A prescription medication, Phexxi contains the active ingredients lactic acid, citric acid, and potassium bitartrate. Unlike traditional birth control, Phexxi does not contain hormones. (Birth control pills and many other forms of birth control are hormonal contraceptives.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does Phexxi work?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi works by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/phexxi.com\/how-phexxi-works\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering the vagina\u2019s pH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, making it difficult for sperm to survive and reach the egg. The normal range of the vagina\u2019s pH level is 3.5 to 4.5. Usually, when sperm enters the vagina, it raises the vagina\u2019s pH, and the sperm is able to travel to the egg. But Phexxi keeps the vaginal pH between 3.5 to 4.5, which lowers the chance of the sperm reaching the egg by decreasing sperm motility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evofem Biosciences manufactures Phexxi, and there is currently no generic available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the benefits of hormone-free birth control?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birth control containing the hormone estrogen can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/birth-control-and-high-blood-pressure-which-methods-are-safe-for-you-2020111321327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase your risk of blood clots, stroke, and high blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and has been linked to increased risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/hormones\/oral-contraceptives-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/06\/150609141603.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovarian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cancer. With hormone-free birth control, such as Phexxi, you won\u2019t experience any of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aafp.org\/pubs\/afp\/issues\/2010\/1215\/p1509.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> common with such contraceptives (nausea, headache, breast tenderness, weight gain, irregular bleeding, acne, mood changes, and decreased libido).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-hormonal birth control such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/condomeffectiveness\/brief.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> offer protection from sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhea and chlamydia that hormonal options don\u2019t protect from. Though they don\u2019t protect you from STDs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/iud\/non-hormonal-copper-iud\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-hormonal IUDs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be used long-term\u2014for 3-12 years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How do I use Phexxi?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi was designed to be placed inside the vagina right before sex (or up to one hour before) and lasts up to an hour. Each prefilled applicator contains one, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=173ff411-7227-47b0-94dc-844e1ebaf14e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5-gram dose<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you use it as prescribed\u2014inserting a second dose only if an hour has passed with no vaginal sex\u2014there is no risk of overdose.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To use Phexxi, insert the included plunger rod into the prefilled applicator, removing the cap. Next, place the applicator\u2014as far as you comfortably can\u2014into your vagina, using the plunger to release its contents. Finally, you\u2019ll remove the applicator\u2014it\u2019s okay if there\u2019s a small amount of the vaginal gel remaining inside of the device.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are considering Phexxi for the prevention of pregnancy, ask your healthcare provider for more information.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When should I use the birth control gel?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi only works when used before sexual intercourse\u2014it will not prevent pregnancy if you use it after engaging in vaginal sex. If you have sex more than once within one hour, you must use an additional dose of Phexxi. And if vaginal intercourse does not occur within one hour, apply an additional dose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi can be used with other contraception forms, including birth control pills, condoms, and diaphragms, but it cannot be used with vaginal rings, such as NuvaRing. You can use Phexxi during any part of the menstrual cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How effective is Phexxi?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailymed.nlm.nih.gov\/dailymed\/drugInfo.cfm?setid=173ff411-7227-47b0-94dc-844e1ebaf14e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In clinical trials<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Phexxi was tested for seven menstrual cycles and was about 86% effective at preventing pregnancy. Almost 14% of women got pregnant during that time. Following the instructions precisely will decrease your chances of getting pregnant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be wondering if Phexxi is more effective than condoms. The answer is, it depends. With ideal use, condoms are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK470385\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">98% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not everyone uses condoms perfectly every time. In real life, they are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/birth-control\/condom\/how-effective-are-condoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85% effective<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at preventing pregnancy, slightly less so than Phexxi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Phexxi safe?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In rare cases, Phexxi may cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2020\/208352s000lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bladder or kidney infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; in clinical trials, these conditions were reported at a rate of 0.36%. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nwhn.org\/phexxi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a history of urinary tract problems should not use Phexxi. It\u2019s also important to note that this contraceptive does not protect against STDs, and should be avoided if you or your partner is allergic to citric acid, lactic acid, or potassium bitartrate. If you develop any serious side effects or an allergic reaction, stop use of the product and get emergency medical carer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi side effects<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common side effects of Phexxi are local side effects\u2014burning and itching around the vulva and vagina.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other possible side effects include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal yeast infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/bacterial-vaginosis-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genital discomfort<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaginal discharge<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain when urinating\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The male partner may also experience local mild side effects, such as a burning or itching sensation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you experience urinary tract symptoms or you or your partner experience uncomfortable side effects, notify your healthcare provider. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/evofem.investorroom.com\/2022-05-06-Evofem-Presents-Data-Detailing-Fewer-Urinary-Tract-Infections-in-Women-Using-Phexxi-in-the-Phase-3-AMPOWER-Clinical-Trial\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent Stage 3 clinical trial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Evofem Biosciences showed that Phexxi users had fewer urinary tract infections than the general population. Further research is needed to find out if Phexxi impacts the incidence of UTIs in women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi should be avoided by those with a vaginal ring. There are no known reactions between Phexxi and alcohol, and there are no known drug interactions with Phexxi at this time. These three methods do share one similarity: They do not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs such as HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis). However, there are many ways the three differ.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi is a non-hormonal contraceptive gel that requires a prescription. It lowers the vagina\u2019s pH to a more acidic environment, making it difficult for sperm to survive and reach the egg.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prescription only\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effectiveness: It is about 86% effective with typical use.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spermicide<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwhealth.org\/health\/topic\/special\/spermicide-for-birth-control\/tw9509.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spermicide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a substance that kills sperm when sperm comes in contact with it. Traditional spermicides can be found in the forms of jelly, cream, foam, suppositories, and film. Most spermicides contain nonoxynol-9. Depending on the formulation, you will insert the spermicide with your finger or an applicator at the instructed time before intercourse.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spermicides are available over the counter (OTC).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using spermicides alone is not recommended because this method is only about 71% effective.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VCF<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vcfcontraceptive.com\/how-vcf-works.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VCF (vaginal contraceptive film)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a soft, dissolvable square of film that contains the FDA-approved spermicide nonoxynol-9. VCF is manually inserted into the vagina at least 15 minutes before sexual intercourse. Phexxi can cause cystitis (bladder infection), pyelonephritis (kidney infection), and other types of urinary tract infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phexxi should not be used for prevention of pregnancy after intercourse. It should only be used before intercourse, as instructed.
