But what you may not realize is that when these two symptoms are chronic, they can be signs of diabetes mellitus, a condition where your blood sugar is out of control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 100 million Americans are living with either diabetes or prediabetes, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/chronicdisease\/resources\/publications\/factsheets\/diabetes-prediabetes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC)\u2014and most of them don\u2019t know they have it. That\u2019s because many miss the early signs of diabetes, either because early symptoms of diabetes can be so mild they\u2019re unnoticeable or they don\u2019t know what to look for.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the different types of diabetes?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNormally, the body uses insulin to help muscle and fat cells take up glucose (a type of sugar) to use as energy,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.summitmedicalgroup.com\/doctor\/eweitzner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erica Weitzner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an endocrinologist at Summit Medical Group in New Jersey. When you develop diabetes, your body stops using insulin effectively, which allows sugar to build up in your bloodstream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/type-1-vs-type-2-diabetes\/\"><b>Type 1 diabetes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs when your pancreas fails to produce insulin\u2014the immune system destroys the cells that produce it. Previously known as juvenile diabetes, it can occur at any age.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/type-2-diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><b>Type 2 diabetes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs when your \u201ccells do not respond as well to insulin as they should, and additional insulin is required to achieve the same effect as before,\u201d Dr. Weitzner explains. It mainly affects adults.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/prediabetes-guide\/\"><b>Prediabetes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs when your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/gestational-diabetes-diet-treatments\/\"><b>Gestational diabetes<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs when a pregnant woman\u2019s hormones affect her ability to produce enough insulin for her body. That can lead to dehydration and trigger feelings of excessive thirst, which will likely lead to drinking more fluids (and going to the bathroom more).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Dry mouth or dry skin: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dehydration can make your mouth feel like a desert and make your skin feel tight or itchy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fatigue or weakness:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Extreme weakness, lethargy, or sleepiness can be signs that your blood sugar is out of whack. This can cause dizziness\u2014or even fainting\u2014if your blood sugar becomes dangerously high or low. Some people become so weak that they lose consciousness and are unable to regain consciousness again. This is sometimes referred to as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/16628-diabetic-coma\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetic coma<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it can be a life-threatening complication.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Increased appetite or unexplained weight loss:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If your body is unable to get enough energy from processing the sugar in the food that you\u2019re eating, you may notice an unusual increase in your appetite or even sudden and unexplained weight loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Slow-healing cuts:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> High blood sugar levels can stiffen your blood vessels, which makes it harder for blood to move around your body. Poor circulation means that little scratches or sores heal more slowly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Yeast infections:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Yeast feeds on sugar.
