Sometimes, though, antibiotics are necessary; if you have a bacterial infection, they may be the only way to get healthy again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you end up needing to take antibiotics during your pregnancy\u2014it can be safe to do so&#8230;but not all antibiotics are recommended while you&#8217;re expecting. Here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are antibiotics safe in pregnancy?<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It depends on the antibiotic and how it\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/chemm.nlm.nih.gov\/pregnancycategories.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">classified by the Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (FDA). Certain antibiotics, like those in the tetracycline class, should always be avoided, as should ciprofloxacin, fluoroquinolones, and streptomycin, among others. Use of these antibiotics during pregnancy has been linked to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/mothertobaby.org\/fact-sheets\/tetracycline-pregnancy\/pdf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fetal bone weakening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/accpjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/phar.1649\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developmental defects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That still leaves you with a lot of other frontline options, though, many of which are considered safe by OB-GYNs and primary care providers alike.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost antibiotics are category B drugs, meaning no long-term negative effects have ever been seen [in pregnant women] and there have been no issues in animal studies,\u201d says G. Dr. Ruiz says<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/bactrim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bactrim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shouldn\u2019t be prescribed after 32 weeks because it can affect<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/health-library\/diseases-and-conditions---pediatrics\/h\/hyperbilirubinemia-in-the-newborn.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your baby\u2019s bilirubin levels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and cause jaundice; on the other hand, the CDC recommends that nitrofurantoin not be prescribed until<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/pregnancy\/meds\/treatingfortwo\/features\/kf-uti-antibiotic-treatments-pregnant-women.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after the first trimester<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When prescribing antibiotics to a pregnant patient, most providers stick with drugs that have a long history of effectiveness and have shown themselves to be safe. Most of the drugs considered harmful to a developing fetus have perfectly safe alternatives that provide the same benefits, making them largely unnecessary for use during pregnancy. Your provider will also use discretion to prescribe the most appropriate antibiotic for your particular infection.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why you might need to take antibiotics during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019re doing everything you can to stay healthy during your pregnancy, but the reality is that pregnant women are more susceptible to both viral and bacterial infections. You may find that a run-of-the-mill cold (the third one you\u2019ve caught this winter!) turns into bronchitis or sinusitis, requiring an antibiotic to fully clear the illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even more likely is the occurrence of certain types of infections that are known to plague all women\u2026 but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnant women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/vaginal-yeast-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yeast infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/a-z-topics\/bacterial-vaginosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more common in pregnancy,\u201d says Rochelle Arbuah-Aning, MD, an OB-GYN at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore. \u201cThe hormonal changes of pregnancy can disrupt the normal pH balance of the vagina.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the likelihood of having a bladder or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/urinary-tract-infections\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">urinary tract infection (UTI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during pregnancy<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/67\/wr\/mm6701a4.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be as high as 8%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to the CDC. Some pregnant women may not even notice symptoms of a UTI, which is one of the conditions screened for during prenatal visits.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens if you don\u2019t treat bacterial infections during pregnancy?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re feeling squeamish about the idea of taking a prescribed antibiotic, know that for many conditions, the benefits of taking it are likely to far outweigh the risks. Some conditions may resolve without using oral antibiotics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPregnancy is a relatively immune-compromised state and you are more susceptible to rapid spread with bacterial infections,\u201d Dr. Ruiz says. \u201cPneumonias are worse, UTIs are worse&#8230;really [any infection during pregnancy] will be worse than when you\u2019re not pregnant.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Dr. Ruiz, what starts as a typical UTI can quickly progress to a kidney infection and, possibly,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/septicemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">septicemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if left untreated. Although taking any kind of medication during pregnancy comes with a dose of extra caution, sometimes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking a drug is more dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn general, the risk of untreated infection in pregnancy is much greater than the risks of antibiotic use, especially if the antibiotic is safe to use in pregnancy,\u201d says Dr. Arbuah-Aning, who adds that antibiotics should be taken for the shortest effective duration, and other therapies (like vaginal creams for treatment of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/yeast-infection-from-antibiotics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">antibiotic-induced yeast infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can and should be used, if necessary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You and your provider can discuss treatment options and their risks, benefits, and adverse effects for medical conditions and determine the best course of action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/home-remedies-for-uti\/\"><b>15 home remedies for UTI prevention and treatment<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things to keep in mind when taking antibiotics during pregnancy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The majority of safe antibiotics during pregnancy can be taken with food, which is good news since the most often reported side effect of antibiotics is gastrointestinal distress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA common reason why women have difficulty taking antibiotics in pregnancy is nausea and vomiting,\u201d says Dr. Arbuah-Aning, \u201cso do not take antibiotics on an empty stomach\u2014take with food or milk instead.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re really struggling, Dr. Arbuah-Aning says your provider can prescribe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/nausea-relief-medication-and-home-remedies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-nausea medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be taken 30 minutes before taking your antibiotics. In the meantime, you should continue taking your prenatal vitamins and make sure you complete the full course of antibiotics (even if you start feeling better before they\u2019re finished) to decrease your risk of prolonged infection and antibiotic resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And remember that if you have any concerns, always feel free to reach out to your prenatal provider.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you\u2019re going to an urgent care doctor or PCP and they\u2019re not sure [if what they\u2019re about to prescribe you is safe during pregnancy], check with your OB-GYN,\u201d Dr. Ruiz says. \u201cCall, send an email, leave a message with the on-call doctor\u2014do whatever you need to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No one loves taking antibiotics: Between the side effects and the concerns over antibiotic resistance, there are always risks that come with popping these bacteria-killing medications.
