Hypoglycemia is defined by insufficient sugar in the blood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the symptoms of hypoglycemia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in blood sugar affect everyone differently. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/diabetes\/medication-management\/blood-glucose-testing-and-control\/hypoglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Diabetes Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ADA), some common symptoms of hypoglycemia include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shakiness or jitteriness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anxiety or nervousness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweating, chills, or clamminess\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irritability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast heartbeat<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness or lightheadedness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunger<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sudden paleness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling sleepy, weak, or lethargic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tingling in lips or cheeks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headache<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clumsiness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cases of severe hypoglycemia, these symptoms can lead to confusion, impaired vision, loss of consciousness, or seizures. If someone passes out, or has a seizure from low blood sugar, you should call 911 immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people have felt the effects of low blood sugar from time to time\u2014when you\u2019re really really hungry, or if you exercised on an empty stomach. But, \u201cif you are experiencing symptoms of hypoglycemia several times a week, this signals that you should seek medical care,\u201d explains <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/diabetes\/medication-management\/blood-glucose-testing-and-control\/hypoglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soma Mandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, MD, an internist at Summit Medical Group in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What can cause hypoglycemia in people without diabetes?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main types of non-diabetic hypoglycemia, each with different causes: reactive and nonreactive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reactive hypoglycemia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hormone.org\/diseases-and-conditions\/diabetes\/non-diabetic-hypoglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reactive hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> typically occurs when you experience low blood glucose levels a few hours after eating a meal. It\u2019s not fully understood what\u2019s behind it, but it\u2019s likely overproduction of insulin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be caused by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Prediabetes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Your body produces the incorrect amount of insulin. This can signal an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Stomach surgery: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food passes too quickly through your system<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Enzyme deficiencies:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Impair your ability to break down food<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-reactive hypoglycemia<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/diabetes\/medication-management\/blood-glucose-testing-and-control\/hypoglycemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-reactive hypoglycemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as fasting hypoglycemia, isn\u2019t directly related to food consumption. It\u2019s caused by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medications, such as quinine<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Illnesses involving the liver, kidneys, pancreas, or adrenal glands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating disorders, such as anorexia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol overconsumption<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormone dysregulation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tumors<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These can all impact your body\u2019s ability to release insulin, which can lead to low levels of blood sugar.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can hypoglycemia without diabetes be cured?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-diabetic hypoglycemia can be cured. The first step is being appropriately diagnosed. \u201cHypoglycemia in diabetics and non-diabetics can be diagnosed by checking your fasting sugar level in your blood, which can typically be done as a point of care test at any provider\u2019s office or urgent care walk-in center,\u201d Dr. Bhusri says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your healthcare provider will do a physical exam, ask you questions about your health history, and may run other blood tests or screenings. These can include asking you to record your symptoms when fasting (not eating), or eating a carbohydrate-heavy meal and watching for symptoms in a few hours. In some cases, your healthcare provider may have you complete a mixed-meal tolerance test, in which you consume a certain amount of carbohydrates (either through food or drink), then monitor your blood sugar levels. These tests, along with a visit to an endocrinology specialist can help to find\u2014and treat\u2014the underlying cause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the short term, if you are hypoglycemic you can take steps to bring your blood glucose back to normal with a small serving of a quick sugar food such as fruit juice, honey, soda, milk, or hard candy. In the long-term, you have to cure the condition causing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can hypoglycemia be prevented?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, hypoglycemia can be avoided with preventive steps\u2014whether you have diabetes or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>If you have hypoglycemia with diabetes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s all about sticking to your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/conditions\/diabetes-treatment-and-medications\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes management plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Double-check your insulin or medication dosage before taking it, and let your healthcare provider know if you change your eating or exercise habits. It might affect your glucose levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/free-diabetic-supplies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consider a continuous glucose monitor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CGM). Your healthcare provider may recommend eating frequent small meals, consuming a varied diet of fats, protein, and carbohydrates, or only exercising after eating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just remember, snacks and diet changes aren\u2019t a long-term cure if it\u2019s due to a health condition or medication.
