All that beautiful foliage means Halloween is approaching. 2020 is not a typical year, however, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/pandemic-parenting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global COVID-19 pandemic has many parents questioning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how to celebrate the haunting holiday while keeping up with the social distancing and hygiene measures necessary to help keep their families (and everyone else) safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halloween may look a little different this year, but it\u2019s not canceled! With some creativity, and modifications in our behavior, celebrating this spooky end to October can be both fun and safe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-in-children\/\"><b>Coronavirus and kids\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC guidelines for Halloween 2020<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/daily-life-coping\/holidays.html#halloween\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) recently released guidelines, or considerations as they call it, for holiday celebrations during the pandemic. These are meant to supplement, not replace, any local health and safety laws, rules, and regulations. The CDC recommends taking factors into consideration when planning any holiday activities including community levels of COVID-19, location and duration of gatherings, as well as the size of gatherings. In general, outdoor activities pose less risk than indoor, and the more people in a gathering\u2014the greater the risk of spreading the virus. Traditional Halloween activities are given a ranking from lower, moderate, to higher risk for spreading the virus that causes COVID-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, traditional trick-or-treating (and trunk-or-treating) activities are listed as a \u201chigher risk\u201d by the CDC, along with attending crowded haunted houses or costume parties indoors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cApproaching Halloween during COVID-19 is tricky this year,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonmethodist.org\/faculty\/scott-long\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wesley Long<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Pathology and Genomic Medicine at Houston Methodist. He recommends skipping traditional trick-or-treating. \u201cConsider that you\u2019re moving from house to house in a group, typically, interacting with household members at each house and receiving items from them that you\u2019re commingling in a bag.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with trick-or-treating, it\u2019s also important to be aware of the risks of holding or attending a large Halloween party this year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.castleconnolly.com\/top-doctors\/rajeev-fernando-infectious-disease-12cc002579\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rajeev Fernando, MD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an infectious disease physician based in New York, has a recommendation: \u201cUnless it&#8217;s within a household, I would skip the indoor Halloween party,\u201d he says, adding, \u201cWe know COVID-19 can spread effectively with crowding in closed spaces. Have a virtual party instead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are some Halloween coronavirus-safe activities?<\/span><b>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lower risk activities listed by the CDC demonstrate that if you get creative, Halloween 2020 can still be a fun and memorable experience while keeping everyone safe. Some ideas include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carving and decorating jack-o-lanterns with family members, or with friends and neighbors outside and at a safe distance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having kids do a scavenger hunt to find Halloween-themed items around the neighborhood while also admiring other\u2019s Halloween decorations and\/or having a trick-or-treat style scavenger hunt at home rather than going from door to door<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a virtual Halloween costume contest over Zoom<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching a Halloween movie with those you live with<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year has demonstrated that sometimes you have to make your own fun from home. This year may be the perfect time to go all-out with the Halloween decorations, crafting, and baking as opposed to gathering in large numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Academy of Pediatrics provides some guidance for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/services.aap.org\/en\/news-room\/news-releases\/health--safety-tips\/american-academy-of-pediatrics-offers-tips-for-a-safe-halloween-during-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halloween<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and offers fun, safer alternatives. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodallergy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also has tips for a safe and healthy Halloween <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodallergy.org\/our-initiatives\/awareness-campaigns\/living-teal\/teal-pumpkin-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a way to trick-or-treat safely?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pandemic is new territory for all of us, and it is ultimately up to parents to navigate the decisions on how to celebrate Halloween (and other holidays) using their best judgement. The CDC includes some \u201cmoderate risk\u201d Halloween festivities to help families make these decisions:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a small group, outdoor, open-air costume parade where people are distanced more than 6 feet apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visiting pumpkin patches or orchards where wearing face masks is encouraged or enforced, social distancing is maintained, and where people use hand sanitizer before touching pumpkins or picking apples.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modified trick-or-treating where individually wrapped goodie bags are lined up for families to grab and go. Handwashing is important when preparing goodie bags.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor Halloween Movie Night with local family friends where social distancing is maintained.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you decide to try modified trick-or-treating, \u201cwear a protective mask over costume, social distance and hand sanitize at least every time one receives treats,\u201d Dr. Fernando says. \u201cParents can also ask the neighbors to leave candy at the doorstep thereby minimizing contact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/face-masks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pick the right mask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a costume. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional masks made of plastic that sit away from the face likely offer little protection and can sometimes cause difficulty with peripheral vision,\u201d Dr. Long says. \u201cI\u2019d recommend getting a cloth mask that matches the theme of the costume\u2014it\u2019s the perfect time of year for it,\u201d he adds.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with modified trick-or-treating it may be a good idea to stick to a few houses in your neighborhood, rather than a race to collect as many treats as possible. Be sure to avoid indoor events, including haunted houses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider high-risk groups<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When making holiday plans, it\u2019s important to keep in mind any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/coronavirus-prevention-older-adults\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher risk individuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your social circle that could be exposed. \u201cJust remember, if you have a high risk person in your household or in your \u201csocial bubble\u201d you need to be even more cautious. Focus on small, household based celebrations of the holiday, rather than trick or treating or attending parties or large gatherings,\u201d recommends Dr. Long.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Halloween 2020 may look a little different this year, but if we all do our part and make some small changes to prevent the spread of COVID-19\u2014it doesn\u2019t have to be (too) scary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: As experts learn more about the novel coronavirus, news and information changes.
