It can affect anyone and may involve one or both partners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthcare providers may use blood tests, imaging (like transvaginal ultrasound), or semen analysis to better <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/womens-health\/faqs\/evaluating-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">understand what causes infertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in each case.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-is-secondary-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is secondary infertility?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC11000415\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Secondary infertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when a person who has previously given birth is unable to get pregnant after trying for a year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is that infertility treatments are continually improving. (WHO, 2023)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The estimated lifetime prevalence of infertility is the lowest (10.7%) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. In the last third of infertile couples, the cause either can&#8217;t be identified or could be with both the male and female. Of the most commonly reported factors, 19% cited polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in the female as a cause of infertility, and 17% cited low sperm count in the male. Many people who want to start a family and are unable to conceive find that infertility complications impact their overall quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotional and financial stress for couples experiencing infertility peaks 4 to 6 years after the diagnosis, and after treatment failures have occurred. In some cases, the cause is unknown. Carrying excess weight often affects ovulating function,\u201d says Jessica Scotchie, OB\/GYN, the co-founder of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/trmbaby.com\/about-us\/doctors\/scotchie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee Reproductive Medicine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who\u2019s double board-certified in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s age: \u201cWomen are also starting their families at older ages on average (many are waiting until age 30, whereas prior generations generally started families between age 20-25). Starting a family at an older age can cause egg quality and ovarian dysfunction factors to play a large part in infertility,\u201d says Dr. Scotchie.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-causes-infertility-in-men\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What causes infertility in men?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/infertility\/conditioninfo\/causes\/causes-male\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male infertility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is most often caused by testicles that aren\u2019t working correctly. For instance,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK448113\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">varicoceles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are swollen testicular veins that can affect sperm count and shape.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The quality and quantity of sperm can also be affected by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and excess weight<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genetic conditions\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undescended testicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blockage of sperm from scar tissue or anatomical conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental exposure to toxic chemicals or pesticides\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancer treatments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smoking, heavy alcohol, and substance use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anabolic (body-building) steroids<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the quality and quantity of sperm are adequate for conception, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, or structural problems may impact the sperm\u2019s ability to reach an egg for fertilization.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"treating-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treating infertility<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/16083-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 90% of infertility can be treated and managed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> thanks to medical advancements in the last 30 years. IVF, intrauterine insemination (IUI), artificial insemination (AI), and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) are all assisted reproductive technology (ART) options that have been successful at helping people become pregnant. In the last few years, there have been even more options, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chapelhillobgyn.com\/blog\/infertility-treatment-innovations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pre-implantation genetic screening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to increase the effectiveness of IVF treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to ART and surgical procedures, infertility is often improved with a combination of medications aimed at treating the underlying cause.
