr. Oliva says it\u2019s important to seek out professional health care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may need antibiotics or help to disinfect the area. \u201cOnce a foot ulcer has formed, the best care comes from a wound care specialist,\u201d Dr. Oliva says. \u201cIt\u2019s not appropriate to self-care for an ulcer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 tips for diabetic foot care<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With vigilance and daily routines, you can prevent many issues, like ulcers\u2014using these steps to take care of your feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Check feet daily.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Daily foot care is important for people with diabetes in order to avoid medical complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Wash feet every day.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI advise my patients to wash their feet daily with warm soap and water and pat dry thoroughly, especially between the toes,\u201d Dr. Besser says. Don\u2019t use hot water. Decreased feeling can make you more susceptible to accidental burns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince skin can become rough and dry with diabetes, it\u2019s fine to use an emollient lotion to hydrate and smooth skin,\u201d explains Dr. Besser. Just don\u2019t apply moisturizer between your toes as too much dampness can lead to infection, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/diabetes\/complications\/foot-complications\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/psoriasis-vs-eczema-vs-dry-skin\/\"><b>Is it just dry skin? Always wear shoes.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those with diabetes should never go barefoot since doing so can increase the risk of foot injury, according to Dr. Besser.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Choose the correct footwear.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wearing comfortable shoes and dry socks can also help prevent complications for those with diabetes.<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.diabetesjournals.org\/content\/14\/2\/59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cotton and wool socks are more absorbent, keeping feet warm and dry, protecting feet from fungal infections (like athlete\u2019s foot) and bacteria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCommercially available double woven socks are available without a prescription, but are not covered by insurance,\u201d Dr. Oliva says. \u201cDiabetic in-depth shoes with shock-absorbing materials are specially-designed shoes that can help reduce the risk of skin breakdown in those with diabetes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Make sure you have the right fit.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before buying new shoes, have your foot measured to ensure you\u2019re choosing the correct size shoe. Improperly fit shoes can cause blisters to form.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Keep your blood moving.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSpecially designed shoes offer protection for diabetic feet and can also promote healthy circulation,\u201d explains Dr. Besser. Diabetic shoes are often covered by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicare.gov\/coverage\/therapeutic-shoes-inserts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medicare Part B<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other health insurance programs when prescribed by a podiatrist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider taking breaks to put your feet up, and make a point to wiggle your toes whenever you\u2019re seated to encourage blood flow to your feet. Avoid smoking\u2014it can constrict your blood vessels and result in poor circulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Schedule regular checkups with a podiatrist.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to conducting daily self-care, Dr. Oliva recommends those with diabetes visit their podiatrist at least once a year for professional foot checks. A podiatrist can help develop a care plan to prevent foot complications and keep patients healthy and mobile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During your annual foot exam, your physician will check your circulation to see if you\u2019re developing peripheral neuropathy, which makes it harder to feel a foot injury.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no cure for peripheral neuropathy, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apma.org\/neuropathy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Podiatric Medical Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but there are treatments that can reduce or relieve symptoms,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/neuropathy-treatment-and-medications\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including ibuprofen, steroids, or immunosuppressants.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your podiatrist will also look for hammer toes, bunions, corns, calluses, and other foot changes.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Take care when trimming your toenails.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consult with your podiatrist on the correct way to trim your nails. Cutting them too short, or diagonally can lead to an ingrown toenail or nail infection. After cutting properly, smooth rough edges with an emery board.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it can be tempting to head to the spa, and let them take care of it, check with your healthcare provider first. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOnce a patient has been evaluated by a podiatrist, a determination can be made as to whether they can safely get a salon pedicure, which isn\u2019t recommended if they have circulation issues, or if they should see a podiatrist to have them regularly perform their nail care,\u201d says Dr. Oliva.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Don\u2019t try to remove corns and calluses on your own.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A podiatrist can also treat and remove any calluses or corns without damaging the skin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough calluses might not seem like a big concern, sometimes the layers of callused skin can separate and fill with fluid,\u201d Dr. Oliva says. \u201cWhen the fluid becomes contaminated and infected, the result is a foot ulcer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Be kind to your feet.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of managing your diabetes is maintaining an active lifestyle to boost circulation and keep weight in check. Make sure you\u2019re choosing exercise that doesn\u2019t put undue stress on your legs and feet\u2014like swimming or biking.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11. Know when to call your healthcare provider.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Good foot health\u00a0 begins at home, but there are certain circumstances that warrant a call to your healthcare provider. \u201cReport blisters, open sores or wounds, tingling, burning, and lack of feeling in your foot, to your doctor right away,\u201d Dr. Oliva says. \u201cAlso, corns, calluses, and ingrown or thick toenails should always be treated by a podiatrist who is knowledgeable in diabetic foot care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Managing diabetes can be a challenge.
