Meanwhile, binge drinking is highly prevalent\u2014a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.niaaa.nih.gov\/publications\/brochures-and-fact-sheets\/alcohol-facts-and-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quarter of adults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported having multiple drinks in one sitting during the past month\u2014and that has a lot of negative health consequences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019ve recently kicked a smoking habit, or are just trying to cut back on the booze to save your waistline, the pressure of social situations can make it hard to stick to your resolution to go smoke- or alcohol-free. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(If you think you\u2019re dealing with a more serious addiction, it\u2019s important to seek professional help, from your doctor or the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/find-help\/national-helpline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Helpline for SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/health-tips-christmas\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">holiday season<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fraught with uncertainty approaches, you may wonder, &#8220;Is it actually possible to tackle holiday stress management without smoking or drinking?&#8221; <\/span><b>Experts say it is.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Know the triggers for stress smoking and drinking<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a time of year when a celebratory cheers (or a shared cigarette with a friend) is commonplace, it can be tricky to be substance-free. That\u2019s even more true if you have a challenging relationship with the family you only see during this special time of year. Situational family events, financial trouble, or toxic environments commonly trigger a return to old habits, says Alexander Lightstone Borsand, MD, a physician at Scottsdale Lifestyle Medicine in Arizona.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, if Uncle Brian always tests your nerves at Christmas and stepping outside for a cigarette helped you cool off last year, it\u2019s going to be tempting to use the same coping mechanism again. Or, if a glass of wine makes it a little easier to cope with your holiday credit card bills, it\u2019s hard to resist opening a bottle before sitting down to balance your accounts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotions many of us experience are some of the biggest causes of alcohol and cigarette use, according to Mitchell S. Rosenthal, MD, president of The Rosenthal Center for Addiction Studies in New York. &#8220;The triggers are loneliness, anxiety, and depression,&#8221; he says. &#8220;People try to comfort themselves and self-medicate with alcohol or tobacco.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>RELATED: <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/news\/vaping-statistics\/\"><b>Vaping statistics<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remember, the relief is only temporary<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alcohol and tobacco can reduce stress initially when you consume them. For a short burst of time, nicotine has been said to relax muscles, improve mood, and boost concentration. Alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that temporarily makes you feel calm and sedated. &#8220;They do the job for the moment, but then people get addicted to the alcohol and readdicted to the tobacco and you have all the dangers that come with that,&#8221; Dr. Rosenthal explains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress drinking or smoking too much brings real risks\u2014to your relationships, your wallet, and even your life if you engage in risky behavior when inebriated. It can also make it a little easier to forget all of those COVID-19 precautions you\u2019ve gotten used to taking. When you\u2019re feeling blue, alcohol and tobacco can physiologically feel like adequate solutions. However, after that temporary reprieve is over, the stressful situation often remains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to deal with holiday stress without cigarettes or alcohol<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holiday <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/5-surprising-ways-stress-affects-your-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress management<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn&#8217;t have to mean smoking, drinking, or indulging in other unhealthy habits. There are many ways you can alleviate holiday stress without resorting to smoking or drinking.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Log eight hours of sleep. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting enough rest makes everything a little easier\u2014including resisting the pull of substance use. Entering a stressful situation well-rested can make the difference between managing hard feelings and spiraling out of control.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make time for physical activity. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Exercise is very good for changing brain chemistry and having the brain produce more dopamine. That&#8217;s certainly helpful,\u201d Dr. Rosenthal says. It also releases feel-good endorphins that can counteract unpleasant emotions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Count your blessings. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting on all the good things in your life\u2014especially the ones that arose after quitting or reducing usage\u2014can help pull you out of a stressful moment.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Take some deep breaths. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step into a quiet room, and take a few minutes to acknowledge your pain. Then, try a short meditation exercise. Mindful breathing can reduce stress, and reinforce your commitment to avoiding cigarettes or alcohol.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Go virtual. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was hard not being able to see loved ones in 2020 and 2021, but it made everyone realize they can connect in more ways than face-to-face. Digital platforms can offer connection without the temptation of a stocked bar (or family smoke breaks). &#8220;I&#8217;d highly recommend a long Zoom call,&#8221; Dr. Rosenthal says. &#8220;Zoom is a very useful way of connecting with people when they can&#8217;t be physically present. It&#8217;s much better than a phone call.&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Make a plan to say no.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Whether that\u2019s keeping your hands busy with a nonalcoholic mocktail, or just practicing what you\u2019ll say when someone asks you to go out for a cig, knowing how you\u2019ll cope in advance makes it more likely you\u2019ll stick to your goals.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Get support.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It&#8217;s one of the smartest decisions you can make to avoid bad habits during the holidays. &#8220;If somebody is drinking or using tobacco as a way of dealing, they&#8217;re not likely to stop without some help,&#8221; explains Dr. Rosenthal. It can be as simple as bringing a sober buddy along to boost your resolve. For more serious addictions, it may mean joining alcoholics anonymous (AA) or a smoking cessation program for assistance and finding others who can help hold you accountable.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Start a new tradition.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If your usual family gatherings lead you to old habits like smoking or drinking, consider trying something different. Make plans with friends, or take a vacation instead.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Stock up on prescriptions.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you take any <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/alcohol-and-medication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that keeps you on track (like antidepressants or anti-craving drugs), be sure to prepare before the holidays\u2014especially if you\u2019re traveling out of town.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Enlist a professional. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find your drinking or smoking habits to be problematic, make it a priority to test the waters with a new mental health professional who has addiction expertise. You may want to look for a Certified Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). Virtual appointments have made therapeutic care even more accessible since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on your situation, your physician may recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/blog\/smoking-cessation-drugs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking cessation drugs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as OTC nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicorette\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicorette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or prescription NRTs such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.singlecare.com\/prescription\/nicotrol\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicotrol<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Being open and available for others to lean on surely makes a difference in a struggling world.
