Your friends and family want to celebrate with you, but they might not fully grasp how serious of a reaction you could have.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain foods can cause<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anaphylaxis<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a life-threatening allergic condition. Every year, 200,000 people require emergency care for allergic reactions to food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSome patients with a severe food allergy can experience a reaction after touching the food allergen or even inhaling small airborne particles of the food,\u201d says Sanjeev Jain, MD, allergist and immunologist at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columbia Asthma and Allergy Clinic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important for everyone to take food allergies seriously\u2014and that includes at the holidays.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-are-the-most-common-food-allergies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the most common food allergies?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing that you should do if you have a food allergy is get an accurate diagnosis of your particular allergy or sensitivity, says Stanley Fineman, MD, a spokesperson for the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGo to an allergist and find out exactly how sensitive you are,\u201d he recommends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the most common food allergens that cause dangerous allergic reactions include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peanuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tree nuts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milk<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Egg<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shellfish<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sesame seeds<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While peanuts may get a lot of attention for the dangers that they can pose to people with peanut allergies, all of these allergens should be taken seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll food allergies should be approached with an equal amount of caution,\u201d explains <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiaallergy.com\/team\/sanjeev-jain-md-phd-facaai\/\">Dr. Jain<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And these allergens can lurk in foods that you might not realize. Those fluffy mashed potatoes may contain a lot of milk, or the squash may have pecans or walnuts mixed in.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how-to-safely-navigate-a-holiday-gathering\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to safely navigate a holiday gathering<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the winter holidays near, you\u2019ll want to be proactive and not make any assumptions. Here are some holiday tips for people with food allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-notify-your-host-about-your-food-allergy-in-advance\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Notify your host about your food allergy in advance.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is always best to inform the host and guests at a communal holiday event if anyone attending has a food allergy,\u201d Dr. Jain says. That is, it\u2019s important not to assume that your host knows or remembers that you (or your spouse or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/allergy-testing-for-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">your child<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) has a food allergy. They might not think to ask you about it or to make any accommodations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-ask-questions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Ask questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re going to a restaurant, you should ask the server about the ingredients or preparation methods for certain foods before you order them and emphasize that you have an allergy or sensitivity. If you\u2019re gathering at a friend\u2019s house, you can ask the host about the food or the serving process. Bring your own food.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to avoid accidentally triggering an allergic reaction is to avoid eating the food provided at a holiday gathering. You may have to bring your own food that is safe to eat. Yes, you may have to forego your aunt\u2019s casserole or your cousin\u2019s pie if you can\u2019t verify that it\u2019s nut-free (or egg-free, or whatever your allergen happens to be).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-don-t-eat-something-if-you-re-uncertain\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Don\u2019t eat something if you\u2019re uncertain.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t know exactly what\u2019s in a dish, it\u2019s better to skip it.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s just not worth the risk to give someone else the benefit of the doubt unless you know for sure that they understand your food allergy and took steps to address it. If you receive a food gift, it might be time to re-gift it to someone without an allergy. Also, consider wearing medical alert identification, such as jewelry, with information about your allergy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-have-an-allergy-action-plan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Have an allergy action plan.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If something does happen, it\u2019s important to know what to do. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodallergy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Allergy Research Education (FARE)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a not-for-profit organization that provides education, sends alerts, and helps you develop an allergy action plan. You can download an allergy action plan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodallergy.org\/living-food-allergies\/food-allergy-essentials\/food-allergy-anaphylaxis-emergency-care-plan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You should keep a copy of the plan with you in case you are exposed and make sure your family members and close friends know of the plan as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-bring-your-medicine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Bring your medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t bring anything else with you to a festive holiday gathering, bring your epinephrine autoinjector. \u201c[People with food allergies] should have their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/epipen-2-pak\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EpiPen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with them all the time, especially when they\u2019re eating,\u201d Dr. Fineman says. \u201cThat\u2019s a given.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping an allergy medication, like antihistamines, on hand is a good idea in general to address a variety of allergy issues, suggests Dr. Fineman. Second-generation antihistamines tend to have fewer side effects than older versions. A few you could keep on hand can include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/zyrtec-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zyrtec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (cetirizine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/alavert\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alavert<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/claritin\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claritin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (loratadine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/allegra-allergy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allegra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (fexofenadine)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But these kinds of allergy meds usually aren\u2019t fast acting enough to be useful in a food allergy reaction situation. In other words, if you think you\u2019ve been exposed to your allergen, don\u2019t wait for an antihistamine to kick in\u2014use your EpiPen. Give your regrets.\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s okay to decline an invitation to a holiday dinner or party if you don\u2019t feel safe. Perhaps you can arrange to visit with your loved ones at your home or in a setting that doesn\u2019t involve food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"8-host-your-own-get-together\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Host your own get together.<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re the one in charge of the event, you can ensure that the food will be safe. Volunteer to host your own Thanksgiving dinner or New Year\u2019s Eve shindig and provide all the eats yourself.
